A 5-day Masai Mara safari is the most efficient way into Kenya’s best-known wildlife country, provided the few days you have are spent in the right place. This journey gives you one night in Nairobi to recover from the long-haul flight, then three nights in one of the private Masai Mara conservancies that wrap around the northern and eastern edges of the national reserve. You fly in and out, so almost every daylight hour after arrival goes to the bush.

The conservancy base is the whole point. On land leased from Maasai families, camps limit how many vehicles gather at a sighting and add what the reserve itself forbids: walks with Maasai guides, drives after dark and, in most conservancies, the freedom to leave the track for a good sighting. On day four you spend a full day in the Masai Mara National Reserve, heading for the Mara River when the herds are in, so a short trip still shows you both faces of the Mara.

Why this route works

By road, Nairobi to the Mara takes roughly five to six hours via Narok, which would swallow most of two days on a five-day trip; the scheduled flight takes about 45 minutes. The Nairobi night comes first because immigration queues, city traffic and the cross-town run to Wilson Airport make a same-day bush connection a gamble, and a missed light aircraft costs you a day in the Mara. All three bush nights are at one camp, so you unpack once and your guide has time to learn what excites you. A conservancy suits a short stay better than a reserve lodge: walks, night drives and quieter sightings pack more variety into each day, and one well-timed reserve day covers the river country.

  1. Day 1 · Nairobi

    Touchdown in Nairobi, Night in Karen

    Drive · Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) → Karen, Nairobi · about 1 hour, more in heavy traffic

    Many long-haul flights from the US, Europe and the Gulf reach Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the morning. Once you clear immigration with your eTA, a driver meets you and takes you to Karen, the green, low-rise suburb on the city’s south-western edge, about an hour away in normal traffic. After a shower and a rest, you can visit the Giraffe Centre, where Rothschild’s giraffe, a rare subspecies, lean down to a raised feeding platform, or simply sit in the garden with a pot of Kenyan tea. Karen is close to Wilson Airport, which keeps tomorrow’s start relaxed.

    Day 2 · Mara Conservancies

    Wheels Down on a Mara Airstrip

    Flight · Wilson Airport, Nairobi → Conservancy airstrip, Masai Mara · about 45 minutes — Luggage is typically limited to 15 kg per person, hand baggage included, packed in a soft bag.

    Mid-morning, your driver drops you at Wilson Airport, Nairobi’s domestic hub, where each light-aircraft company checks passengers in at its own small terminal. The flight west takes about 45 minutes over the Ngong Hills and the floor of the Rift Valley, and may touch down at another strip before yours. Your conservancy guide meets the plane beside the vehicle, and camp is usually a short drive away. After lunch and a rest, the afternoon drive introduces the conservancy’s rolling grassland and its residents, from lion prides and elephant families to topi standing sentry on termite mounds.

  3. Day 3 · Mara Conservancies

    On Foot by Day, by Spotlight After Dark

    Leave camp at first light, when lions are often still moving and hyenas are heading back to their dens. Mid-morning, you swap the vehicle for your boots: a Maasai guide and a ranger lead a walk of an hour or two, reading tracks, dung and the alarm calls of birds, and pointing out the plants Maasai families use as medicine. After dinner, a night drive with a shaded spotlight searches for animals rarely seen by day, such as aardvark, serval, white-tailed mongoose and springhare, and sometimes a leopard on the hunt.

    Day 4 · Masai Mara Reserve

    A Full Day in the National Reserve

    Today you pack breakfast and lunch and drive into the Masai Mara National Reserve, where you share the tracks with more vehicles but the plains open out on their grandest scale. Between about July and October your guide heads for the Mara River, where the migration herds gather and sometimes cross, though no crossing can be timed or promised. In other months the day centers on the reserve’s lion prides, cheetah on the short grass and leopards in the riverine thickets along the Talek. Reserve rules keep you on the tracks and out by dusk, and a quieter conservancy day is always an alternative.

  5. Day 5 · Mara Conservancies

    A Last Drive, Then Back to Nairobi

    Flight · Conservancy airstrip, Masai Mara → Wilson Airport, Nairobi · about 45 minutes–1 hour — The road transfer from Wilson to JKIA takes about 30–60 minutes.

    One more early drive gives you a final look at the conservancy before brunch and the short run to the airstrip. Most return flights reach Wilson Airport around midday or early afternoon. A driver meets you and takes you to a day room in Karen, where you can shower, repack and rest before the evening transfer to JKIA, with extra time allowed for Nairobi’s rush hour. If you are staying on in Kenya, this is also the natural point to fly on to the coast or north to Laikipia.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

July–October
The migration herds are usually in the Mara, with river crossings most likely from late July into September. Your reserve day heads for the river, and conservancy camps fill early, so plan well ahead. See our Mara migration guide for the month-by-month pattern.
December–March
Warm and mostly dry after the short rains, with young topi and gazelle on the plains and strong big-cat viewing. January and February are often the calmest months on the reserve’s roads.
June and November
Shoulder months. In June the grass is long after the rains and the herds may still be in Tanzania; November brings brief afternoon showers, a green flush and fewer vehicles.
April–May
The long rains close several conservancy camps and turn the black-cotton soil to mud, so we usually suggest other dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is five days enough for the Masai Mara?

Five days gives you three nights in the bush, which is the minimum most Mara specialists suggest and enough for a strong mix of big cats, plains game and conservancy activities. Because you fly, very little time is lost to travel. If you can add a day, a fourth Mara night is worth more than any extra stop.

Why fly to the Mara instead of driving?

By road, Nairobi to the Mara takes roughly five to six hours each way via Narok, with the final stretch on rough, dusty tracks. The flight takes about 45 minutes and lands you a short drive from camp. On a five-day trip, flying hands back most of two days for game viewing.

Can I do a 3 or 4 day Masai Mara safari instead?

Yes. A three-day version flies in and out with two conservancy nights, and four days keeps the Nairobi night plus two nights in the bush. With less time we usually drop the reserve day rather than the walk and night drive. Three bush nights remain the best balance for most first-timers.

What is the difference between staying in a conservancy and in the reserve?

The national reserve is public land, busier, and its rules forbid walking, night drives and off-road driving. The conservancies are private land leased from Maasai owners, where camps cap vehicles at sightings and offer walks and night drives. Staying in a conservancy and spending a day in the reserve gives you both.

How does the reserve ticket work on the day trip?

At the time of writing, reserve entry is sold as a 12-hour ticket valid from 06:00 to 18:00, whatever time you enter, and payment is cashless. That is why the reserve day starts at dawn with breakfast packed. The ticket for your included reserve day is arranged for you.
