On the water
From the water, the Chobe riverfront becomes a stage: elephants wading out to grassy islands, hippos surfacing beside the hull, fish eagles calling overhead.
A Chobe River cruise is the simplest and often the most rewarding way into Chobe National Park. The river forms the park’s northern boundary, with Namibia’s floodplains on the far bank, and in the dry winter months hundreds of elephants can gather along it at once. From a boat you watch them drink, splash, dust themselves and swim between the bank and the islands, often at close range and at eye level, while hippos, crocodiles and buffalo share the scene. The river even changes direction in some years, depending on which of its tributaries fills first.
The choice that shapes your experience is the boat. Shared launches from Kasane carry a larger group on a fixed schedule; a private boat lets your guide linger at a sighting and pick quieter stretches; photographic boats add swivel seats and camera mounts for low-angle work. Birders are well served too, with more than 460 species recorded in the park, from African fish eagles and kingfishers to carmine bee-eaters and, very occasionally, the elusive Pel’s fishing owl.

Afternoon cruises catch elephants coming down to drink and the sunsets, but they are also the busiest. Morning trips are cooler and quieter, with softer light, so if you have two nights, try one of each.
Yes. Day trips cross the border at Kazungula and typically combine a boat cruise with a game drive, returning the same evening. Border formalities take time out of the day, so a night or two in Kasane gives you far more time on the river.
Shared launches follow a set route and schedule with a larger group, which suits a first taste. A private boat moves at your pace, holds position at a good sighting for as long as is sensible, and can be timed to avoid the busiest hours.
A houseboat suits travelers who want to wake up on the water and fit several outings into each day without transfers. Cabins are compact and some houseboats are based on the Namibian side, so they work best for two or three nights.
