Best forTravelers with close to two weeks who want primates, savanna and the Nile, and are happy with a few long road days
Trip typePrivate safari

This 12-day Uganda safari itinerary is for travelers who want the whole western half of the country rather than a gorilla-only trip. It links seven quite different places by road: a rhino sanctuary, the Nile at Murchison Falls, the primate forest of Kibale, the channels and plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi’s Buhoma sector and the small savanna park at Lake Mburo. You keep the same guide and vehicle throughout, so by the time you reach the gorillas, the person beside you knows exactly how you like to travel.

Uganda’s distances are real, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Three days on this route involve six to seven hours on the road (days 2, 4 and 11), broken by rhino tracking, lunch stops and views along the Albertine Rift; every other transfer is short or doubles as a game drive. If the last long drive doesn’t appeal, you can fly from Kihihi to Entebbe on day 11 instead. Compared with the familiar eight-day Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi loop, this adds the north, Ishasha and Lake Mburo, and gives each place room to breathe.

Why this route works

Heading north first puts the longest stretch of tarmac at the start, while you are fresh, and Ziwa breaks it neatly in the middle. From Murchison the route drops south along the Albertine Rift through Hoima and Fort Portal instead of returning via Kampala, which saves most of a day. Kibale comes before Queen Elizabeth so that chimp tracking falls on a morning when you have slept at the forest edge. Ishasha follows the Kazinga Channel because it lies on the way to Buhoma and turns a transfer into another game drive. Three nights in Bwindi leave room for a second trek, and Lake Mburo splits the return so the final day is a walk followed by a four- to five-hour run to the airport.

Itinerary

Day by Day

A suggested flow — every day can be reshaped around you.

  1. Day 1 · Entebbe International Airport

    Landing Beside Lake Victoria

Drive · Entebbe International AirportEntebbe · about 10–20 minutes

Entebbe sits on a peninsula in Lake Victoria about 46 km from Kampala, so your first night is spent on the quiet lakeshore rather than in the capital’s traffic. Your guide meets you in arrivals and settles you into your hotel. Depending on your landing time, there may be an hour for a stroll through lakeside gardens where fish eagles call from the treetops. Over dinner, your guide walks you through how the twelve days fit together and what time tomorrow’s early start will be.

    • Private meet-and-greet at Entebbe International Airport
    • Lakeshore stroll if time allows
    • Route briefing over dinner

  2. Day 2 · Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Rhinos on Foot, Then North to the Nile

Drive · EntebbeMurchison Falls National Park · about 6–7 hours including rhino trackingZiwa Rhino Sanctuary lies roughly halfway, about 164 km north of Kampala.

An early start takes you around Kampala and north through Luwero’s farmland to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the base of Uganda’s rhino recovery since 2005. Here you leave the vehicle and walk with a sanctuary ranger to find southern white rhinos grazing in the bush, keeping close together and following hand signals; our Ziwa rhino tracking page explains how it works. After lunch, the road continues through Masindi and into Murchison Falls National Park, skirting the edge of Budongo Forest. You reach the Victoria Nile in the late afternoon, in time for a drink as the river turns gold.

    • Drive via Masindi and the edge of Budongo Forest

  3. The Nile thundering through the gorge at Murchison Falls

    Day 3 · Murchison Falls

The Falls from Below and Above

Start with a dawn drive on the north bank, where giraffe browse the scattered acacias and Uganda kob graze in loose herds on the open grass; lions are around but take some finding. Return for lunch and a rest, then board the afternoon launch from Paraa for about two hours upstream, with hippos grunting in the shallows and crocodiles motionless on the banks, to the base of the falls. Late in the day, drive up to the Top of the Falls and walk to the viewpoints above the gorge. Your guide may switch the order to suit launch times and the light.

    • Dawn game drive on the north bank
    • Afternoon launch to the base of the falls
    • Top of the Falls viewpoint walk

  4. Chimpanzee resting in the Kibale Forest canopy

    Day 4 · Kibale Forest

    South Along the Albertine Rift

Drive · Murchison FallsKibale National Park · about 6–7 hoursVia Hoima and Fort Portal; timings vary with road works and weather.

This is the longest day on the road, so you leave soon after breakfast and take it in easy stages. The route runs south through Hoima’s farmland and along the eastern side of the Albertine Rift, with lunch on the way. Beyond Fort Portal the land turns to tea estates, and on a clear afternoon the Rwenzori Mountains, the fabled Mountains of the Moon, stand above the plantations to the west. You arrive at the forest edge near Kibale in the late afternoon, greeted by the calls of monkeys and hornbills settling for the night.

    • Scenic drive via Hoima and Fort Portal
    • Tea-country views, with the Rwenzori on clear days
    • Evening at the edge of Kibale Forest
    Overnight
    Kibale
    Meals
    Breakfast, lunch & dinner
  5. Day 5 · Kibale Forest

    Chimpanzees at Kanyanchu

Chimp tracking leaves Kanyanchu at 08:00, and we request the morning slot, when the communities are usually at their most vocal. A UWA ranger guide leads you along forest trails toward the pant-hoots, and once the chimps are found you have an hour with them, often craning up into fig trees before they drop to the ground and move off fast. Kibale has 13 primate species, so red colobus and red-tailed monkeys may appear too; our chimpanzee trekking page compares Uganda’s sites. In the afternoon, walk the trails of Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary with a community guide.

  6. Safari boats on the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Day 6 · Queen Elizabeth NP

Crater Country to the Kazinga Channel

Drive · KibaleQueen Elizabeth National Park · about 2.5–3 hours

The drive south skirts old volcanic craters, several of them filled with lakes, and drops toward the Rift Valley floor, crossing the equator on the way into Queen Elizabeth National Park. After lunch overlooking the water, you board the afternoon launch on the Kazinga Channel, the roughly 40 km waterway that joins Lake George to Lake Edward. For about two hours the boat hugs the bank past hippos packed shoulder to shoulder, buffalo wallowing in the shallows, elephants drinking and pied kingfishers hovering overhead.

    • Drive past crater lakes and across the equator
    • Afternoon Kazinga Channel launch
    • Sunset over the channel or Lake Edward

  7. Day 7 · Ishasha

Kasenyi at Dawn, Ishasha by Afternoon

Drive · MweyaIshasha sector · about 2.5–3 hoursMuch of it on park tracks, with game viewing on the way.

Leave before sunrise for the Kasenyi plains, where Uganda kob gather on their breeding grounds and lions hunt among them in the half-light. After breakfast, you head south through the park to Ishasha, a remote sector of open grassland and scattered fig trees near the Congolese border. The afternoon drive is spent checking those figs, because Ishasha’s lions have a habit of resting in their broad branches. It happens often enough to be famous, though not every day, and your guide knows where they have been lying recently. Topi and buffalo graze the plains between the trees.

    • Drive south through the park to Ishasha
    • Afternoon search for lions in the fig trees

  8. Day 8 · Buhoma

Up from the Plains into Bwindi

Drive · IshashaBuhoma, northern Bwindi · about 2 hours

A last early drive in Ishasha gives you a second look at the fig trees while the air is cool. Then the road leaves the savanna, crosses the farming country around Kihihi and begins to climb, the vegetation thickening until Bwindi’s forest closes in around Buhoma. You arrive in time for lunch and an easy afternoon: unpack properly for three nights, lay out your trekking kit and listen to the forest from your veranda. Your guide confirms tomorrow’s briefing time and who in your party would like a porter.

  9. Day 9 · Buhoma

    Your Gorilla Trek

After breakfast you walk or drive the short distance to the Buhoma briefing point, where rangers assign groups to families. If walking is hard for anyone in your party, say so here: rangers try to match slower trekkers with nearer families, although nothing in the forest can be promised. With a walking stick in hand and a porter if you choose, you follow the trackers into the undergrowth. Once the gorillas are found, bags and sticks stay behind, and you spend a single hour watching them feed, groom and rest about ten meters away.

A Second Trek or a Community Day

Many travelers choose a second trek, because every family and every walk is different, and a second hour lets you put the camera down and simply watch. If one trek feels like enough, today belongs to the people around the park. A Batwa-led experience describes the forest life that ended when Bwindi became a national park in 1991, and a Buhoma community walk, run by residents of the village, visits farms, a traditional healer and craft workshops. The rest of the afternoon is free for a massage, a book or the view.

  11. Zebras grazing beneath acacias at Lake Mburo

    Day 11 · Lake Mburo

    East to Lake Mburo

Drive · BuhomaLake Mburo National Park · about 6–7 hoursAlternatively, fly Kihihi–Entebbe in about 1 hour 15 minutes and skip Lake Mburo.

The second long road day heads east out of the highlands through Rukungiri and Mbarara, across rolling hills, banana plantations and cattle country. Near Lake Mburo you start to see Ankole cattle with their enormous curved horns, part of a herding tradition in this region far older than the park itself. You reach Lake Mburo, a compact park of acacia, rocky outcrops and lakes, in the afternoon, in time for a late game drive among zebra and impala, two species you won’t have met anywhere else on this route.

  12. Day 12 · Lake Mburo

    A Morning Walk, Then Entebbe

Drive · Lake MburoEntebbe International Airport · about 4–5 hours

Lake Mburo is one of the few Ugandan parks where you can explore on foot, so the final morning starts with a guided walk alongside a UWA ranger among zebra, eland and topi, or with a boat trip on the lake for hippos and waterbirds. After an early lunch you drive east toward Kampala, stopping at the equator marker at Kayabwe for a photograph, then continue around the city to Entebbe for your evening flight. If you would rather arrive rested, a day room near the airport can be arranged.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

June–September
The main dry season in the west. Road days run more smoothly, the savanna grass is shorter for game viewing and forest trails are at their firmest, which is why permits for these months go first.
December–February
A warm, generally dry spell and a lovely time for the Kazinga Channel and Ishasha. Holiday weeks need booking well ahead.
March–May and October–November
Rain can add an hour or more to the unpaved stretches and makes treks muddier, although primates are found all year. In these months we often suggest the Kihihi flight on day 11.

Make It Yours

  • Fly Kihihi–Entebbe on day 11 and skip Lake Mburo
  • Add two nights in Jinja at the start or end for the source of the Nile and white-water rafting
  • Swap Buhoma for Rushaga to include the gorilla habituation experience
  • Upgrade Kibale to the chimp habituation experience for a full morning with a community
  • Add a boat trip toward the Nile delta for shoebill on your Murchison day
  • Add a Queen Elizabeth night for one of UWA’s research-style lion or mongoose tracking activities

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is 12 days enough to see Uganda properly?

It is enough to see the western and northern highlights at a sensible pace, with two or more nights wherever it matters most. It leaves out Kidepo in the far north-east and Mgahinga in the south-west, which suit a fly-in route or a separate trip. With only a week, a shorter gorilla-focused journey makes more sense than squeezing this one.

Which days on this Uganda route involve long drives?

Three days are long: Entebbe to Murchison via Ziwa, Murchison to Kibale, and Buhoma to Lake Mburo each take six to seven hours with stops. The others take about two to three hours, and several double as game drives. Roads are mostly paved, with unpaved sections near the parks that slow down in the rains.

How likely are we to see Ishasha’s tree-climbing lions?

Ishasha’s lions rest in fig trees often enough to be well known, but it is never certain on a given afternoon or morning. Your two drives there give you a reasonable chance, and your guide will know which trees the prides have favored lately. Even without lions in the branches, Ishasha’s quiet plains are rewarding.

Can children come on this safari?

Children aged 12 and over can join chimp tracking, and gorilla trekking starts at 15 under UWA rules. Younger children can enjoy the launches, game drives and Lake Mburo, but an adult would need to stay with them on primate days, so the route suits families with teenagers best.
