A Mabamba Swamp shoebill trip is the easiest way to look for one of Africa’s most sought-after birds without leaving the Entebbe area. Mabamba Bay is a wetland of roughly 2,424 hectares on the shore of Lake Victoria, west of Entebbe, protected as a Ramsar site since 2006 and listed as an Important Bird Area. Local guides and boatmen take visitors out in canoes along channels cut through the papyrus to the places where shoebills hunt.
Shoebills live here all year and are often found, but a sighting is never certain. The bird hunts by standing motionless for long periods, waiting for a lungfish to rise, so patience pays and early mornings, when the water is calm and the light soft, are best. Because the swamp is close to the airport, the trip fits neatly into an arrival afternoon or a final morning, and it opens the 10-day Uganda birding safari.

We place the trip on the morning after you land, or on your last morning before an evening flight.
Your guide collects you early for the drive west from Entebbe through farmland and small fishing settlements to the swamp edge.
At the landing, a local guide and boatman take you out in a wooden canoe, often fitted with a small outboard, into the papyrus channels.
Guides share news of where shoebills are standing, and the boat approaches slowly, cutting the engine or paddling for the final stretch.
After two or three hours on the water you return to Entebbe for lunch, a day room or the airport.

Good to know
Shoebills are resident and often seen, but no one can promise one on a given morning. Going early, staying patient and letting the guides share sightings gives you the best odds. If you miss it, the Murchison delta offers another chance on routes heading north.
Yes, if you land by late morning and feel up to it; afternoon trips work, though the light is harsher and the birds less active. Most travelers prefer to sleep in Entebbe and go the next morning before driving on.
Allow about 1–1.5 hours each way by road, depending on traffic and the condition of the last unpaved stretch. Some trips cross part of the bay by boat instead, when that option is operating.
