A Rwanda and Tanzania safari joins the two experiences that top most East Africa wish lists: an hour with mountain gorillas and the big-sky game viewing of the Serengeti. The journey starts in Rwanda, with a night in Kigali and three in Volcanoes National Park, time enough for a gorilla trek and a second primate morning.
A regional flight then takes you from Kigali to Kilimanjaro, where a night on a coffee estate near Arusha breaks the journey before a light-aircraft hop into the Serengeti. Three nights there are followed by two on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, with a full morning on its floor. Putting the gorillas first means the most rule-bound, date-fixed part of the trip is done early, and the open-ended game drives follow.
Why this route works
Gorillas come first for two reasons. Your permit is fixed to a date and forfeited if you arrive late, so it belongs early, where a delayed long-haul flight can be absorbed; and after the intensity of the trek, the Serengeti’s long, open days feel like a reward. The flight from Kigali to Kilimanjaro is a regional service with a limited timetable, so we set your Rwanda dates around it and add a night on an Arusha coffee estate rather than connecting straight onto a light aircraft. The Serengeti comes before the crater so that you finish in the highlands, within a morning’s reach of Kilimanjaro Airport for the flight home.
