Extensions
An early flight across the channel, an afternoon on the river among hippos and elephants, and back on the beach two or three days later.
A safari from Zanzibar suits travelers whose trip is built around the beach but who want a taste of the African bush. Same-day safaris do exist, but they mean a pre-dawn start, a few hours of game viewing in the heat of the day and a long return, and most people come back tired rather than inspired. We recommend two or three nights, which gives you dawn and dusk — the hours when animals are most active — and a night or two listening to the bush.
The closest and most rewarding option is Nyerere National Park, about an hour by light aircraft to airstrips such as Mtemere and Siwandu. Its lakes and river channels make a Rufiji boat safari the highlight, alongside game drives and, at some camps, guided walks. If you have five or more days for the bush, a safari-first trip to the north usually works better; our Tanzania safari and Zanzibar guide explains how to flip the order.
Safari from Zanzibar: Short Fly-In Safaris
We fit two or three safari nights into your island stay, usually in the middle, so you finish on the beach rather than flying home tired.
Your driver takes you to Zanzibar Airport for a morning light-aircraft flight of about an hour to your camp’s airstrip.
Your guide meets the plane, and the first game drive or boat trip often begins on the way to camp.
Days follow the bush rhythm: an early drive or boat safari, a siesta through the heat and a late-afternoon outing that ends with sundowners.
A midday flight returns you to Zanzibar, where your beach hotel has kept the luggage you did not need in the bush.

Good to know
Yes, but we rarely recommend it. A day trip means an early flight, a few hours of game viewing in the hottest part of the day and a late return, and it misses the dawn and dusk hours when wildlife is most active. Even one night makes a big difference, and two or three make the effort worthwhile.
Nyerere National Park, about an hour by light aircraft, is the most practical choice, with daily scheduled flights to its airstrips. Mikumi looks closer on a map but is slower to reach, because the journey means getting to Dar es Salaam and then a long drive.
Two or three. Two nights give you three game drives or boat trips and a real feel for the bush; three add a full day and more chances of predator sightings. With five or more days to spare, a longer safari with Zanzibar at the end usually delivers more.
Technically yes, but it is rarely worth it. Flights take roughly 2.5–3.5 hours each way with stops, so one night leaves little time for game viewing and a lot of time in small aircraft. If the Serengeti is the goal, plan it as a proper safari before the beach.
