The Mount Bisoke hike is the classic volcano climb in Volcanoes National Park. At 3,711 m, Bisoke is a mid-sized Virunga, but the ascent is honest work: a steady, steep climb from farmland through bamboo and hagenia forest and, near the top, heath and giant lobelias, to the rim of a crater holding a lake. The mountain straddles the border with the DRC, with the summit on the Rwandan side.
Most hikers take around six to seven hours for the round trip, depending on fitness and the state of the trail, and the view from the rim depends entirely on the cloud. The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) permit is US$75 per person at the time of writing (September 2026), the minimum age is 15 and groups are capped at 16. Because the summit sits on an international border, confirm at booking that the hike is running on your dates. Bisoke is the right mountain for most visitors; the other Virunga climbs below suit peak-baggers and those with extra days.
Mount Bisoke Crater Lake Hike
We confirm the hike is operating and book your RDB permit, usually for a day either side of your gorilla trek.
You report to Kinigi park headquarters by 7 am, then drive with your guide to the trailhead below Bisoke, where the park’s ranger escort joins you.
From the park boundary the trail climbs steeply and steadily; the pace is slow, with frequent stops to let your body adjust to the altitude.
At the rim you look down into the crater lake if the cloud allows, rest briefly, then start the descent before the weather turns.
You are usually back at your lodge by mid-afternoon, ready for a hot shower and an early night.

Most hikers take about six to seven hours for the round trip, with the larger share spent climbing, plus the drive to the trailhead after the 7 am briefing. Slower groups and very muddy days can take longer.
It is a demanding day hike rather than a technical climb: steep, often muddy and finishing at 3,711 m. Regular hikers comfortable with long, steep ascents manage it well, especially with a porter. If you struggle on stairs or at altitude, golden monkeys or a guided nature walk may suit you better.
Considerably. Karisimbi, the highest of the Virungas at 4,507 m, is a two-day expedition with a night on the mountain, colder conditions and much longer hours on the trail. Bisoke is the right choice for most travelers; Karisimbi suits experienced hikers with two spare days.
