Panorama Route & Blyde River Canyon

   We schedule the route as part of a road day from Johannesburg or as an excursion from a lodge near Hoedspruit, fitting it around your flights and drive times.

   Your private driver-guide sets off early, since the viewpoints are usually sharpest in the morning, before cloud builds over the escarpment.

   Rather than stopping at every sign, you choose three or four highlights, typically God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels, adding the Lisbon or Berlin falls or Pilgrim’s Rest if time allows.

   Lunch is in Graskop or Pilgrim’s Rest, and the road then winds down off the escarpment into the Lowveld toward your Kruger gate or lodge.

   Your guide checks the weather and roads on the day and reorders the stops accordingly, always arriving before dark.

Blyde River Canyon & the Three Rondavels

The big canyon viewpoint at the northern end of the route, looking across the gorge and the dam to the three rock ‘huts’. Morning light is usually clearest.

God’s Window & the Pinnacle

Cliff-edge viewpoints near Graskop over the Lowveld, and a freestanding rock column rising from a forested gorge. Both can vanish completely in mist.

Bourke’s Luck Potholes

Deep cylindrical potholes scoured into the riverbed by swirling water and pebbles, seen from footbridges above the confluence.

Pilgrim’s Rest

A restored gold-rush village that grew after alluvial gold was found in 1873; the whole town is a national monument, with Victorian shopfronts and panning demonstrations.

Good to know

• Mist is the main variable. On summer afternoons and cloudy days God’s Window can disappear, so we plan the viewpoints for the morning.
• Walks at the viewpoints are short and mostly on paths, with some steps at Bourke’s Luck. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a warm layer, since the escarpment is noticeably cooler than the Lowveld.
• Entrance fees are charged at several viewpoints and reserves along the route and are paid on the day.
• Road surfaces vary and some stretches are potholed, so we plan this route with a private driver-guide in daylight rather than as a self-drive.
• The area has a rich gold-rush past, and Percy FitzPatrick, once a storekeeper in Pilgrim’s Rest, drew on the old wagon roads here for his classic Jock of the Bushveld.
