Seasons

Best Time to Visit South Africa

MonthNotes
May – SeptemberDry winter in the bush — thinner vegetation and wildlife gathering at waterholes make this the prime game-viewing window in the Kruger reserves.
October – FebruaryThe Cape's warm, dry summer — long sunny days for Table Mountain, the beaches, and the Winelands, while the bush turns green with newborn wildlife.
March – AprilShoulder months that balance both regions gracefully, with pleasant weather across the country and quieter lodges.
June – NovemberWhale season along the Cape coast, when southern right whales are often visible from the shore around Hermanus.

Cape Town and the Kruger reserves peak in different seasons — a contrast that becomes a planning advantage. We help match your travel dates with the regions at their best.

South Africa Safari Questions

What is the best time for a South Africa safari and Cape Town trip?

For the strongest game viewing, travel between May and September when the bush is dry and wildlife gathers at water. Cape Town is at its sunniest from November to March, so the shoulder months of April, May, September, and October are graceful compromises that serve both regions well.

Why choose a private reserve over Kruger National Park itself?

Private reserves such as the Sabi Sand share unfenced wildlife with the Kruger but limit vehicle numbers, allow off-road tracking and night drives, and pair each vehicle with a dedicated guide-and-tracker team. The result is closer, calmer, more personal sightings.

Are there malaria-free safari options in South Africa?

Yes. Madikwe and several Eastern Cape reserves are malaria-free, which makes them popular with families traveling with young children and anyone who prefers to avoid antimalarial medication. Wildlife viewing in these reserves is excellent, particularly for elephant and wild dog.

How many days do I need for South Africa?

Nine to ten nights is the sweet spot: three to four nights on safari, three to four in Cape Town, and two in the Winelands. With twelve or more nights you can add the Whale Coast, the Garden Route, or a second safari region.

Is South Africa good for a honeymoon?

Wonderfully so. Few destinations offer this much variety in one journey — romantic safari lodges, Cape Town's coastal glamour, candlelit Winelands dinners, and dramatic scenery throughout. It suits couples who want romance with texture, not just a beach.

Can South Africa be combined with Victoria Falls or Botswana?

Easily. Short flights from Johannesburg connect the Kruger reserves with Victoria Falls or the Okavango Delta, making two- and three-country southern Africa journeys some of the most rewarding routings we plan.

When can I see whales on the Cape coast?

Southern right whales typically appear along the Whale Coast from about June to November, with Hermanus offering superb land-based viewing. The season overlaps beautifully with prime Kruger game viewing, so many winter journeys include both.
