Permits, distances and lodge levels decide most of what a private Uganda safari costs. Here is how each line works, with the official fees quoted and dated.
The cost of a Uganda safari rests on three decisions more than any others: how many primate permits you buy, how much of the country you cover, and which level of lodge you choose. Permits and park fees are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and cost the same whichever company books them. Almost everything else moves with your choices.
Uganda is often called the better-value gorilla country, and on permits alone that holds: its gorilla permit has long been priced well below Rwanda’s. But Uganda’s parks are spread out, so a full loop means more days with a vehicle and guide, and more nights overall. This guide shows where the money goes, line by line, so you can read any quote with confidence.
Official Fees
These are UWA’s previous rates for foreign non-residents, the category most US, UK and EU visitors fall into, from its Conservation Tariff for July 2024 to June 2026. That tariff has expired, so treat the figures as a dated reference, not current prices.

2026–27
Several Ugandan safari companies and park news sites reported that on 26 February 2026 UWA’s Executive Director announced changes to permit pricing, but none cites a published UWA tariff. The reports describe a reduced low-season rate for gorilla and chimpanzee permits in April, May and November, and increases to some other products, including the gorilla habituation experience.
They disagree on the effective date, some citing 1 July 2026 and others 1 January 2027, and UWA had not published the new tariff at the time of writing. We don’t quote unofficial figures. When you book, we confirm the rate for your trekking dates in writing, and our gorilla permits guide will be updated as soon as the official tariff appears.
Price Drivers
Seven choices explain most of the difference between two Uganda quotes.
Each gorilla trek is a separate permit, and many travelers add a second trek or a chimp permit. For a couple, the permits alone can equal several nights of accommodation, so decide early how many primate days you want.
Entebbe to Bwindi is a full day on the road, while a scheduled domestic flight to Kihihi or Kisoro takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. Flights add fares but save vehicle days and sometimes a night, and they limit you to about 15 kg of luggage in soft bags.
Your private vehicle and driver-guide are a fixed daily cost, shared by everyone aboard. Uganda’s distances mean more vehicle days than a compact Rwanda trip, and four travelers share that cost far more efficiently than two.
Uganda’s stays run from characterful comfort lodges to a small number of genuinely luxurious forest, crater-lake and river lodges. Exclusive-use, top-tier properties are rare here compared with Rwanda, so the very top of the market is smaller.
Flying into Kigali for southern Bwindi and Mgahinga can replace a long drive or a domestic flight from Entebbe, but it adds a border crossing and often the East Africa Tourist Visa to your paperwork.
Lodges price by season, with the drier months highest, and a reduced permit rate for April, May and November has been reported but not yet confirmed by UWA. Any saving comes with muddier trails and slower roads.
Uganda rewards slower journeys. Two nights per stop means fewer transfer days and more time in each park, so a 12-day loop costs more in total than a six-day gorilla trip but often less per night.

Road or Air
Driving is the traditional way to see Uganda, and much of the country is lovely from the road: tea estates, crater lakes, banana groves and busy market towns. The cost is time. Kampala to Queen Elizabeth is about 7–8 hours by road and Kampala to Kibale about six, while Entebbe to Bwindi is usually planned as a full day, often broken with a night at Lake Mburo.
Scheduled domestic flights link Entebbe with Kihihi and Kisoro for Bwindi, with Kasese and Mweya for Queen Elizabeth and, on fewer days, with Murchison and Kidepo. They save days but add fares, and baggage is limited to about 15 kg in soft bags, hand luggage included. Kidepo makes the clearest case for flying: about ten hours each way by road, against a single flight.

Put the investment into the primate days first. A second gorilla trek or the habituation experience changes a Uganda trip far more than an upgrade at your Entebbe hotel ever could. Next, pay for position near the trailhead: a lodge a few minutes from the briefing point turns a 07:30 start from a rush into a gentle morning.
Third, consider flying one long leg, usually the return from Bwindi to Entebbe, to swap a day in the vehicle for a final morning in the forest. Where can you hold back? On the number of parks. Uganda is best seen slowly, and a route that drops one stop to gain a night elsewhere is usually the stronger trip.

On permits, historically yes: under UWA’s previous tariff (2024–26), the gorilla permit was well below Rwanda’s, and current rates must be confirmed. The gap narrows once you add Uganda’s longer transfers and extra vehicle days. For travelers who also want chimps and savanna parks, Uganda often delivers more variety for the investment.
Not for the trek day itself: under UWA’s tariff, the gorilla permit includes park entry for that day, and the Kibale chimp permit includes entry too. Other days in a park, and activities such as Kyambura chimps or golden monkeys, carry park entry per person per 24 hours.
Start with a nightly figure for the lodge level you prefer, multiplied by nine nights, then add permits, any domestic flights and extras such as visas, insurance and gratuities. Permits are the line people underestimate, because two gorilla treks and a chimp permit for two travelers add up quickly. We turn that estimate into an itemized quote for your dates.
For Kidepo, almost always, because the road takes about ten hours each way. For Bwindi, flying saves a full day in each direction and suits shorter trips. On longer journeys, many travelers drive in through the country and fly back to Entebbe.
Some lodges lower their rates in the wetter months, and a reduced gorilla and chimp permit rate for April, May and November has been reported, although UWA had not published it at the time of writing. In return you accept muddier trails and, reportedly, low-season permits that can’t be rescheduled.
