The Cape Winelands

Why Visit

The Cape Winelands are the mountain-ringed valleys east of Cape Town that most travelers picture when they think of South African wine. Stellenbosch lies about 45–60 minutes from the city, Paarl about 45 minutes and Franschhoek about 1–1.25 hours, each surrounded by estates where the vines climb toward granite peaks. The Western Cape was designated a Wine of Origin geographical unit in 1993, and cooler wards such as Elgin and the Hemel-en-Aarde valley near Hermanus extend the wine country further east.

History runs deep here. About 300 French Huguenot refugees arrived in 1688 and were granted land in the valley that became Franschhoek, “French corner”, and their family names still mark farms and streets. Stellenbosch, a university town of oaks and whitewashed gables, opened South Africa’s first official wine route in 1971. Cape Dutch architecture and dramatic mountain passes give the region a look quite unlike the rest of the country.

Many safari travelers treat the Winelands as a day out from Cape Town. November–March	Summer: warm to hot in the inland valleys, ideal for long lunches outdoors and evenings on a terrace. Harvest usually runs from about February into March, when cellars are at their busiest, and mid-December to mid-January is the peak holiday period.
April–May	Autumn: the vines turn gold and red, the heat eases and the valleys grow quieter. Many regular visitors consider this the finest time to tour.
June–August	Winter: cool, often wet days and cold nights. Fireside tastings, red wine and slow-cooked menus take over, and the estates are at their quietest.
September–October	Spring: bud-break in the vineyards, blossom in the orchards and mild, changeable weather, with the first outdoor lunches of the season.

Stellenbosch

A university town of oak-lined streets and whitewashed Cape Dutch buildings, Stellenbosch has the widest choice of estates in the Winelands and opened South Africa’s first official wine route in 1971. It is lively, with students, galleries and cafés, and about 45–60 minutes from Cape Town, so it works as an easy base or a first stop from the airport.

Franschhoek

Franschhoek is a single, walkable village street at the head of a valley ringed by mountains, settled by French Huguenots from 1688 and now best known for its restaurants. Its wine tram has run since 2012 on a 28 km branch line built in 1904 between Paarl and Franschhoek, with double-decker trams modeled on a 1923 Blackpool design, and it links estates along the valley. The village is about 1–1.25 hours from Cape Town.

Best for: Food lovers, couples and a village base

Paarl

About 45 minutes from Cape Town, Paarl is a larger working town beneath a distinctive granite dome, with estates on the surrounding slopes. It sees fewer visitors than its two famous neighbors and makes a practical stop on the way to or from Franschhoek.

Best for: Quieter tastings close to Cape Town

Constantia, Elgin and the Hemel-en-Aarde

Not every wine area is inland. Constantia lies inside Cape Town itself, home to a famous historic sweet wine, and is easy to add to a city stay. To the east, the cool Elgin valley and the Hemel-en-Aarde valley behind Hermanus make a natural pairing with the Whale Coast for couples.

Getting There

The Winelands are a short road trip from Cape Town International, so there is no need to go back into the city after a flight: Stellenbosch is about 45–60 minutes away, Paarl about 45 minutes and Franschhoek about 1–1.25 hours. Many travelers arrive straight from a safari flight, spend two nights and then continue east to Hermanus and the Whale Coast, or return to Cape Town for the flight home.

Drive or fly?

Nobody flies to the Winelands; the real question is who drives. Never combine tastings with driving: book a private driver-guide for estate days, or leave the car behind and use the wine tram in the Franschhoek valley, which runs set routes linking a handful of estates by tram and open-air bus. A driver-guide also knows which estates need reservations for tastings or lunch and can shape a day around your tastes.

Choose Stellenbosch for variety and energy: it has the most estates within easy reach and a lively university-town feel. Choose Franschhoek for food and romance: a compact village of restaurants with the wine tram on the doorstep. With two nights you can base yourself in one and spend a day in the other.

Is a day trip to the Winelands enough?

A day trip shows you two or three estates and a long lunch, which suits travelers short on time. It also means an hour or more on the road each way and a firm eye on the clock. Two nights let you taste at a relaxed pace, eat dinner in the valley and see the vineyards in morning light.

How does the Franschhoek wine tram work?

You buy a day ticket for one of several set routes, then hop on and off at the estates along it, traveling between stops by vintage-style tram and open-air bus. Tastings are paid for at each estate, and popular departures sell out in summer, so book ahead. It is a relaxed way to visit several estates without anyone having to drive.

When is harvest in the Cape Winelands?

Harvest usually runs from about February into March, depending on the grape variety and the season’s weather. Cellars are busy and fragrant, and some estates offer harvest-time activities. Summer heat peaks at the same time, so plan tastings for mornings and late afternoons.

Is Constantia part of the Cape Winelands?
