The classic South Africa pairing, planned well: the right order, enough safari nights, a reserve that suits the routing and a flight that skips Johannesburg.
Cape Town and Kruger is the combination most first-time visitors to South Africa want, and for good reason. One half gives you a mountain-backed city, the Cape Peninsula and the Winelands; the other gives you the Big Five in the country’s richest wildlife region. Done well, the two halves feel like one journey rather than two trips stitched together.
Done badly, it means an extra night in Johannesburg, a two-night safari that ends just as you settle in, and a Cape Town stay squeezed into the worst of the winter weather. The difference lies in five decisions: the order, the nights, the reserve, the flights and the month. This guide works through each one and points to the journeys we have designed around them.
The Order
There is no single right answer, but the trade-offs are clear.

Either order works with direct Cape Town–Kruger flights. For US travelers we usually start in Cape Town, because the nonstop arrival makes the first day easier.
Nights
For most travelers, three to four nights in Cape Town and three to four on safari is the right shape, with two more in the Winelands if you have them. Cape Town needs the extra night because two of its highlights, Table Mountain and Robben Island, depend on the weather, and a spare day turns a cancellation into a simple reshuffle.
The safari needs three nights more than it seems. A private-reserve day brings two drives, one at dawn and one running into the evening, so two nights give you only four drives, including the afternoon you arrive and the morning you leave. A third night adds two more chances at the sightings that take patience, such as leopard, wild dog or a hunt, and lets the rhythm of the bush settle in. With four nights or more, many travelers split their time between two contrasting reserves.
If you can, add the Winelands after Cape Town as a stay rather than a day trip: two nights in Franschhoek or Stellenbosch, about an hour from the city, change the pace completely. Our Cape Winelands guide compares the towns.
The Reserve

Direct flights between Cape Town and the Kruger airports mean you rarely need to connect through Johannesburg. A typical sequence:
A nonstop from Newark, Washington-Dulles or Atlanta brings you into Cape Town, where a private transfer takes you to your hotel and the first day is yours to recover.
Scheduled services link Cape Town with Skukuza, Hoedspruit and Kruger Mpumalanga in about two and a half hours. Frequencies are limited, with Skukuza currently served once a day from Cape Town, so we secure the flight early.
From Skukuza, most Sabi Sand lodges are a short road transfer away; from Kruger Mpumalanga it is a longer drive or a light-aircraft hop, and light aircraft usually mean soft-sided bags.
When the safari ends, fly to Johannesburg to connect with your flight home, or back to Cape Town if the city comes second. The getting to Kruger guide covers airports, drive times and baggage in detail.
When to Go
The bush and the Cape peak in opposite seasons, so the sweet spots fall in between.

For most US travelers, Cape Town first works best, because nonstop flights land there and the city is a gentle place to recover from jet lag. Ending in the bush makes a game drive your last memory; ending in Cape Town gives you time to unwind before the flight home. Both work with direct flights between the two.
It is the minimum, not the ideal. Two nights at a private reserve give you about four game drives, including the arrival afternoon and the departure morning. A third night adds two more drives and a far better chance of the elusive species, and it is what we recommend for most trips.
Yes, with a tight but workable shape: three nights in Cape Town and three in a Sabi Sand or Greater Kruger lodge, linked by a direct flight. Anything shorter tends to feel rushed, and with ten days you can add the Winelands or a fourth night in the bush.
Victoria Falls is the easier addition: a direct flight from Kruger Mpumalanga reaches it in about an hour and a half, as on our 11-day three-icons journey. The Garden Route suits a trip of two weeks or more, since it is a road journey east of Cape Town rather than a short hop.
