Botswana Travel Guide
Visa-free for US visitors, but not paperwork-free: what to carry, what to declare, and which flight routings trigger a yellow fever check.
At the time of writing (September 2026), the core Botswana entry requirements for US citizens are simple: you do not need a visa for a tourist visit. The exemption allows stays of up to 90 days within any 365-day period, which covers any safari comfortably. Botswana runs an official e-visa portal, but it serves nationalities that need a visa, not US passport holders.
Visa-free does not mean paperwork-free. The documents that most often cause trouble at Maun or Kasane are passports short on validity or blank pages, a missing yellow fever certificate after a connection through a risk country, and missing birth certificates for traveling children. Each is easy to fix at home and hard to fix at the border.

Routing
Botswana is not a yellow fever risk country, and most travelers flying from the US via Johannesburg need no certificate at all. The rule that catches people is about where you have been, not where you live. Botswana requires proof of vaccination from travelers aged one and over who arrive from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission, and that includes anyone who has passed through an airport in such a country, whatever the length of the stop.
In practice, three routings trigger it. Arriving straight from a gorilla trek in Uganda or a Masai Mara safari in Kenya, both on the WHO risk list, means you need the certificate. So does connecting through Addis Ababa, because Ethiopia is also listed, even if you never leave the airport. Arriving from Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia or South Africa does not trigger the rule.
If your route needs it, get vaccinated at an authorized clinic at least ten days before you arrive, which is when the certificate becomes valid; under current WHO rules it then lasts for life. If you cannot have the vaccine for medical reasons, ask your clinic about an exemption letter and tell us, as a different routing may avoid the issue. Most safari travelers enter Botswana at one of the points below. The hours come from Botswana Tourism’s published list and can change, so check them against your flight or transfer times.
The gateway for the Okavango Delta, Moremi and Khwai, with published hours of roughly 07:30–16:30. Formalities are usually quick, and light-aircraft connections leave from the same apron.
About 4 km from Kasane town and the natural entry point for Chobe, with published hours of roughly 06:00–18:00.
The crossing used by most road transfers from Victoria Falls, about 80 km away. Published hours are roughly 06:00–20:00; allow time for both sets of formalities.
Opened in May 2021, the bridge replaced the old ferry between Kasane and the Zambian side and is the usual route from Livingstone.
Used on Namibia combinations through the Zambezi Region, with published hours of roughly 07:00–18:00, about 51 km west of Kasane by tarred road.
Many Botswana safaris begin or end at Victoria Falls, which means crossing into Zimbabwe or Zambia under their own entry rules. At customs, Botswana expects you to declare goods acquired outside the country, and the cash threshold of BWP 10,000 applies in either direction of travel. If you hold two nationalities, the UK government advises entering Botswana on the same passport you used to leave the previous country, so keep your documents consistent through a multi-country trip.
