Photographic Safaris in Botswana

Botswana rewards photographers who plan for it: the right vehicle, the right concession and the right month turn good sightings into the frames you came for.

SeasonAugust to October brings dusty golden light and animals concentrated at water; June to August adds flood reflections and misty, cold dawns; November to March offers storm skies, green backdrops and newborn animals.

A Botswana photography safari is less about a special destination than about set-up. The country offers some of Africa’s richest subjects, from elephants swimming the Chobe to wild dogs in the Linyanti and lechwe racing through Delta shallows, but what you bring home depends on where your vehicle can go, how many people share it and when you travel. Private concessions allow off-road driving to position for light and background, and night drives where permitted; national parks and reserves, including Chobe, Savuti and Moremi, keep you on the tracks and back in camp by dark.

We plan photographic trips around those rules. That usually means a private vehicle in every camp, at least one stay in a private concession such as the Linyanti, Selinda and Kwando reserves, a Chobe boat built for cameras, and a month chosen for the light and subjects you care about most.

How It Works

  1. We start with what you want to photograph, then choose regions, camps and months that give you the best chance of those subjects in good light.

  2. A private vehicle, often fitted with bean bags, camera mounts or swivel seats, means you choose the angle and how long to stay.

  3. In private concessions, your guide can leave the track to position the vehicle for light and background, within each concession’s rules.

  4. On the Chobe, a photographic boat gives you eye-level elephants; at some northern camps, a sunken hide puts you at ground level beside the water.

  5. For aerial images, a doors-off helicopter flight over the Delta adds a different portfolio in 30 to 60 minutes.

Where You Can Do It

Chobe riverfront
Photographic boats with swivel seats and camera mounts put you at water level with drinking and swimming elephants; see Chobe River boat safaris.
Linyanti, Selinda and Kwando
Private reserves where off-road driving and night drives are usually allowed, and where some camps have built sunken hides at the water’s edge.
Okavango Delta and Moremi
Reflections, splashing lechwe and predators crossing channels; concessions allow off-road positioning, while Moremi itself keeps vehicles on tracks.
Savuti
Big predators on open marsh and dead trees along the channel; park rules apply, so timing and patience matter more than positioning.

Good to know

  • Light aircraft allow about 20 kg per person including hand luggage, in soft bags; photographers often reserve an extra seat for gear, subject to availability.
  • A 100–400 mm or similar zoom covers most wildlife; add a wide lens for landscapes and skies, and a second body to avoid lens changes in the dust.
  • Dry-season dust gets everywhere, so carry a blower, microfiber cloths and a cover for your camera between sightings.
  • Camps usually offer charging, but some remote camps run on solar with few sockets, so bring spare batteries and a multi-port USB charger.
  • Off-road driving and night drives depend on the land type; national parks and game reserves allow neither.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time for a photography safari in Botswana?

It depends on the pictures you want. August to October gives golden, dusty light and animals massed at the water, while the green season from about November to March brings storm skies, lush backgrounds, young animals and far fewer vehicles.

Do I need a private vehicle for a photographic safari?

It makes the single biggest difference. On a shared vehicle you compete for angles and time; a private vehicle lets you wait for behavior, position for light and leave when you choose.

Can you drive off-road for photos in Botswana?

In private concessions, off-road driving to position for a sighting is usually permitted within each concession’s rules. Inside national parks and game reserves such as Chobe and Moremi, vehicles must stay on the tracks.

How do I fit camera gear into the light-aircraft baggage limit?

The allowance is about 20 kg per person, hand luggage included, in soft bags. Prioritize one telephoto zoom, one wide lens and two bodies, and ask us about reserving an extra seat if you need to carry more.
