Trip typePrivate safari

This southern Zimbabwe safari itinerary shares no stops with the country’s better-known north-west circuit. Instead of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi, it links two World Heritage Sites and one of southern Africa’s most remote parks by road: the granite hills of Matobo, the stone city of Great Zimbabwe and the cliffs and rivers of Gonarezhou National Park.

It is a journey about depth rather than volume. In Matobo you track white and black rhino on foot with an armed ZimParks scout; at Great Zimbabwe you walk through the capital of a Shona state that traded, through the coast, with China and Persia; and in Gonarezhou, the ‘Place of Elephants’, hours can pass without another vehicle in sight. The drives are long but scenic, the pace is gentler than a fly-in safari, and the reward is a side of Zimbabwe that most visitors never reach.

Why this route works

The south is a road circuit because its three highlights sit in a rough line from west to east and air links between them are scarce. Bulawayo has flights from Johannesburg and Harare and lies less than an hour from the Matobo Hills, so you start there with three nights: enough for a rhino-tracking morning, rock art, World’s View and a spare half-day if the rhino prove elusive. Great Zimbabwe, about four hours east, splits the long drive to Gonarezhou into two manageable days and lets you see the ruins in both evening and morning light. Gonarezhou gets four nights because it is vast, remote and the one stop that cannot be rushed. Buffalo Range Airport near Chiredzi clears international charters, so you fly out instead of driving back.

Itinerary

Day by Day

A suggested flow — every day can be reshaped around you.

  1. Balancing granite boulders of the Matobo Hills

    Day 1 · Matobo Hills

Bulawayo and the Road to the Kopjes

Drive · Bulawayo airportMatobo Hills · about 1 hour

Fly into Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city, on a connecting flight from Johannesburg or Harare. Your guide meets you and drives south, through wide streets laid out in the colonial era and out into granite country, where whaleback domes and stacks of balanced boulders rise from the bush. The Matobo Hills were inscribed by UNESCO in 2003 as a cultural landscape, for their rock art and for spiritual traditions that are still alive. Settle into your lodge and watch the evening light turn the granite amber.

  2. Day 2 · Matobo Hills

    On the Trail of Rhino

Set out early with your guide and an armed ZimParks scout into the national park’s Intensive Protection Zone, one of three such rhino strongholds in the country’s parks estate and home to both white and black rhino. Tracking usually takes two to three hours and covers roughly 3–5 km over rocky, uneven ground, reading spoor and dung middens and drawing on the scouts’ knowledge of recent movements. When you find rhino, you approach on foot from downwind and keep a respectful distance. In the afternoon, visit a painted shelter such as Nswatugi Cave, where giraffe and antelope in red ochre have survived for thousands of years.

  3. Day 3 · Matobo Hills

World’s View and the Living Hills

Matobo is sacred country as well as parkland. Shrines of the Mwari religion are still in use, and some may only be approached with local permission, so your guide plans routes with care. Spend the morning on a kopje walk looking for klipspringer, rock hyrax and Verreaux’s eagles, which nest here in one of the highest concentrations anywhere, or join a community or heritage visit arranged with local hosts. At sunset, climb to World’s View, Malindidzimu, a summit sacred to local people that also holds the grave of Cecil Rhodes, a direct reminder of the colonial history these hills carry.

  4. Day 4 · Great Zimbabwe

East to the City of Stone

Drive · Matobo HillsGreat Zimbabwe · about 4–4.5 hours

Leave the hills after breakfast for the drive east, about four hours across the farmland and granite outcrops of the central plateau to the hills near Masvingo. In the afternoon a site guide leads you up the Hill Complex, the oldest part of Great Zimbabwe, climbing narrow stone stairways between boulders to enclosures that were in use from the 11th to the 15th centuries. From the top you look down on the Great Enclosure and the valley, and the scale of the city becomes clear: more than 10,000 people lived here at its 14th-century height.

  5. Day 5 · Gonarezhou

The Great Enclosure, Then the Lowveld

Drive · Great ZimbabweGonarezhou National Park · about 4–5 hours

Return early to walk the Great Enclosure before the day warms up, following its curving walls of fitted granite blocks to the conical tower at its heart. Your guide explains how Chinese porcelain and Persian glass beads found here revealed a trading power linked to the Indian Ocean, and how colonial-era claims that outsiders must have built it were shown to be wrong. Then drive down off the plateau through Chiredzi into the hot lowveld, about 4–5 hours in all, entering Gonarezhou by late afternoon. At the ultra level you turn instead for the private Malilangwe reserve next door.

  6. Day 6 · Gonarezhou

    Chilojo at First Light

Gonarezhou covers about 5,053 km², making it Zimbabwe’s second-largest park, and its signature is the Chilojo Cliffs, sandstone bluffs above the Runde River that glow red and gold at sunrise. Your guide places you on the riverbed or the clifftop for first light, then works the river frontage for elephant, buffalo, nyala and kudu. The park holds more than 11,500 elephants, and its name is usually translated as ‘Place of Elephants’. Years of poaching once made them wary of vehicles; a skilled guide reads their mood, gives them room, and most encounters today are calm.

  7. Day 7–8 · Gonarezhou

Rivers, Baobabs and the Wild Southeast

Two more days let you range further. Follow the Runde downstream toward its meeting with the Save, at about 162 m the lowest point in Zimbabwe, walk sandy riverbeds beneath baobabs with your guide, or sit at a pan through the hot afternoon as elephants come to drink. The park is run by the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust, a partnership between ZimParks and the Frankfurt Zoological Society, and forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park with Kruger and Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park. Lion, black rhino and wild dog live here too, though seeing them is a matter of luck. Ultra-level guests explore Malilangwe’s private tracks instead, with a day visit to Chilojo possible.

  8. Day 9 · Buffalo Range Airport

    Buffalo Range and Beyond

Drive · Gonarezhou National ParkBuffalo Range Airport · about 1–2 hoursA light-aircraft connection then flies on to Johannesburg or Harare.

Take a final early drive or walk, then transfer to Buffalo Range Airport near Chiredzi, an hour or more away depending on your camp. Buffalo Range handles customs and immigration for international charters, so a light aircraft can take you straight to Johannesburg for flights home, or north to Harare. As you climb away, the lowveld flattens into a patchwork of sugar-cane estates and bush, with Gonarezhou’s rivers glinting to the south-east.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

April–May
Just after the rains, the lowveld is green and Gonarezhou’s camps are reopening, some of the remote ones only from April. The Matobo Hills are at their freshest and nights start to cool.
June–August
Cool, dry and clear: the most comfortable months for tracking rhino and exploring Great Zimbabwe on foot. Early mornings on the plateau can be cold, so bring a warm layer.
September–October
Hot and dry in the lowveld, with elephants concentrating on Gonarezhou’s rivers and pans. Plan the Great Zimbabwe visits for early morning and late afternoon.
November–March
Gonarezhou’s remote camps close from late November, and the whole park is closed to visitors from 10 January to 1 March. Matobo and Great Zimbabwe stay open all year and can anchor a shorter green-season trip with Hwange.

Make It Yours

  • Add Hwange and Victoria Falls before Matobo, linking through Bulawayo
  • Stay a second night near Great Zimbabwe for an unhurried visit
  • Join a multi-day walking trail in Gonarezhou with a specialist walking guide
  • Split Gonarezhou between the Save River cliffs and a Runde River bush camp
  • Add a night in Bulawayo at the start to recover from the long-haul flights

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Why is this a road trip rather than a fly-in safari?

Bulawayo has scheduled flights from Johannesburg and Harare, but there are almost no air links between Matobo, Great Zimbabwe and Gonarezhou. Driving also shows you the country in between: the granite plateau, market towns and the long descent into the lowveld. The two longest days, about four hours and four to five hours, are each broken by time at the ruins.

Can this safari be combined with Victoria Falls or Hwange?

Yes. The simplest link is Bulawayo, which is roughly 300 km by road from Hwange’s Main Camp and has flights to Victoria Falls. Starting at the falls, spending three nights in Hwange and then continuing to Matobo and the south creates a journey of about two weeks across the whole country.

Can I take this trip in December or February?

Not in this form. Gonarezhou’s remote camps close from late November, and the whole park is closed to visitors from 10 January to 1 March each year. Matobo and Great Zimbabwe are open year-round, so a green-season version could pair them with Hwange instead.

What does the ultra level change on this route?

At ultra level your four lowveld nights move to a lodge on the Malilangwe reserve, a private conservation area next to Gonarezhou where drives and walks are reserved for lodge guests. You gain exceptional comfort and privacy and trade some of Gonarezhou’s rawness, although a day visit to the Chilojo Cliffs can often be arranged.
