Trip typePrivate safari

Most people looking for a Zanzibar itinerary of 7 days want two things from one short trip: the island’s layered history, and a beach where the sea is actually there when they want to swim. This route gives each its proper setting. You sleep two nights inside Stone Town, where the lanes are cool in the morning and the waterfront comes alive at dusk, then four on the north coast around Nungwi and Kendwa, where deep water lies a few strokes from the sand.

It is island-only by design, with no early flights and no single day asked to carry too much. Your private driver and guide handle every transfer, the spice farm and a sunset dhow are built in, and the optional extras, from a reef snorkel to the red colobus monkeys of Jozani, slot into the beach days without reshuffling the week. If you are adding a safari to the island, start with the Tanzania safari and Zanzibar planner instead.

Why this route works

Stone Town comes first because it is only 15–20 minutes from the airport, so even a late landing ends with dinner on a rooftop rather than a long drive across a dark island. Two nights give you one complete day there: the walk in the cooler morning, the spice farm after lunch and a second evening in the lanes. The beach comes last, when you want nothing scheduled. We pick the north coast for a first week because, although the tide rises and falls by up to about 4 m at spring tides here as everywhere on Zanzibar, the seabed shelves steeply, so you can swim at most hours. The drive north takes about an hour, and the airport is roughly 1 hour 20 minutes away on the final morning.

Itinerary

Day by Day

A suggested flow — every day can be reshaped around you.

  1. Weathered alleyway in historic Stone Town, Zanzibar

    Day 1 · Stone Town

Into the Old Town by Sunset

Drive · Zanzibar airportStone Town · about 15–20 minutes

A driver meets you outside arrivals at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, and 15–20 minutes later the car stops where Stone Town’s lanes become too narrow to drive; a porter wheels your bags the last few hundred meters. Settle in through the hottest part of the day. By about six o’clock, climb to a rooftop terrace as the call to prayer rolls across the tin roofs and the sun sinks into the channel. After dark, stroll down to Forodhani Gardens, where cooks grill octopus and skewers over charcoal and fold Zanzibar “pizza” on hot plates.

    • Private arrival transfer
    • Sunset from a rooftop terrace
    • Evening at the Forodhani night market
    Overnight

  2. Day 2 · Spice farms (Kizimbani & Kidichi)

    Carved Doors and Clove Buds

Your guide meets you after breakfast, while the lanes are still in shade. The walk takes in the Old Fort, built by the Omanis in the 17th century, the seafront Palace Museum and a gallery of carved wooden doors, many studded with brass, before pausing at Christ Church Cathedral, raised where the slave market stood until 1873; its memorial and heritage center ask for quiet time. The House of Wonders has been shut for restoration since part of it collapsed in 2020. After lunch, a drive of 20–40 minutes inland reaches a spice farm near Kizimbani or Kidichi, where you crush clove buds, taste fresh nutmeg and watch a palm climber at work.

  3. Day 3 · Kendwa

Tortoises or a Sandbank, Then North

Drive · Stone TownNorth coast (Kendwa or Nungwi) · about 1 hour

If the tide suits, the morning belongs to the water. A boat from the Stone Town beach takes about 20–30 minutes to reach Changuu, built as a prison in the 1890s but never used as one, where Aldabra giant tortoises now plod between the trees. Alternatively, head for the Nakupenda sandbank, a strip of white sand that surfaces around low tide, for a swim and a picnic of fresh fruit. Back by lunch, you drive north for about an hour past villages, cassava plots and mango trees, reaching Kendwa or Nungwi in time for a first swim before sunset.

    • Optional boat trip to Changuu or the Nakupenda sandbank
    • Private drive to the north coast
    • First swim before sunset

    Day 4 · Nungwi

    Boatyards and a Sunset Sail

Begin with a short trip up to Nungwi, at the island’s northern tip, where shipwrights still shape dhow hulls by hand on the beach and fishing boats come in with the morning catch. The afternoon is for the sea: the seabed drops off within a short swim of the shore, so the water stays deep enough for proper lengths through most of the tide cycle, and children can play in it without anyone checking a tide app. Late in the day you board a traditional dhow at Kendwa, its lateen sail filling in the breeze, and cruise the coast as the sun sets toward the mainland.

    • Morning visit to Nungwi’s dhow builders
    • Swimming and beach time at any tide
    • Included sunset dhow sail from Kendwa

  5. Day 5–6 · Nungwi

    Reef, Forest or Hammock

Two free days, shaped around what you enjoy. Snorkelers can take a boat to the reef around Mnemba, a longer ride from here than from the north-east coast but worth an early start, or to the coral gardens off Tumbatu Island; experienced divers can ask about the drift dives on Leven Bank. Our snorkeling and diving overview compares the sites. For shade and wildlife, a day trip south to Jozani Forest, roughly 1.5 hours each way, brings you among the endemic Zanzibar red colobus. Or stay put: a pool, a book and a swim whenever you feel like it is what this coast does best.

    • Optional Mnemba or Tumbatu snorkel trip
    • Optional drift dives for certified divers
    • Optional day trip to Jozani Forest

  6. Day 7 · Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ)

A Final Swim Before the Airport

Drive · North coastZanzibar airport · about 1 hour 20 minutes

With deep water close to shore, a last swim fits around almost any flight time. Check-out is usually late morning; for an evening departure we can arrange a day room, or plan a final afternoon in Stone Town, which lies on the way. The drive to the airport takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, longer in afternoon traffic around Zanzibar City. One rule before you pack: leave the shells on the beach, because taking seashells or other wildlife items out of Tanzania without a permit is illegal and arrests have been reported.

    • Final swim and late breakfast
    • Optional afternoon in Stone Town before an evening flight
    • Private transfer to Zanzibar airport

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

June–October
Dry, sunny and slightly cooler, with the south-east trade winds keeping the north coast breezy. The sea cools to about 25–26 °C by August. July and August book up early.
December–February
Hot, humid and mostly dry, with calmer seas and water around 29 °C. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks on the island.
Ramadan (roughly February to early March in 2027)
Stone Town is quieter by day and lively after sunset. Hotels and restaurants serving visitors stay open; eat and drink discreetly in public and dress a little more modestly.
March–May and November
April is usually the wettest month and some hotels close; November’s short rains tend to fall as showers between sunny spells. Flexible travelers find quieter beaches.

Make It Yours

  • Swap the north coast for Matemwe on the north-east shore, closer to the Mnemba reef
  • Base yourselves in Paje instead to learn kitesurfing in the trade-wind months
  • Add two or three nights on Pemba Island for wall diving and forest walks
  • Add a Stone Town night so Changuu and Chumbe Island’s coral park both fit
  • Fly out for a two- or three-night safari from Zanzibar in Nyerere

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for Zanzibar?

For Stone Town and one beach, yes: it gives you a full day in town and four unhurried nights on the coast, the balance most first-time visitors want. With nine or ten days, a second beach setting or a flight to Pemba or Mafia starts to make sense. Much less than a week usually forces a choice between the town and the sea.

Why does this itinerary use the north coast rather than the east?

The tide is just as big on both coasts, reaching about 4 m at spring tides, but the east coast is fronted by a wide, shallow lagoon that can drain for hundreds of meters at low water. Around Nungwi and Kendwa the seabed drops away quickly, so you can swim at most times of day. The east coast suits travelers happy to plan swims around high water, ideally with a pool to fall back on.

Can we snorkel at Mnemba from Nungwi or Kendwa?

Yes, boats run from the north coast, although the ride is longer than from Matemwe. The reef lies inside a conservation area with a daily visitor fee, and the island itself is private, so day visitors snorkel or dive but never step ashore. Leaving early beats the mid-morning rush of boats.

Do children need Zanzibar’s mandatory travel insurance?

At the time of writing (September 2026), every non-resident visitor needs the government’s inbound travel insurance, bought from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, and your own policy does not replace it. Children are charged a lower rate and very young children are reported to be exempt. Check the current terms on the official Visit Zanzibar portal before you fly.

Does this week work for a family with young children?

It is one of the easiest island routes for families: short transfers, a spice farm children can taste and smell their way through, tortoises on Changuu and a coast where the sea is swimmable most of the day. Choose the family resort in the premium tier for pools and a kids’ club, and pack reef shoes for rocky patches and sea urchins.
