Trip typePrivate safari

A Rwanda and Tanzania safari joins the two experiences that top most East Africa wish lists: an hour with mountain gorillas and the big-sky game viewing of the Serengeti. The journey starts in Rwanda, with a night in Kigali and three in Volcanoes National Park, time enough for a gorilla trek and a second primate morning.

A regional flight then takes you from Kigali to Kilimanjaro, where a night on a coffee estate near Arusha breaks the journey before a light-aircraft hop into the Serengeti. Three nights there are followed by two on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, with a full morning on its floor. Putting the gorillas first means the most rule-bound, date-fixed part of the trip is done early, and the open-ended game drives follow.

Why this route works

Gorillas come first for two reasons. Your permit is fixed to a date and forfeited if you arrive late, so it belongs early, where a delayed long-haul flight can be absorbed; and after the intensity of the trek, the Serengeti’s long, open days feel like a reward. The flight from Kigali to Kilimanjaro is a regional service with a limited timetable, so we set your Rwanda dates around it and add a night on an Arusha coffee estate rather than connecting straight onto a light aircraft. The Serengeti comes before the crater so that you finish in the highlands, within a morning’s reach of Kilimanjaro Airport for the flight home.

Itinerary

Day by Day

A suggested flow — every day can be reshaped around you.

  1. Kigali skyline rising over green hills

    Day 1 · Kigali

    Kigali, Evening Arrival

Drive · Kigali International AirportKigali · about 20–30 minutes

Your first stop is Kigali, a hillside capital that feels calmer than most in the region. A driver meets you at the airport for the short transfer to a hilltop retreat set in landscaped gardens, where dinner and a quiet room are the only agenda. Your guide calls in to walk you through the week, including the paperwork that matters on a two-country route: a Rwanda visa, issued on arrival or online for most nationalities, and your Tanzania visa, which you apply for online before you travel.

  2. Day 2 · Kinigi (park HQ)

    Memorial Morning, Mountain Evening

Drive · KigaliVolcanoes National Park · about 2–2.5 hoursA charter helicopter is available on request.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial opens at 09:00, and a morning there is the right place to begin understanding the country you are about to travel through. Its gardens hold the graves of more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi; take the time you need, and consider a guided visit, as some of the guides are survivors. Afterwards you drive north for about 2–2.5 hours toward the Virungas, reaching your lodge, on the ridge above the twin lakes or on a reforestation reserve at the park edge, in time to watch the light fade over the volcanoes.

Day 3 · Volcanoes National Park

    The Gorilla Trek

You report to the Kinigi park headquarters at 07:00, where the day’s trekkers are divided among the habituated families in groups of up to eight. Tell your guide beforehand whether you want a shorter walk or are happy with a long one, as allocation partly reflects fitness, though no particular family is ever promised. The approach crosses farmland to the forest edge, then follows the trackers through bamboo and nettles to wherever the family has settled. The hour that follows, about seven metres from a silverback and his group, tends to stay with people for years.

  4. Day 4 · Volcanoes National Park

Golden Monkeys, or a Second Family

The included option this morning is the golden monkeys: a gentler trek into the bamboo on the lower slopes to spend an hour with a troop of these quick, gold-backed monkeys. The alternative is a second gorilla trek, to meet a different family on different terrain; it needs a second permit, which we secure at booking if you want it. In the afternoon, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s Ellen DeGeneres Campus explains the research behind the gorillas’ recovery, or you can simply rest before tomorrow’s change of country.

  5. Day 5 · Kilimanjaro Airport

    Kigali to Kilimanjaro

Flight · Kigali International AirportKilimanjaro International Airport · about 1.5–2 hours, depending on the scheduleFollowed by a road transfer of about 1 hour to Arusha.

After breakfast you drive back to Kigali for the regional flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport in northern Tanzania; flight times depend on the day’s routing. Well before you travel, check the Tanzania visa guide and the yellow fever rules, since both are checked on arrival. After immigration you meet your Tanzanian guide for the hour’s drive to a coffee estate on the edge of Arusha, where dinner is served with Mount Meru somewhere in the darkness beyond the plantation.

  6. Day 6 · Serengeti

    Into the Serengeti

Flight · Arusha airportSerengeti airstrip · about 1–2 hours

A short drive to Arusha’s airport and a scheduled light-aircraft flight carry you over the Rift Valley and the crater highlands to a Serengeti airstrip, roughly 1–2 hours depending on where your camp is and how many stops the plane makes. Soft-sided bags are required on these small aircraft, typically with a limit of around 15 kg each, so repack before you leave Rwanda and leave the rest in Arusha. Your guide meets you at the strip, the drive to camp becomes your first game drive, and the afternoon is for getting your bearings on the plains.

  7. Day 7–8 · Serengeti

Following the Season on the Serengeti

Two full days, shaped by the time of year. In January and February the wildebeest herds are usually on the short-grass plains of the south, where calving draws lions, cheetahs and hyenas; from July to September they are generally in the north near the Mara River, where crossings follow no timetable. At the ultra level your camp can be placed to follow them, while the luxury camp around Seronera puts you among resident prides and leopards in any month. The great migration guide explains the cycle, and your guide plans each day around what is moving.

    • Full-day game drives with picnic lunches
    • Migration herds, where the season allows
    • Optional sunrise balloon flight

  8. Day 9 · Ngorongoro Crater

    Up to the Crater Highlands

Drive · SerengetiNgorongoro Crater rim · about 3–4 hours from the central SerengetiFrom the far north, a light-aircraft flight to the Lake Manyara airstrip is quicker.

After a final morning drive, you head south-east across the plains, leave the park at Naabi Hill and climb into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where Maasai herders graze cattle alongside the wildlife. From the central Serengeti the drive takes about 3–4 hours with game viewing on the way; from the far north or south, a short flight to the Lake Manyara airstrip and the climb up to the rim is quicker. Your lodge stands on the crater rim, some 600 m above the caldera floor, and the evenings are cold enough for a fire.

    • Evening on the crater rim
    Overnight

  9. Day 10 · Ngorongoro Crater

A Morning on the Crater Floor

Descend into the crater as early as the gate allows, with breakfast packed for a picnic on the floor. The caldera, roughly 260 km², works like a natural amphitheatre: buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hyenas and lions live here all year, and it is one of Tanzania’s better places to look for black rhino, though a sighting is never assured. Hippos wallow in the pools, and flamingos sometimes gather on the soda lake. Time on the floor is limited by park rules, so you climb back out for a slow afternoon and a last evening on the rim.

    • Early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater
    • Picnic breakfast on the crater floor
    • Game drive in search of black rhino

  10. Day 11 · Kilimanjaro Airport

    Homeward from the Highlands

Drive · Ngorongoro Crater rimKilimanjaro International Airport · about 4–5 hoursOr fly from the Lake Manyara airstrip to Kilimanjaro or Arusha.

After breakfast on the rim, your guide drives you down through Karatu and the Rift Valley escarpment toward Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport, about 4–5 hours with a lunch stop. You can shorten the day with a flight from the Lake Manyara airstrip instead. A day room near Arusha can be arranged if your international departure is late, and if you would like more time before going home, Zanzibar’s beaches are a short flight from either airport.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

January–February
Dry weather in both countries and, in most years, the calving season on the southern Serengeti plains, which an ultra-level camp can be placed near. Gorilla trails are firmer between the rains.
June–September
The long dry season in Rwanda coincides with the herds moving from the western Serengeti to the north, with river crossings most likely from July. Both halves of the trip are at their busiest, so permits and camps should be held early.
March–May & October–December
Rain in both countries: muddier trails in the Virungas and, in April and May, some Serengeti camps close for the long rains. Kwibuka, Rwanda’s commemoration period, begins on 7 April. We usually suggest other months for this combination.
Last Saturday of the month
Rwanda’s Umuganda morning restricts traffic from 07:00 to 11:00 and delays the memorial’s opening to 13:00; if day 2 falls on it, you drive north after an afternoon visit instead.

Make It Yours

  • Add a second gorilla trek on day 4
  • Take a charter helicopter from Kigali to the volcanoes
  • Add a fourth Serengeti night in river-crossing season
  • Add a sunrise balloon flight over the Serengeti
  • Spend two nights in Akagera before flying to Tanzania
  • Extend with three or four nights on Zanzibar

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct flight from Kigali to the Serengeti?

No. You fly from Kigali to Kilimanjaro International Airport on a regional scheduled service, then continue to the Serengeti by light aircraft from Arusha. Because the regional flight has a limited timetable, we fix your Rwanda dates around it and add a night near Arusha so the connection is never tight.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate to enter Tanzania from Rwanda?

Tanzania can ask for proof of yellow fever vaccination from travelers arriving from, or transiting through, countries on its risk list. We check the current rule against your exact routing when you book. A travel-health clinic can advise whether the vaccine is right for you, well before departure.

Should I visit Rwanda or Tanzania first?

We put Rwanda first. The gorilla permit is fixed to a date and lost if you miss the briefing, so it is safer early in the trip, before any knock-on delays, and open-country game drives are a relaxing way to finish. Reversing the order also works if flight schedules suit it better.

How many visas do I need for this trip?

Two: one for Rwanda and one for Tanzania. Rwanda issues visas on arrival or online, and some nationalities travel visa-free; Tanzania’s visa is usually applied for online before you fly. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya but not Tanzania, so it does not help on this route.
