Trip typePrivate safari

This Botswana green season safari is designed for December to April, when summer rains transform the Kalahari and the country’s dry-season logic turns upside down. Instead of following water, you follow grass: zebra and wildebeest spread across the Makgadikgadi Pans and Nxai Pan, springbok and gemsbok gather in the Central Kalahari, and predators follow the young. The trip closes with two nights in the Okavango Delta, green, lush and at its quietest.

Everything here depends on rainfall, and it is worth being clear about that. Good rains can bring thousands of zebra and extraordinary skies; a dry year thins the herds and pushes them elsewhere. Some Delta camps close or change their activities in these months, and the mokoro depends on water levels that are usually low. In return you get newborn animals, migrant birds, vivid light and wilderness shared with very few others. For the full calendar, see the best time to visit Botswana.

Why this route works

The rains decide where the animals go, and this route follows them. The Makgadikgadi comes first because it is closest to Maun and holds the most visible green-season spectacle: the zebra and wildebeest that leave the Boteti River for the grasslands once the storms arrive. From there a light aircraft reaches the Central Kalahari, where Deception Valley’s grasses draw antelope and predators in good years, and three nights allow for the reserve’s great distances. The Delta comes last with two nights, enough for its summer birdlife and a boat outing, and it puts you a short hop from Maun for the flight home. Flying between the three areas avoids long drives on wet, rutted tracks.

Itinerary

Day by Day

A suggested flow — every day can be reshaped around you.

  1. Palm islands silhouetted at dusk on the Makgadikgadi pans

    Day 1 · Makgadikgadi Pans

    Maun to the Makgadikgadi

Drive · MaunMakgadikgadi (Boteti River area) · about 2 hoursOr a short light-aircraft flight, depending on your camp.

You land in Maun, usually on a midday flight from Johannesburg. If you have routed through Addis Ababa or Nairobi, carry a yellow-fever certificate, which Botswana requires after passing through a risk country. Keep to one soft bag of about 20 kg, hand luggage included, for the three bush flights ahead. The Makgadikgadi is about two hours east by road, or a short hop by light aircraft, depending on your camp. Your first drive may follow the Boteti River, where some zebra linger after the dry season, or head onto grassland greened by the first storms.

  2. Day 2 · Makgadikgadi Pans

    Grasslands and Zebra

The Makgadikgadi’s wet-season herds are the reason for this journey’s timing. As the rains fill the pans and green the grasslands, zebra and wildebeest move east from the Boteti, and on a good day they spread to the horizon with foals at heel, lions and hyenas rarely far behind. Your guide reads the weather, because the herds follow fresh grass after local storms and plans need to stay flexible. Where your camp offers it, you may also visit a habituated meerkat colony on foot early in the day, watching the sentries stand up to warm themselves in the sun.

  3. Day 3 · Nxai Pan

    Nxai Pan and Baines’ Baobabs

Today is a full-day excursion north across the Maun–Nata road into Nxai Pan National Park, where fossil pans carpeted in grass can hold zebra, springbok, gemsbok and giraffe after good rains, with lion and cheetah among them. Some of these zebra come from far to the north: a study published in 2014 tracked herds walking from the Chobe River on the Namibian border to Nxai Pan and back, a round trip of about 500 km in a straight line. Whether you also reach Baines’ Baobabs, seven trees painted by Thomas Baines in the 1860s, depends on how muddy the tracks are.

  4. Day 4 · Central Kalahari

    Into the Central Kalahari

Flight · Makgadikgadi airstripCentral Kalahari airstrip · about 1 hour

A light aircraft carries you south-west over an unbroken sweep of bush to an airstrip in or beside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. At about 52,800 km², it is one of the largest protected areas in Africa, set aside in 1961 as a sanctuary for the San. Its recent history is complex: residents were relocated from the reserve from the late 1990s, and Botswana’s courts ruled in 2006 that the evictions were unlawful. Your afternoon drive heads for the old valley country, where the grass turns green within days of a good storm.

  5. Day 5–6 · Central Kalahari

    Deception Valley After the Rains

Deception Valley is a fossil river course that began forming some 16,000 years ago and no longer flows, yet after good summer rains its grassy floor fills with springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest, hartebeest and giraffe. Predators follow: the reserve is known for lion, cheetah and brown hyena, and wild dog pass through, though in such a vast area nothing is assured. You may drive all day without seeing another vehicle. One morning is spent on foot with San guides, who share tracking, edible and medicinal plants and the skills of desert life.

  6. Aerial view over the winding channels and islands of the Okavango Delta

    Day 7 · Okavango Delta

    Green Water Country

Flight · Central Kalahari airstripOkavango Delta camp airstrip · about 1–1.25 hours

Fly north to the Okavango Delta, and the change of scene is total: after the open grasslands, the Delta in summer is humid, lush and loud with frogs and birds. The flood from Angola arrives months later, so water levels are generally low now and your camp combines land and water. Game drives lead the day, with boat outings on permanent channels where they hold enough water. Summer migrants such as woodland kingfishers and broad-billed rollers are back, and young impala and tsessebe stay close to their mothers.

  7. Day 8 · Okavango Delta

    A Delta Day in Summer

Your final full day depends on the water your camp has. On a private concession, expect a morning drive, perhaps a guided walk, and a night drive where the concession permits it. A mokoro outing is possible only where the channels are deep enough, which in a low-water year may mean it is not offered at all; we tell you what your camp expects while planning. Birding is superb, the grass stands tall, and the washed, golden light after an afternoon storm is a gift for photographers.

  8. Day 9 · Maun

    Back to Maun

Flight · Okavango Delta camp airstripMaun · about 20–45 minutes

A last early activity, then the short light-aircraft flight back to Maun. Summer storms occasionally delay bush flights, so your onward connection is planned with a comfortable margin rather than a tight one. Scheduled flights reach Johannesburg in about two hours. If you have time to spare, a doors-off helicopter flight over the Delta from Maun shows the floodplains at their greenest, weather permitting.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

December–January
The rains arrive in earnest, often as afternoon thunderstorms. Herds begin moving onto the grasslands and many antelope give birth. Christmas and New Year often carry festive-season supplements at camps.
February–March
Typically the height of the green-season herds at the pans and in Deception Valley, depending on rainfall. Expect humid heat and storms; some Delta camps close for maintenance in these months.
April
The rains taper and the grass turns tall and golden. Herds begin drifting back toward permanent water, and the Delta’s flood starts to arrive from Angola, though flood levels vary by year.
May–November
Outside this journey’s window: the pans and the Kalahari are dry and sparse. A dry-season route suits these months, or ask about the Boteti’s dry-season zebra and winter activities on the salt pans.

Make It Yours

  • Add a third Delta night at a camp on permanent water for boating
  • Stay two nights inside Nxai Pan instead of visiting on a day trip
  • Begin in Cape Town, where the same months are high summer
  • Book a doors-off helicopter flight over the green Delta
  • Travel in late April for tall golden grass and fewer storms

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Will I see the zebra migration on this safari?

Your chances are good in a year of normal rains, but nothing is certain. The Makgadikgadi herds follow fresh grass, so their position shifts with local storms, and in a dry year they may stay near the Boteti or scatter widely. Your guides share sightings reports daily and adjust drives to find them.

Is the green season a good time for a first Botswana safari?

It can be, if you value birds, newborn animals, dramatic skies and few other vehicles over the easier predator viewing of the dry season. The Delta is quieter and its water activities more limited, and heat and storms shape each day. Travelers who want classic big-game viewing and reliable mokoro trips should choose May to October.

Can we still see Chapman’s Baobab?

No. Chapman’s Baobab, long the best-known tree on the Makgadikgadi, was widely reported to have collapsed in January 2016, although some older guides still describe it as standing. Baines’ Baobabs, a group of seven trees near Nxai Pan, remain and are part of this itinerary when the tracks allow.

How hot is it, and what about malaria in the rains?

Days are hot and humid, and afternoons in the Kalahari can pass 38°C, with cooler evenings after storms. Malaria risk is generally higher during and just after the rains, and every stop on this route lies in a malaria district. Speak to a travel-health clinic about prevention well before you go.

Why is quad biking on the salt pans not included?

Quad biking and sleep-outs on the Makgadikgadi need a dry, firm pan surface, which usually means roughly April or May to November. In the rains the crust softens and these activities are generally suspended, protecting both riders and the fragile surface. Late April sometimes offers both the herds and the pans, depending on the year.
