Treks range from about an hour to a full day depending on where the gorilla family is that morning. Park guides assign groups partly by fitness, porters are available and well worth hiring, and travelers of many ages complete treks comfortably.
Permits are limited to a small number of visitors per gorilla family per day, and availability varies by date — popular months are requested well ahead. We arrange permits through trusted local partners and recommend confirming your dates six to twelve months in advance, especially for June to September travel.
Many travelers add a second trek, and few regret it — each family and each hour is different, and a second permit eases the pressure of a single chance. Golden monkey trekking makes a wonderful lighter alternative for one of your mornings.
Rwanda offers the shortest access — Volcanoes National Park is a scenic drive from Kigali — along with a deep bench of luxury lodges, while Uganda's Bwindi treks are often longer and wilder with a broader range of lodge styles. Both deliver the same extraordinary hour.
