Travel advisory, last checked 23 September 2026: the US State Department rates Uganda Level 4, “Do Not Travel”, an advisory issued in May 2026 because of Ebola. WHO declared Uganda’s outbreak over on 27 August 2026; the outbreak in the neighbouring DRC continues. Read our dated safety guide before you decide.

Gorilla Habituation Experience

Set off before the day’s regular trekkers, follow the trackers off the trail and watch a wary family decide how close it will let people come — for up to four hours rather than one.

SeasonYear-round. June–August and December–February bring firmer ground; in the rains the off-trail sections are muddier and harder going.

The gorilla habituation experience in Uganda lets a handful of visitors join the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s habituation team for the day: the researchers, trackers and rangers who spend years getting a wild family used to human presence before it can be visited on standard treks. Instead of the usual single hour with a long-habituated group, you stay with the gorillas for up to four hours, in the southern Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

It is not simply a longer trek. A family in the middle of habituation is less predictable: the gorillas may move off repeatedly, feed deep in tangled undergrowth or react with warning grunts, and the team leaves the paths to stay with them. What you gain is time and context — watching the habituators note behavior, hearing why they hold back or move closer, and seeing a family relax, or not, over the course of a morning. If you want to understand the standard version first, the page on gorilla trekking in Uganda covers the one-hour visit.

Gorilla Habituation Experience

How It Works

  1. We secure the habituation permit first, since daily numbers are very small, and then book a lodge in the Rushaga area around it.

  2. You report to the Rushaga visitor centre early for a briefing from UWA staff on how the day differs from a standard trek.

  3. Trackers who left at first light radio the family’s position, and you follow them into the forest, often cutting through undergrowth where there is no path.

  4. Once you reach the family, you remain with them and the habituation team for up to four hours, keeping the distance the rangers set.

  5. The ranger calls time and you walk out together; how long the return takes depends entirely on where the gorillas led you.

Where You Can Do It

Rushaga sector, southern Bwindi
UWA runs the experience here, from the Rushaga visitor centre. The families involved have been reported as Bikingi and Bushaho, but UWA assigns them and the allocation can change.
Lodges around Rushaga and Lake Mutanda
The practical base for a 06:30 start; staying close means breakfast at the lodge rather than in a vehicle in the dark.
Nkuringo ridge
Workable for travelers already based there, but the drive to Rushaga makes for a very early departure.

Good to know

  • UWA sets the minimum age at 15, the same as for a standard gorilla trek.
  • Fees: under UWA’s previous conservation tariff (July 2024–June 2026, now expired), the habituation permit cost US$1,500 per foreign non-resident, with park entry for the day included. An increase for 2026–27 has been reported, but UWA had not published a new tariff at the time of writing (September 2026), so the current fee must be confirmed when we book.
  • Permits are paid in full at booking, and UWA’s reschedule and refund rules apply; our gorilla permit guide sets them out.
  • Wear long sleeves, gardening-style gloves and waterproof boots, because leaving the trail means nettles, thorns and wet vegetation.
  • Anyone with a cough, cold or fever may be turned away to protect the gorillas. Check current travel and health advisories before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

How is the gorilla habituation experience different from a normal gorilla trek?

A normal trek gives you one hour with a family that has met visitors almost daily for years. Habituation gives you up to four hours with a family still getting used to people, starts earlier and involves more off-trail walking. The group is also smaller, and you spend the day with the team doing the habituation work.

Is the habituation experience harder than a standard trek?

Usually, yes. The family is more likely to keep moving, the team follows them off the paths, and four hours on steep, wet ground is more tiring than one. Reasonable fitness and a tolerance for scratches and mud matter more than speed.

Should we combine it with a standard gorilla trek?

It works well as a pair. A standard trek shows you a relaxed, well-habituated family, and the habituation day shows you how that calm is earned. Three nights in the Rushaga area give you room for both, with a spare day for weather.

Is the four-hour visit worth the higher permit fee?

For photographers, returning trekkers and anyone fascinated by gorilla behavior, most find the extra time transforms the encounter. If this is your first and only trek and the terrain worries you, a standard permit may suit you better.
