Northern Tanzania’s volcanic highlands produce some of East Africa’s most characterful arabica, and a farm visit is a relaxed way to meet the people behind it. On a smallholder farm on the slopes of Mount Meru, a family may walk you through coffee grown beneath banana and shade trees, then roast beans in a pan over an open fire and pound them by hand. On an estate in the Karatu highlands, you follow the process at a larger scale — nursery, pulping, drying tables — before a tasting.
It is an ideal first-day activity after a long flight, when you want something gentle and outdoors, and children enjoy it because they can join in almost every step. We often schedule it on arrival day in Arusha or as an easy afternoon in Karatu around your crater day.

The main harvest in the north usually falls in the second half of the year, when you may be able to pick ripe red cherries. At other times, you still see the plants and every step from drying to brewing.
