Trip typePrivate safari

If you have a week, this is the South Africa itinerary that wastes the least of it. Seven days split cleanly into three nights in Cape Town and three in a private Big Five reserve in the Eastern Cape, with one short flight between them from Cape Town to Gqeberha. Nothing on the route calls for antimalarials, and you change hotels only once.

The Eastern Cape reserves are smaller than the Kruger and fenced, stocked through careful reintroductions, and that shapes the experience honestly: lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo are regularly seen, while leopard is scarcer than in the Lowveld. In return you get landscapes the Kruger does not have, with thicket, Karoo scrub and fynbos in a single reserve, and a mild climate for most of the year. The Eastern Cape region page compares the reserves, and malaria-free safaris sets them against Madikwe.

Why this route works

Cape Town comes first because the nonstops from the US land there, and a city start is the kindest way to absorb the time change. The Eastern Cape is the closest Big Five region to Cape Town by air: about an hour and a quarter to Gqeberha and a short drive to the reserve, against roughly two and a half hours of flying to reach the Kruger, where antimalarials are recommended. Three nights in each place is deliberate: in Cape Town it leaves a spare half-day for Table Mountain’s weather, and in the reserve it gives you five or six game drives. Driving to a reserve near Cape Town is possible, but those reserves are small, and safari near Cape Town explains why the flight is usually worth it.

Itinerary

Day by Day

A suggested flow — every day can be reshaped around you.

  1. Table Mountain and the Cape Town coastline seen from above at dusk

    Day 1 · Cape Town

A Gentle First Evening in Cape Town

Drive · Cape Town International AirportYour Cape Town hotel · about 30 minutes

Whether you arrive on a nonstop from the US or through Johannesburg, your driver is waiting at Cape Town International to take you into the city. With only a week, it pays to rest properly tonight rather than push on: check in, walk to an early dinner and let the jet lag settle. If you land in the morning, the V&A Waterfront makes an easy, walkable first afternoon, with the working harbour, food halls and views of the mountain all in one place.

  2. Day 2 · Cape Point

Penguins, Cape Point and Chapman’s Peak

A full private day around the Cape Peninsula is the best single day in Cape Town, and children often rank it as the highlight of the whole trip. Heading south along False Bay, you reach Boulders Beach, where a penguin colony that began with two pairs in 1982 now numbers roughly 3,000 birds, watched from boardwalks. Further on, the lighthouse at Cape Point looks out from the tip of the peninsula; despite popular belief, Africa’s southernmost point is Cape Agulhas, about 150 kilometres away. Return along the Atlantic side over Chapman’s Peak Drive when it is open.

  3. Day 3 · Cape Town

Table Mountain and a Winelands Lunch

Aim for the mountain in the morning, when the wind is often lighter and the queues shorter; the cableway runs only in suitable weather, so your guide watches the forecast and swaps days if needed. From the top, Table Bay and Robben Island are laid out below. Then drive out for lunch among the vines, either in Constantia on the city’s edge or in Stellenbosch, about 45 minutes to an hour away, where some estates welcome families with gardens and lawns. Keep the evening simple: tomorrow you fly to the bush.

A Short Flight to Big Five Country

Flight · Cape TownGqeberha (PLZ) · about 1.25 hoursFollowed by a road transfer of about 1–2 hours to the reserve.

The morning flight east along the coast takes about an hour and a quarter to Gqeberha, where a driver meets you for the road transfer inland. Within an hour or two, farmland gives way to reserve fencing and dense thicket, and you arrive in time for lunch. The afternoon drive is your first taste of safari: a ranger, often with a tracker, reading the landscape for elephant, rhino and lion, then a stop for sundowners as the light goes. No antimalarials, no long connections, and nothing to repack until you leave.

  5. Day 5 · Eastern Cape private reserves

    A Full Day on Safari

Wake-up calls come around first light, and the morning drive is usually the best of the day for predators, which are most active before the heat. Brunch follows, then free time: a swim, a nap or, at some lodges, an hour in a hide overlooking a waterhole. The reserves here combine habitats that rarely meet elsewhere, from thicket and grassland to Karoo scrub and patches of fynbos, so the scenery changes from one valley to the next. Many lodges run junior-ranger activities for children between drives, and the afternoon drive ends after dark.

  6. Day 6 · Addo Elephant National Park

Addo’s Elephants, or a Walk in the Bush

Today you choose. Addo Elephant National Park, the third-largest national park in the country, grew from a sanctuary for a small surviving herd and is now known for large elephant family groups at its waterholes; many reserves in the area can arrange a guided morning there. Alternatively, stay on your reserve for a guided bush walk with an armed ranger, which is typically open to adults and older children only. Either way, the final afternoon drive and a last evening by the fire close out the safari.

  7. Day 7 · Gqeberha Airport (PLZ)

    Back to Gqeberha and Home

Drive · Eastern Cape reserveGqeberha airport (PLZ) · about 1–2 hours

There is usually time for one more early drive before breakfast. Afterwards, your transfer returns you to Gqeberha, where direct domestic flights link to Cape Town and Johannesburg for the long-haul flights home. Flying out through Cape Town suits the nonstop services to the US that leave from there, while Johannesburg offers the most connections; we match the routing to your ticket. If your flight is late in the day, a relaxed lunch near Gqeberha’s beachfront can fill the gap.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

September–November
Spring: mild days in both places, fynbos flowering and the reserves greening up, with whales still in Cape waters.
December–February
High summer in the Cape, dry and often windy, with warm to hot days in the reserves. Mid-December to mid-January is the South African holiday peak, so book early.
March–May
Settled autumn weather in Cape Town and comfortable temperatures on safari, with thinning bush that makes game easier to spot.
June–August
Cape winter brings rain and cold fronts, and early mornings in the reserves can be near freezing. The safari half still works well; the city half is more weather-dependent.

Make It Yours

  • Hold a fourth Cape Town night in reserve for Table Mountain’s moods
  • Stay a fourth night in the reserve for a slower safari
  • Add two nights in Hermanus between June and November for whales
  • Extend along the Garden Route to turn the week into a road trip
  • Book a private game-drive vehicle for your family
  • Add Robben Island on the Table Mountain day

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Can you really see the Big Five in the Eastern Cape?

Yes. Several private reserves here hold lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, reintroduced over recent decades. Lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo are seen regularly, while leopards are present but more secretive than in the Lowveld. No reserve can promise a sighting, but three nights give you five or six drives to try.

Is one week enough for Cape Town and a safari?

It is enough for a satisfying first taste if you keep to two stops, as this route does. Three nights in each gives you a spare half-day for Cape Town’s weather and five or six game drives. With nine or ten days, we would add the Winelands or Hermanus rather than a third safari region.

Is the Eastern Cape a good safari region for children?

It is one of the best: no malaria, short transfers and many lodges with family rooms, children’s programmes or private vehicles. Lodges often set a minimum age for open-vehicle drives, commonly around six, so we match the lodge to your children’s ages.

Why fly to the Eastern Cape instead of driving to a reserve near Cape Town?

The reserves within driving distance of Cape Town are small and fenced, and a day trip spends much of the day on the road. Flying to Gqeberha takes about an hour and a quarter and puts you in larger reserves with more natural game viewing. It adds a flight, but it buys a far better safari.

Do we need antimalarials for this itinerary?

No. CDC lists no malaria risk in the Western Cape or the Eastern Cape, so this route needs no antimalarials. Routine travel vaccines still apply, so check CDC’s South Africa page or a travel clinic before you go.
