Zanzibar travel guide
No nonstop flights from the US, a 20-minute hop from Dar es Salaam and up to 90 minutes on the road at the far end — the practical route to the island.
How to get to Zanzibar comes down to two decisions: which hub you connect through, and how you cover the last stretch from the airport to your coast. Every international flight lands at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), about 5 km south of Stone Town, where Terminal 3 has handled passengers since early 2021.
There are no nonstop flights from the US, so American travelers connect at least once — in the Gulf, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, Europe or Nairobi. Plan the final road transfer as carefully as the flights: the drive to the island’s northern tip takes longer than the hop from Dar es Salaam.

From North America
The quickest routings from the US connect once — through a Gulf hub such as Doha or Dubai, through Istanbul or Addis Ababa, through Amsterdam or Paris, or through Nairobi. Schedules shift from season to season, so compare total journey time rather than the first departure, and favor a connection that lands on the island in daylight.
Daylight matters more than it seems. After a long-haul journey, a mid-afternoon arrival means you see the island on the drive and reach your hotel before dark. If your flight lands late, a first night in Stone Town, 15–20 minutes from the terminal, is kinder than a 90-minute drive north.

From Kenya
Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has several nonstop flights a day to Zanzibar, taking about an hour and 20 minutes. The catch comes when you fly in from the bush: light aircraft from the Masai Mara land at Wilson Airport, a separate domestic airport on the other side of the city, and you cross Nairobi by road to reach JKIA. Traffic there is unpredictable, so we build in a generous buffer — or a night in the city when schedules are tight.

From the mainland
From Dar es Salaam the flight to Zanzibar takes about 20 minutes. Fast ferries also cross the channel several times a day in roughly 1.5–2 hours; foreigners pay fares in US dollars, and passports are checked on the Zanzibar side. The UK government notes several serious ferry accidents between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, and between the islands, so we book flights by default and arrange the ferry, with an established operator, only when you prefer it.
After a northern safari, domestic flights reach Zanzibar from Arusha or Kilimanjaro in about 1–1.5 hours. From the Serengeti, scheduled light aircraft usually stop on the way, often at Arusha, for a total of about 2.5–3.5 hours; the Tanzania safari and Zanzibar guide covers that transfer in detail.
Island hops
Small domestic airlines link the islands with each other and with the mainland parks. Schedules are seasonal, so treat these times as typical rather than fixed.

Flying is quicker — about 20 minutes against roughly 1.5–2 hours — and avoids a busy port. The fast ferries run several times a day and are popular, but the UK government notes a history of serious ferry accidents in these waters, so we arrange flights by default.
Allow about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by private car, a little less to Kendwa. Stone Town is only 15–20 minutes from the airport, and most east-coast beaches are about an hour away.
Usually by flying to Dar es Salaam and connecting to a short flight of about 30–40 minutes to Mafia. Reliable direct services from Zanzibar are rare, so treat it as a travel day.
