Rwanda Travel Guide
How long it really takes to get from your home airport to a lodge near Kinigi, and from one Rwandan park to the next.
Rwanda is small, and that shapes every itinerary. The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes about two to two and a half hours to the park headquarters at Kinigi, Akagera’s southern gate is about two hours east of the capital, and only Nyungwe, in the far south-west, is a genuinely long day on the road. Every trip starts at Kigali International Airport.
This guide covers flying in from North America and Europe, what to expect on arrival, realistic road and helicopter times between the parks, and the regional flights that link Rwanda with Tanzania, Kenya and Zanzibar.
International Flights
At the time of writing there are no nonstop flights from the United States to Rwanda, so you’ll connect once. The usual connections run through Doha, Amsterdam, Brussels, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Dubai, and Rwanda’s national carrier flies to Kigali from London, Brussels, Paris, Dubai and Doha. Schedules and carriers change, so we look at the best connection from your home airport when we plan.
Many long-haul connections land in Kigali in the evening, which is why most itineraries begin with a night in the city. It also protects your permit: a gorilla trek is forfeited without refund if a delayed flight makes you miss the 7 am briefing, so we never plan a trek for the morning after an international arrival.
Arriving
Kigali International Airport sits at Kanombe, about 5 km east of the city centre, and is compact and orderly. After health screening and immigration, where you obtain or show your visa, your driver-guide meets you in the arrivals hall. Most Kigali hotels are 10–25 minutes away, depending on traffic.
Arrive with no plastic bags in your luggage, since they are confiscated, and with your visa approval to hand if you applied online through Irembo; the Rwanda visa guide covers fees and documents. A new international airport is under construction at Bugesera, south of the capital, and its opening date hasn’t been confirmed.
Drive & Fly Times
Approximate times in a private vehicle, before stops, with the helicopter alternative where it makes sense. The roads are good but winding, and your driver keeps to Rwanda’s speed limits.

Times are typical and run longer in heavy rain or on Umuganda mornings. Helicopter transfers are private charters priced per aircraft and depend on the weather; we confirm every time when we plan your route.
Choosing How to Travel
Most Rwanda trips drive every leg, and the drives are part of the experience: terraced hills, tea estates, roadside markets and glimpses of the volcanoes. A helicopter earns its place on a few kinds of day.
Volcanoes to Akagera, or Kigali to Nyungwe, fills most of a day by road. By helicopter either becomes a short flight over the hills and lakes, and you gain an afternoon in the park.
On a four-day trip, flying between Kigali and Volcanoes can free up time for a golden monkey trek or a slow afternoon at the lodge without adding a night.
Kigali to Musanze or to Akagera is short enough by road that a helicopter saves only an hour or so, and cloud over the Virungas can delay flights. We always keep a road plan as a backup.
Helicopters carry limited soft luggage, and pilots need visibility, so low cloud in the rainy months can mean waiting or switching to the road. Your driver-guide can follow by road with the heavier bags.
Routing & Advisories
Scheduled flights between Kigali and Kamembe, near Nyungwe’s western edge, resumed on 23 March 2026. The flight takes about 40–45 minutes, followed by a drive of 1–1.5 hours to the park, so on paper it is the fastest way to Nyungwe. At the time of writing, though, Kamembe Airport lies inside areas singled out in current government travel advice, so we reach Nyungwe by road through Huye or by helicopter instead.
For the same reason, we don’t route drives through Rubavu on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, which borders the DRC city of Goma. The Rwanda safety guide sets out the current advice and where it applies. If the advice changes, these routes may come back into use.
Onward Flights
Kigali works well as a regional hub. At the time of writing, direct flights connect it with Nairobi for Kenya, Kilimanjaro for northern Tanzania and the Serengeti, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar for the beach. The 11-day gorillas and Serengeti journey uses the Kilimanjaro link, with a night near Arusha before the light-aircraft flight into the park.

Not directly. Travelers usually fly from Kigali to Kilimanjaro, spend a night near Arusha, then take a light-aircraft flight into the Serengeti the next morning.
On the longest legs, often yes, because Volcanoes to Akagera and Kigali to Nyungwe take most of a day by road. For the shorter drives to Volcanoes or Akagera, the road is usually the better value and isn’t affected by cloud.
By road it takes about five to six hours, often broken with a stop at Nyanza or Huye. The alternative is a chartered helicopter. We don’t currently use the scheduled flights to Kamembe because of the travel advice covering that area.
