Combining Countries
Victoria Falls lies about 80 km by road from Kasane and the Chobe riverfront, so the falls and a Botswana safari fit together almost seamlessly. Here is how to route them.
Botswana and Victoria Falls make one of the easiest two-country combinations in Africa. The falls sit on the Zambezi between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and Botswana’s safari town of Kasane, on the Chobe River, is only about 80 km away by road. That makes the Chobe riverfront the hinge of the trip: a short drive from the falls in one direction, and a light-aircraft hop from Khwai and the Okavango Delta in the other.

The Map
The falls lie just beyond Botswana’s north-eastern corner, east of Kasane. Chobe’s riverfront is the closest region to them; the Okavango Delta, Khwai and the northern concessions sit to the west and south-west, linked to Kasane by short flights.

Getting Between Them
Four practical links, with typical times. Border posts keep set hours and schedules change, so we confirm each leg for your dates.

Which Order
Both work. The deciding factors are usually your international flights and how you like to arrive and leave.
Fly into Victoria Falls via Johannesburg, give yourself two nights to recover from the long journey with the falls on your doorstep, then cross by road to Kasane. The safari builds from Chobe’s riverfront to the quieter Delta, and you fly home from Maun. This is the shape of our 11-day journey.

Borders & Visas
At the time of writing (September 2026), US citizens can visit Botswana without a visa, and the Kazungula crossing is a routine road border. Zimbabwe and Zambia each have their own visa rules, and the KAZA UNIVISA can cover both on some itineraries; it is explained in the travel guides of our Zimbabwe and Zambia sections. Three details catch travelers out. Each crossing adds stamps, so carry plenty of blank passport pages. Families need children’s full birth certificates when entering or leaving Botswana, at a road border as much as at an airport. And while Zimbabwe and Zambia are not yellow-fever risk countries, a routing through Kenya, Uganda or Ethiopia earlier in the trip can trigger Botswana’s certificate requirement.
The Day Trip
A Chobe day trip is widely sold from the falls, and it is a genuine option if you have only one spare day. A typical version collects you early, drives to the Kazungula border, clears Botswana formalities, then combines a boat cruise on the Chobe River with a game drive on the riverfront, returning you across the border before it closes.
The trade-off is time and light. Border formalities twice in one day eat into the hours you spend in the park, and a day trip puts you on the river in the middle of the day, when the light is harsh and many animals rest. You also miss the early morning, often the most rewarding time on the riverfront.
Two nights in Kasane or on the river change the experience completely. You get a dawn drive, a late-afternoon boat when elephant herds often come down to drink, and one border crossing instead of two. If Chobe matters to you, stay; if it is a bonus to a falls-focused trip, the day trip is a fair taste. Timing
The falls follow the Zambezi’s flow; Botswana’s safari follows the dry season. They peak at different times.

How Long
Two nights suits most travelers. Regional flights from Johannesburg often land around midday, so the first afternoon is for settling in and perhaps a sunset on the upper Zambezi, and the full day that follows covers a guided visit to the falls and one activity. Three nights make sense if you want both sides of the falls, a helicopter flight and time for the town’s restaurants, or if you arrive late.
One night is tight. It leaves no margin for a delayed connection through Johannesburg and turns the falls into a quick stop rather than a stay. On the safari side, give Chobe at least two nights and the Delta three, so the whole trip does not become a sequence of transfers.

Victoria Falls town is about 80 km by road from Kasane, the gateway to Chobe’s riverfront, and the park gate is only about 10 km from Kasane. Allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half of driving, plus time at the border.
Either works. Falls first gives you an easy recovery from long flights before the safari; falls last gives you a relaxed finish with hotels and restaurants before heading home. Your international flight times usually decide it.
It is a fair taste if you only have one day, combining a river cruise and a game drive. But two border crossings and midday timing limit what you see, and two nights in Kasane give you dawn and dusk on the river. If Chobe is a priority, stay overnight.
Not because of Zimbabwe or Zambia, which are not on the World Health Organization’s list of yellow-fever risk countries. You do need one if you arrived from, or transited through, a risk country such as Kenya, Uganda or Ethiopia, however briefly. Check the current rules before you travel.
Scheduled regional flights have linked Maun and Victoria Falls in about an hour to an hour and a half, which is handy when the Delta starts or ends your trip. Services change from season to season, so we confirm current schedules before building a route around one.
