What US, UK and European travelers need at Kigali’s border in 2026: the visa, the passport, the yellow card and the new rule on recent travel in the DRC.
At the time of writing (September 2026), US citizens need a visa for Rwanda, and getting one is simple. Rwanda has offered visas on arrival to every nationality since 1 January 2018, so you can apply online before you fly through Irembo, the government’s services portal, or obtain the visa at Kigali International Airport. For a US passport, the single-entry tourist visa costs US$50 and is valid for 30 days.
Many visitors pay nothing at all. Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and La Francophonie member states receive a free 30-day visa on arrival, which covers passports from the UK, Canada, Australia, France and Belgium, among others. Germany and most other EU countries pay the same fee as the United States.
Entry rules tightened in 2026 because of the Ebola outbreak in neighbouring countries, so read the section on recent travel below. This guide reflects the position at the time of writing and isn’t legal advice; always confirm with Rwanda’s Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration before you travel.

Applying
There are two routes, and both lead to the same visa at the same fee.
Applying through Irembo before you fly leaves less to do at the airport after a long journey. The visa on arrival works just as well, and many travelers use it without trouble.
Rwanda’s immigration service warns against unofficial agents. If a website adds an “express” or “processing” charge on top of the government fee, it isn’t the official portal; the genuine links are listed under Sources below.
It should be valid for at least six months from the day you arrive, with at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Renew it before you book gorilla permits, which are issued against your passport number.
A single-entry visa suits a Rwanda-only trip or a route that leaves Rwanda and doesn’t return. If you’ll exit and come back through Kigali, for example after a few nights in Kenya, the 90-day multiple-entry visa is usually the right choice.
If you applied online, carry a printed copy and one saved offline on your phone, with your return flight details and the address of your first night’s hotel.
2026 Health Rules
Since 22 May 2026, Rwanda’s Ministry of Health has refused entry to foreign nationals who were in, or transited through, the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the previous 30 days, and arriving passengers are screened at Kigali International Airport. The rule responds to the Ebola outbreak in the DRC, which was still continuing at the time of writing, and it could be changed or lifted at short notice.
In practice, it affects travelers who have recently visited the DRC for work or travel, or whose connection routes through the country. Flying in from the US or Europe through hubs outside the DRC, you won’t be affected by it.
The return journey has its own rule. Since May 2026, US-bound travelers who were in the DRC, Uganda or South Sudan in the previous 21 days have been required to enter the United States through Washington Dulles, Atlanta or Houston for enhanced screening. Health Documents
According to the CDC, travelers flying directly from the United States don’t need a yellow fever certificate for Rwanda. If you arrive from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, however, a certificate is required for everyone aged one and over. Kenya and Uganda are on that list, which matters if Rwanda follows a Kenya safari.
The CDC generally doesn’t recommend the vaccine for a Rwanda-only trip, so the question is about your route rather than risk in Rwanda itself. If you’re combining countries, discuss the order of travel with a travel-health clinic and carry the yellow card in your hand luggage. Regional Visa
Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda share the East Africa Tourist Visa, a multiple-entry visa valid for 90 days across the three countries. It can simplify a trip that visits more than one of them, but it doesn’t cover Tanzania, and its fee and conditions should be confirmed on the official portal before you rely on it.
