Trip typePrivate safari

If you are planning a Rwanda safari of 7 days, this is the route we would suggest for most first visits, because it pairs the mountain gorillas of the north-west with the country’s only savanna park. Akagera National Park comes first, with two nights on its lakes and a full day on its northern grasslands, before you cross Rwanda to Volcanoes National Park for three nights.

Akagera is one of Africa’s most encouraging restoration stories. Managed by African Parks with the Rwanda Development Board since 2010, it saw lions return in 2015 and rhinos from 2017, and its wildlife has grown from fewer than 5,000 animals to almost 12,000. It is not the Serengeti: predators are thinner on the ground and you rarely share a sighting. That quiet is exactly its appeal, and it gives the week a second, very different chapter to set against the forest.

Why this route works

Akagera goes first because it is the easy leg: about 2 hours from Kigali to the southern gate, so you can spend the morning at the memorial and still make the 16:30 sunset boat. Ending in the volcanoes places the gorilla trek mid-journey, with a spare day behind it, instead of on a final morning when a missed connection could cost you the permit. The price of this order is day 4, the week’s longest drive at about 4.5–5 hours back through Kigali and north to Musanze; a charter helicopter turns it into a short flight, and it is the first upgrade we suggest on this trip. Three nights in the park cover the gorilla day, the golden monkeys and one open slot.

    Day 1 · Kigali

    Arrival in Rwanda’s Capital

Drive · Kigali International AirportKigali · about 20–30 minutes

Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Kigali International Airport, a few kilometres east of the centre, and takes you straight to your hotel. If you land in daylight, you may notice how clean and unhurried the streets are; Rwanda banned plastic bags long ago and keeps a monthly morning of community work. Otherwise tonight is dinner, a short briefing on the week from your guide and an early bed. Keep binoculars somewhere handy in your bag, because tomorrow ends on a lake.

Day 2 · Akagera National Park

The Memorial, Then East to Lake Ihema

Drive · KigaliAkagera National Park (Mutumba gate) · about 2 hours

The day starts at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, open from 09:00. Its exhibitions tell the story of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and its gardens hold the graves of more than 250,000 people; most visitors want a little silence afterwards, and the café on site allows for it. By late morning you are driving east as the hills soften into papyrus valleys, entering Akagera through the southern Mutumba gate after about 2 hours. After a late lunch, you board the 16:30 boat trip on Lake Ihema, where hippos are often close by and large crocodiles bask on the banks.

  3. Day 3 · Akagera National Park

    Rhino Country in the North

Today is a full day out, and it needs to be: the open grasslands where rhino, giraffe and lion are most often found lie a long way north of the southern lakes. Your guide sets off at first light with a picnic, working past acacia woodland and swamp edges where elephants move between water and cover, and out onto plains grazed by zebra and buffalo. Nothing here is staged or crowded, so a sighting can be yours alone for as long as you like. Back by late afternoon, you can add a night drive from 17:30, looking for the park’s nocturnal life and, with luck, a leopard.

  4. Day 4 · Musanze

    Across Rwanda to the Virungas

Drive · Akagera National ParkVolcanoes National Park · about 4.5–5 hoursA charter helicopter can replace the drive; ask when you book.

Take an early drive or the 07:30 boat, then set off west. The road returns through Kigali, a natural lunch stop, and then climbs north through terraced farmland to Musanze, with the volcano chain rising ahead of you on a clear afternoon. It is a long day, about 4.5–5 hours of driving in all, but a scenic one, and your guide stops wherever you like. The alternative is a charter helicopter from the park, which turns the transfer into a short flight over the country’s hills and lakes. Either way, you arrive in time for a fireside dinner at altitude.

Day 5 · Volcanoes National Park

    Gorilla Day

The lodge wakes you before six with coffee, and your guide drives you to the Kinigi headquarters for the 07:00 briefing. Rangers explain the etiquette (about 7 m back, no flash, voices low) and assign your group of up to eight to one of the habituated families, weighing how much walking each group wants. The trek might be a stroll across potato fields to the forest edge or a steep climb into bamboo and hagenia woodland; nobody can tell you in advance. When the trackers signal, you leave bags and sticks with the porters and spend a single hour with the family.

  6. Day 6 · Volcanoes National Park

Golden Monkeys and the Fossey Legacy

A second early start, this time for the golden monkeys. Their troops live in the bamboo on the lower slopes, and they are small, quick and often noisy, dropping from stem to stem in flashes of orange; photographers should raise the ISO and expect plenty of blurred frames. The afternoon belongs to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund near the park, where exhibits on gorilla research put yesterday’s hour in context. If you would rather use the morning differently, a second gorilla trek or the Dian Fossey tomb hike can replace the monkeys.

  7. Day 7 · Kigali International Airport

    Down from the Mountains

Drive · Volcanoes National ParkKigali International Airport · about 2.5 hours

A slow breakfast with the volcanoes, clouds permitting, then the drive south to Kigali, about 2.5 hours to the airport. With time before an evening flight, your guide can stop at a craft cooperative or a coffee roastery in the city, or arrange a day room so you can shower and repack for the long flight home. If you are continuing to the Serengeti, Zanzibar or Kenya, this is where the regional connection happens, and your guide stays with you until check-in.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

June–September
Dry in both parks. In Akagera, water shrinks back to the lakes and animals gather near it; in the volcanoes, trails are at their firmest. Permits and lodges are in highest demand, so plan well ahead.
December–February
The short dry season is a strong alternative for the gorillas, with fewer visitors than mid-year, and Akagera is green and fresh after the short rains.
November–April
Akagera’s managers name this period as the park’s best time, when it is lush and green; dry months make animals easier to find near water. Kwibuka, from 7 April, is a solemn national period that calls for a quiet, respectful manner.
Last Saturday of the month
Umuganda restricts traffic from 07:00 to 11:00 and the memorial opens at 13:00 that day; if it falls on day 2, we move your memorial visit to the afternoon of day 7 before your flight.

Make It Yours

  • Fly by charter helicopter from Akagera to the volcanoes
  • Swap the golden monkeys for a second gorilla trek
  • Add a fourth Volcanoes night for the Mount Bisoke climb
  • Book a private boat on Lake Ihema for photography
  • Add three nights in Nyungwe for chimpanzees and the canopy walkway
  • Finish with a few nights on Zanzibar via a regional flight

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is Akagera worth adding to a gorilla trip?

If you want classic game drives as well as the gorillas, yes. Akagera has the Big Five, a lake boat trip and very few vehicles, and it is only about 2 hours from Kigali. Wildlife density is lower than in Kenya or Tanzania, so think of it as a quiet, restored wilderness rather than a Serengeti.

Can children join this Rwanda safari?

Teenagers aged 15 and over can do everything, including the gorilla trek. Younger children are welcome in Akagera, where reduced rates apply from 6 to 12, and those aged 12–14 can join the golden monkeys but not the gorillas. On gorilla morning we can arrange a guided nature walk or a visit to the Musanze caves for anyone too young to trek.

How long is the drive from Akagera to Volcanoes National Park?

Allow about 4.5–5 hours, returning through Kigali and heading north via Musanze. The roads are paved, lunch in Kigali breaks the day in two and your guide stops whenever you like. A charter helicopter shortens the transfer to well under an hour if you would rather not spend the time on the road.

Which comfort level should I choose for this trip?

Comfort uses a central city hotel, a hillside lodge above Akagera’s southern lakes and a garden lodge in Musanze, about half an hour from the park headquarters. Premium moves you onto the shore of Lake Ihema and into a cottage lodge near Kinigi. Luxury adds a private camp in Akagera’s remote north and a park-edge lodge with suites and fireplaces.
