You begin on the water in the Okavango Delta, move to a private land concession for big game, and finish on the Makgadikgadi pans, where the horizon is flat, white and completely quiet.

Why this route works

The first days after a wedding call for calm, so the journey opens in a water camp, where the pace is set by a poler and the deck is your living room. Three nights later, rested, you fly a short hop to a private land concession for the early starts and night drives that big-game country rewards. The Makgadikgadi pans close the trip because nothing else in Botswana feels so different: after a week of water and woodland, the salt, the silence and a night under the open sky make a fitting last chapter, and three nights there leave one day with no plans at all. The order also follows the flood, which fills the Okavango Delta from about May and is highest in the dry winter, just when the pans are firm enough to sleep out on.

    Maun, Then Straight onto the Water

    Your connection from Johannesburg reaches Maun in about two hours, and the bush flight leaves from the same small airport once bags are weighed. From a few hundred metres up, the Delta unfolds as a pattern of silver channels and green islands, with elephants and lechwe scattered across the floodplain. Your water camp sits on an island reached only by air. After a drink on the deck, the first outing is a slow motorboat trip into a lagoon as the sun drops, with fish eagles calling from the dead trees along the shore.

  2. Day 2–3 · Okavango Delta

    Two Days on the Delta’s Channels

    Mornings begin in a mokoro, the two of you seated low in the hull while a poler guides it through papyrus and water lilies, close enough to see the tiny reed frogs that sing through the night. Later you might walk an island with your guide, reading the tracks of elephants that wade across between the palms, or take the motorboat further out in search of sitatunga, a shy swamp antelope. Midday is for the plunge pool, a siesta or a book. On one evening the camp sets a private dinner for two on your deck, with lanterns, a small fire and a hippo or two for company.

  3. Day 4 · Northern Delta concessions

    A Short Hop to Big-Game Country

    A flight of well under an hour takes you from the permanent water to drier ground, either a private concession in the northern Delta or, at the ultra level, a camp on Chief’s Island inside Moremi. The land camp feels different at once: open floodplain edged with mopane and leadwood, and a vehicle waiting to go looking for the lions whose calls you may hear after dark. Your first drive runs into the evening, and on a private concession it can continue with a spotlight once the sun has gone.

  4. Day 5–6 · Northern Delta concessions

    Day and Night on a Private Concession

    Private concessions set their own rules, so your guide can leave the track to follow a leopard, head out after dark, or park beside a herd of red lechwe splashing across the flood. With few camps on the land, sightings are rarely shared. An optional walk shows the smaller world of tracks, dung beetles and birdcalls. Where the camp has one, spend a night on a raised star bed with a proper mattress and mosquito net. Chief’s Island, inside Moremi, follows reserve rules instead: drives stay on tracks in daylight, in return for some of the Delta’s densest predator viewing.

    Day 7 · Makgadikgadi Pans

    From Floodplain to Salt Pan

    The flight south-east, usually via Maun, leaves the green Delta behind for the pale scrub of the Kalahari and, finally, the white crust of the Makgadikgadi, the bed of an ancient lake. The camps here are few and far apart. Premium stays look over the Boteti River, where zebra come to drink in the dry months, while the luxury and ultra levels sit on the grassland fringe of Ntwetwe Pan. Your first evening is spent at the edge of the salt with a gin and tonic, watching the light turn pink, then violet, then gone.

  6. Day 8–9 · Makgadikgadi Pans

    Meerkats, Sundowners and a Night on the Pan

    One morning is for the meerkats, a habituated colony that ignores you as it stands guard, grooms and forages. The other can be for a San-guided walk, a gentle ride on the pans if you are confident riders, or nothing at all by the pool. Then, in the dry season, comes the night you will talk about longest: a sleep-out on the pan itself, with bedrolls, a small fire and a sky so full of stars the Milky Way throws light. It gets cold in June and July, so the camp brings extra blankets.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

April–May
Floodwater is moving into the Delta, the grass is still long and green, and many camps charge shoulder-season rates. The pans may still be soft after the rains, so sleep-outs usually begin from around May.
June–August
High water in the Delta, cloudless days and crisp nights. Star beds and pan sleep-outs come with thick bedding, and the best-loved camps fill early, so plan honeymoons in these months well ahead.
September–October
Hot and dry, with game concentrated on the land concession. Water camps on permanent channels keep boating, though seasonal floodplains shrink and flood levels vary by year. Late October on the pans is very hot.
November–March
The rains end pan sleep-outs and many water activities. Couples travelling in these months are better served by the green-season safari.

Botswana has no coastline, so couples who want a beach usually add an Indian Ocean extension through Johannesburg.

Can we go on night drives during this honeymoon?

What is a star-bed night on a Botswana concession like?

A star bed is a raised platform or deck, a short distance from the main camp, made up with a proper mattress, bedding and a mosquito net. Staff take you there, you usually keep a radio to call the camp, and you are collected for breakfast. Not every camp has one, so tell us early if it matters to you.

When can we sleep out on the Makgadikgadi pans?

Only when the pans are dry and firm, typically from around May to October, depending on the rains. June and July nights can drop close to freezing, so camps provide heavy bedrolls and extra blankets. If rain comes early, the camp will offer an alternative night under the stars on land.

How do we add a beach to a Botswana honeymoon?

Fly from Maun to Johannesburg, then on to an Indian Ocean island or coast; some connections allow a same-day onward flight, others need a night near the airport. Four or five nights is a good length after a busy safari. We plan the flights so the transfers stay as short as the schedules allow.
