The falls and one of Africa’s great elephant rivers, joined by an 80 km drive rather than a flight. It makes an easy first taste of Botswana, or a neat ending to a longer southern Africa trip.

Trip typePrivate safari

This Victoria Falls and Chobe safari is the simplest way to fit the falls and Botswana’s wildlife into one short trip. You spend two nights at the falls, then drive about 80 km to Kasane on the Chobe River, where Chobe National Park begins barely 10 km from town. There are no bush flights and no long road days, and the scheduled jets in and out carry ordinary airline baggage allowances, which makes it a relaxed first safari as well as a practical bolt-on.

Most travelers attach it to something else: Cape Town and a Greater Kruger reserve in South Africa, or a Zimbabwe circuit through Hwange. Three nights on the river give you three dawns and three sunsets on the water, which is what Chobe does best. If you have longer, the 11-day journey follows the same opening and continues into Khwai and the Okavango Delta.

Why this route works

Six days leave no room for flights between camps, so this route uses geography instead. Victoria Falls has the better international connections, which is why you arrive there, and two nights are enough to see the falls without losing a day to logistics. Kasane lies about 80 km away across a single border, a shorter door-to-door journey than any flight. The Chobe then gets three nights, because the river rewards repetition: morning and evening light change everything, and elephant movements differ from one day to the next. You leave from Kasane’s airport, or drive back to Victoria Falls if your onward flight departs from there.

Itinerary

Day by Day

A suggested flow — every day can be reshaped around you.

  1. Day 1 · Victoria Falls

    Arrival on the Zambezi

Drive · Victoria Falls AirportYour hotel or lodge · about 25–30 minutes

Your regional flight lands at Victoria Falls Airport, whether you connect through Johannesburg or arrive straight from a safari elsewhere in southern Africa. A driver meets you for the run into town, about 20 km and usually under half an hour. After a travel day the plan is simply to settle in. Depending on the level you choose, that means a boutique hotel within walking distance of restaurants, a grand old hotel near the rainforest gate, or a quiet lodge upstream where the Zambezi slides wide and calm past wooded islands.

  2. Day 2 · Victoria Falls

    The Smoke That Thunders

A local guide takes you through the rainforest that the spray keeps permanently green, pausing at viewpoints along the lip of the chasm. Bring a light rain jacket in the high-water months, roughly February to May, when mist drifts across the path; later in the dry season you see more rock, more rainbows and more of the gorge’s structure. The rest of the day is yours for a sunset cruise on the upper river, a short helicopter flight or rafting when the river allows. Our Victoria Falls guide explains which activities suit which months.

    • Optional sunset cruise or helicopter flight

  3. Day 3 · Kasane

    Kazungula and the First Boat

Drive · Victoria FallsKasane · about 1–1.5 hours plus border timeThe Kazungula Road border is open from early morning to evening, about 06:00–20:00 at the time of writing.

Leave the falls after a leisurely breakfast for the drive to the Botswana border, around an hour through mopane woodland. Formalities at the Kazungula Road post can be quick or slow depending on the day, and your driver walks you through the paperwork. By lunchtime you are in Kasane, checking into a lodge on the riverbank or stepping aboard your houseboat. The afternoon boat safari is when Chobe makes sense: elephant families wading between the Botswana bank and the Namibian floodplain, hippos surfacing beside the hull and herons stalking the shallows.

  4. Elephant herd on the Chobe riverfront floodplain

    Day 4–5 · Chobe Riverfront

Two Full Days on the Chobe

How these days run depends on where you sleep. From a Kasane lodge, you enter the park at dawn for a drive along the floodplain tracks, where lion and leopard are sometimes found and buffalo file down to drink, then return to the water each afternoon. On the premium houseboat, the river becomes your whole world: small tender boats take you out at first and last light, and between outings you watch the banks from the deck with a drink in hand. Either way, national-park rules end game viewing at dusk, so evenings are for dinner under the stars.

  5. Day 6 · Kasane

    Onward from Kasane

Flight · Kasane AirportJohannesburg · about 1.75 hoursAlternatively, road back to Victoria Falls Airport, about 1.5–2 hours with the border.

Take one last early boat or drive, then transfer to Kasane’s airport, a few kilometers south of town, for a scheduled flight to Johannesburg and your connection home. If your international flight leaves from Victoria Falls instead, you return by road the way you came. Re-entering Zimbabwe may need a different visa from the single-entry one you arrived on, and we confirm which you need once your flights are set. Departures are timed so you are never rushing a border to make a plane.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

May–June
The falls are still in heavy flow and the bush is drying out, so herds begin returning to the Chobe as inland pans empty. Mild days make long hours on the water comfortable.
July–October
Peak season on the river, with the largest elephant gatherings as the dry season deepens. By October the heat is intense and the curtain of water at the falls has thinned noticeably.
November–April
Rains bring green scenery, newborn impala and migrant birds, but elephants spread into the interior and river viewing becomes more varied. The falls build from about February to a peak around April, when spray can hide the view.

Make It Yours

  • Add a night for a completely free day at the falls
  • Stay in Livingstone on the Zambian side, crossing at the Kazungula Bridge
  • Book a photographic boat for low-angle elephant work
  • Continue by light aircraft into the Okavango Delta for three nights
  • Combine with Hwange for a longer two-country trip
  • Begin in Cape Town or a Greater Kruger reserve

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is a houseboat or a lodge better for a Chobe safari?

A lodge suits travelers who want morning game drives on land as well as boats, plus a pool and more space. A houseboat trades the drives for more time on the water, with small tender boats for game viewing and sunsets from the deck. Moorings and permits differ between boats, and some tie up on the Namibian side, so we confirm exactly how yours operates before you commit.

Can I see Chobe as a day trip from Victoria Falls instead?

You can, and many people do, but the border crossing takes a slice of the day and you miss the dawn and dusk hours when the river is most active. Three nights let you see Chobe at its best times and in changing conditions. The Botswana and Victoria Falls planning page on this site compares the two approaches in detail.

Do I need visas for Zimbabwe and Botswana on this trip?

At the time of writing, US passport holders need no visa for Botswana, and Zimbabwe issues visas on arrival or online. Flying home from Kasane usually means a single-entry Zimbabwe visa is enough, whereas returning to Victoria Falls airport means entering Zimbabwe twice. Botswana also asks for a yellow-fever certificate if you have transited a risk country such as Kenya or Ethiopia, so check current rules before travel.

How does this fit onto a South Africa trip?

Easily. Johannesburg has regular flights to both Victoria Falls and Kasane, so these six days slot in between Cape Town and a safari, or at the end. Remember that Cape Town is malaria-free while Victoria Falls and Chobe lie in malaria areas, so plan prevention with a travel-health clinic.
