Why Rwanda

Three Wild Worlds in One Small Country

Most travelers come to Rwanda for one hour: a morning with a mountain gorilla family on the forested slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. What surprises them is how much else fits around it. Nyungwe’s ancient rainforest in the south-west shelters chimpanzees and a canopy walkway, and in the east, Akagera has been restored into a Big Five savanna of lakes, papyrus and open plains.

It is also compact. Volcanoes and Akagera are each about two hours from Kigali by road and Nyungwe five to six, or well under an hour by helicopter, so one week can hold forest, savanna and a gorilla trek without wasted days. Rwanda keeps permits and park fees high by design, to protect the gorillas and fund the parks, which is why a good plan here starts by securing permits and builds everything else around them.

We plan with the practicalities in plain view: every official fee sourced and dated on the cost page, current travel advice explained in the safety guide, and stay styles matched to your dates instead of a hard-sell lodge list. No invented prices, and no promised sightings.

Combine Rwanda

Gorillas Plus Somewhere Completely Different

Regional flights from Kigali make Rwanda an easy first or final chapter. These are the pairings we plan most often.

  1. Rwanda + Tanzania

Gorillas in the Virungas, then the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, linked by a regional flight from Kigali to Kilimanjaro.

    Explore →
  2. Rwanda + Kenya

A Masai Mara conservancy safari with a gorilla finale, connected by frequent flights between Nairobi and Kigali.

    Explore →
  3. Rwanda + Zanzibar

Misty forest mornings, then barefoot days on the Indian Ocean, with direct flights between Kigali and Zanzibar at the time of writing.

  4. Rwanda or Uganda?

An honest side-by-side on permits, trek difficulty, access and lodges before you choose your gorilla country.

When to Go to Rwanda

The long dry season from June to mid-September and the shorter dry spell from mid-December to February bring the firmest forest trails. Gorillas are trekked every day of the year, though, and the rainy months trade mud for quieter parks and greener hills.

General guidance. Gorillas can be trekked every day of the year — ratings reflect trail comfort, not the chance of seeing them. Rainfall levels follow Kigali averages; the Virunga highlands and Nyungwe are cooler and wetter, and rain is possible in any month.

Good to know

Rwanda safari questions, answered

Is Rwanda a good choice for a first safari?

Yes, especially if gorillas are high on your list. Distances are short, roads are good, and a single week can combine a gorilla trek with Akagera’s savanna. If big herds and predators are the priority, Rwanda works best paired with Kenya or Tanzania.

How many days do I need in Rwanda?

Four days covers Kigali and one gorilla trek at a comfortable pace, with two nights near Volcanoes as the minimum. A week adds Akagera or a second trek, and ten to twelve days allows Nyungwe’s chimps and all three parks without rushing.

When is the best time for a Rwanda safari?

June to mid-September and mid-December to February are the driest months, with the firmest trails. Gorilla treks run all year, and the wetter months bring greener forest and fewer visitors at the park headquarters.

How does a private Rwanda safari work?

You travel with your own vehicle and driver-guide from the moment you land, on a route and at a pace designed around you. We plan the journey and book permits, lodges and transfers through vetted partners on the ground, and you approve every detail before anything is confirmed.

Where do I fly into for a Rwanda safari?

Kigali International Airport, usually with one connection from the US or Europe. Many flights land in the evening, so the first night is normally in Kigali, and Volcanoes, Akagera and Nyungwe are reached by road or helicopter from there.

Can I combine Rwanda with Tanzania or Kenya?

Yes, and it is one of the most rewarding pairings in Africa. Regional flights link Kigali with Kilimanjaro and Nairobi, so gorillas can open or close a Serengeti or Masai Mara safari. Many travelers finish on Zanzibar as well.

Is it safe to travel to Rwanda in 2026?

When we last checked, on 23 September 2026, the US State Department rated Rwanda as a whole at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”, a level set in May 2026 because of the regional Ebola outbreak. Only the areas within 10 km of the DRC border are at Level 4, and the advisory says that zone does not include Volcanoes National Park. We plan routes that stay out of that zone and follow the advice closely. Read our Is Rwanda Safe to Visit guide and the current advisory on travel.state.gov before you book.
