Planning Guide

Safari and Beach Vacation Guide

Dawn game drives and dust, then barefoot afternoons by turquoise water — the safari-and-beach combination is the most complete way to experience Africa. Here's how to plan it.

Designed for couples, families, honeymooners, and private travelers from around the world.

Few journeys balance as beautifully as a safari followed by a beach. The bush is intense and early-rising; the ocean is slow and restorative. Together they give a trip its arc — the thrill of wildlife, then the reward of doing nothing at all. The key is choosing combinations that pair well geographically, so you spend your time on beaches and game drives, not in transit.

Here are the classic combinations, how to plan the split, and the timing that makes both halves shine.

The combinations

The Best Safari-and-Beach Pairings

Tanzania + Zanzibar

The classic. A short flight links the Serengeti and Ngorongoro to Zanzibar's white sand, Swahili culture, and Mnemba's reefs — the most seamless bush-to-beach hop in Africa.

Kenya + the coast

Pair the Masai Mara with Diani Beach or hop to Zanzibar. Kenya's own Indian Ocean coast is beautiful, uncrowded, and an easy domestic connection after safari.

South Africa + Mozambique

Follow Kruger's Big Five with the barefoot island luxury of the Bazaruto or Quirimbas archipelagos — dhows, diving, and some of the Indian Ocean's finest reefs.

Southern Africa + Cape or islands

Combine a Botswana or South Africa safari with Cape Town's coastline and Winelands, or finish further afield in Mauritius or the Seychelles for pure indulgence.

Planning it

How to Plan the Split

  • Do safari first, beach second — arrive fresh for early drives, unwind afterward
  • Allow at least seven nights: four or five on safari, three or four on the beach
  • Choose pairings with short flight links to avoid losing days in transit
  • Match the seasons — East Africa's dry months also suit Zanzibar beautifully
  • Book beach lodges early for festive and peak-summer weeks
  • Consider a mid-trip city night if the connection needs it — Nairobi, Dar, or Cape Town

Safari and Beach Questions

What is the best safari and beach combination?

Tanzania with Zanzibar is the most seamless — a short flight from the Serengeti to white-sand beaches and coral reefs. Kenya pairs with Diani or Zanzibar, and South Africa's Kruger combines with Mozambique's islands. The best pairing depends on your safari region, since the smoothest routings keep the beach close.

Should I do safari or beach first?

Safari first, almost always. You'll want to be fresh and eager for the early game drives, and the beach is the perfect way to unwind afterward, processing everything you've seen. Finishing on the sand also gives the trip a natural, relaxing arc.

How many days for safari and beach?

Seven nights minimum: four or five on safari across two areas, then three or four on the beach. Ten to twelve nights is the sweet spot, giving each half room to feel complete without rushing the transition between them.

When is the best time for a safari and beach trip?

Conveniently, East Africa's prime safari months (June–October and December–February) also suit Zanzibar and the Indian Ocean coast, with warm, dry beach weather. We match the seasons so both halves land at their best — the timing rarely forces a compromise.

Is Zanzibar good after a safari?

Ideal. It's a short flight from Tanzanian and Kenyan safari areas, blends white-sand beaches with the history of Stone Town and superb diving and snorkeling, and offers everything from simple beach lodges to ultra-luxury resorts. It's the classic bush-to-ocean finish for good reason.
