This Kenya family safari and beach trip follows the country’s southern corridor rather than the Mara, which keeps the days varied and the transfers short enough for children. You spend two nights among the elephant families of Amboseli, two in the volcanic hills of Tsavo West, then ride the train down to the Indian Ocean for four nights on Diani Beach. The vehicle, the guide and the timetable are yours alone, so a game drive can end at the first yawn.

It is also a route children can follow on a map: from the capital, south past Kilimanjaro, across lava flows and springs, and down to the sea by rail. Why this route works

Amboseli, Tsavo West and the south coast sit in a natural line from Nairobi toward Mombasa, so each move is a short step forward rather than a doubling back through the capital. Amboseli comes first because its open swamps make elephants easy for small eyes to find, and two nights give you two chances at a clear Kilimanjaro dawn. Tsavo West follows after roughly two to three hours on the road past the Chyulu Hills. From there, the railway spares you the long run down the Nairobi–Mombasa highway, a two-lane road shared with heavy trucks, and turns the journey to the coast into an outing of its own. The beach comes last, when everyone is ready to stop, and a flight from Ukunda gets you back to Nairobi in about an hour and a half.

  1. Day 1 · Nairobi

    Landing in Nairobi’s Safari Suburbs

    Drive · Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) → Karen, Nairobi · about 45–90 minutes, depending on traffic

    Your driver is waiting as you clear immigration at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and the drive to the leafy suburbs of Karen and Langata takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on traffic. If your flight lands in the morning, there may be time for the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant nursery, where orphaned calves troop in for their milk bottles during the public visiting hour from 11:00, booked in advance. Nearby, the Giraffe Centre lets children feed Rothschild’s giraffes from a raised platform. Otherwise, the afternoon belongs to the garden, the pool and an early night.

    Day 2 · Amboseli

    South to Kilimanjaro’s Elephants

    Drive · Nairobi → Amboseli · about 4–5 hours — Or a flight of about 45 minutes from Wilson Airport.

    After breakfast you head southeast on the Mombasa road, then turn south at Emali across the dry Maasai plains, roughly four to five hours with a leg-stretching stop along the way. Families with toddlers often take the 45-minute flight from Wilson instead, and we can plan either. By mid-afternoon you are in Amboseli, where elephant families wade through swamps fed by water that filters down through Kilimanjaro’s volcanic rock. The first drive is short and gentle, timed for the late light, when the cloud around the mountain often thins and the snow cap seems to float above the herds.

  3. Day 3 · Amboseli

    A Full Day Among Amboseli’s Families

    Kilimanjaro is most often clear at dawn, so an early start is worth coaxing everyone out of bed for, with blankets in the vehicle against the chill. Amboseli’s elephants have been studied since 1972, and guides often know individual families by name and history, which turns each sighting into a story children remember. Later, climb Observation Hill for a view over the swamps, where hippos, buffalo and pelicans gather. Afternoons are for the pool. If you stay on the community lands outside the park, a short guided walk or a visit to a Maasai homestead can be arranged with the landowners.

    Day 4 · Tsavo West

    Past the Chyulu Hills to Mzima Springs

    Drive · Amboseli → Tsavo West · about 2–3 hours — Parts of the road are rough, so it runs at game-drive pace.

    The road east runs along the foot of the Chyulu Hills, a young volcanic range of green cones and black lava, before entering Tsavo West, a park more than twenty times the size of Amboseli. After lunch, drive to Mzima Springs, where rain that fell on the Chyulus resurfaces crystal clear after filtering through the lava. A short path follows the pools with a ranger, and when the underwater viewing chamber is open, children can watch fish, and occasionally a hippo, from below the surface. Crocodiles bask on the banks, so everyone keeps to the path.

  5. Day 5 · Tsavo West

    Lava Fields, Rhinos and Red Elephants

    Tsavo West is volcanic country, and today shows it. The Shetani lava flow, a sheet of black rock left by an eruption only a few centuries ago, is safe to scramble across with your guide, and its name means devil in Swahili, which children tend to enjoy. In the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, black rhinos live in thick bush, so a sighting is never assured, but the search is part of the adventure. Many of the elephants here look rusty red from dust-bathing in Tsavo’s soil. After dinner, a floodlit waterhole or a sky full of stars ends the day.

    Day 6 · Diani Beach

    All Aboard for the Indian Ocean

    Drive · Tsavo West → Mtito Andei or Voi station · about 1–2 hours — Then the Madaraka Express to Mombasa (roughly 2–3 hours, timetable permitting) and about 1.5–2 hours by road to Diani.

    After an early last drive, your guide takes you to the station at Mtito Andei or Voi for the Madaraka Express, the standard-gauge railway that has linked Nairobi and Mombasa since 2017. Stations screen luggage much as airports do, so you arrive well ahead of departure. As the line runs between Tsavo East and Tsavo West, elephants are sometimes spotted from the windows. At the Mombasa terminus, on the mainland outside the city, a driver meets you for the road south to Diani, and you reach the beach by late afternoon. If the timetable does not suit, a charter flight to Ukunda replaces the train.

  7. Day 7–9 · Diani Beach

    Reef, Rock Pools and Colobus Monkeys

    Diani’s coral reef lies offshore, so at low tide the lagoon becomes a warm, sheltered pool for younger swimmers, with rock pools and sea stars to find at its edge. One morning, visit Colobus Conservation, a local charity that protects the Angolan black-and-white colobus and strings rope bridges across the beach road so the monkeys can cross safely. For a full day out, an optional dhow trip from Shimoni visits the Kisite-Mpunguti marine park, where dolphins are often seen and the snorkelling is easy from the boat. The rest is sandcastles, ice cream and unhurried afternoons.

  8. Day 10 · Diani Beach

    A Short Flight Back to Nairobi

    Flight · Ukunda airstrip (Diani) → Nairobi Wilson Airport · about 1.5 hours — Alternatively, drive to Mombasa’s Moi International Airport for a domestic flight to JKIA.

    There is usually time for a last swim before the short drive to Ukunda airstrip, a few minutes from most Diani stays. The scheduled flight to Nairobi takes about an hour and a half, and coastal routes typically allow about 20 kg per person, a little more than the 15 kg common on bush flights; we confirm the allowance on your tickets. At Wilson, a driver takes you across the city to JKIA with a generous margin for traffic. If your international flight leaves late at night, a day room in Karen gives the children a shower and a rest first.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

July–October
Dry season in Amboseli and Tsavo, when elephants gather at swamps and springs, and the long US summer break. The coast is breezy with the southeast monsoon, and seaweed can wash up on exposed stretches of Diani until about August.
December–February
The coast at its calmest and clearest, and Amboseli green after the short rains, often with sharp views of Kilimanjaro. Christmas and New Year fill beach hotels early, so plan well ahead.
March–June
The long rains peak around April and May, tracks turn muddy and some smaller Diani hotels close. June is a pleasant shoulder month if school dates allow.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SGR train a good idea with children?

Most families find it a highlight. The Madaraka Express is a modern standard-gauge line with reserved seats and toilets on board, and your guide sees you through the station’s security screening. Timetables change, so we confirm the service for your dates and keep a charter flight to Ukunda as the fallback.

How long are the drives on this family safari?

The longest road day is Nairobi to Amboseli, roughly four to five hours with a break, and a 45-minute flight can replace it. Amboseli to Tsavo West takes about two to three hours, and the transfer to the station on day 6 is shorter still. Game drives last only as long as your children are enjoying them.

What age do children need to be for walks and snorkelling?

Guided bush walks are usually limited to children aged 12 and over, and each camp sets its own rule. The elephant nursery, the Giraffe Centre and Diani’s lagoon have no minimum age, and snorkelling at Kisite suits confident swimmers wearing a life jacket. A few smaller camps set a minimum age for staying at all, so we check every stay against your children’s ages.

Can we do this trip with a toddler?

Yes, with a few changes: fly to Amboseli, choose a lodge inside the park with a pool, and keep game drives to two or three hours. Infants without their own seat get no baggage allowance on light aircraft, so pack their things into a parent’s bag. Talk to your pediatrician early about malaria prevention for very young children.

Why Amboseli and Tsavo rather than the Masai Mara?

This southern route links to the coast by road and rail, so there are no flights until the last day, and Amboseli’s open swamps make elephants easy for children to spot. The Mara is superb but lies in the opposite direction from the beach and usually means flying. If the Mara is a must, it can be added by air before the coast.
