Trip typePrivate safari

Many Kruger safari packages settle you into one lodge for the whole stay. This private journey takes a different line: seven nights split between two private reserves on the unfenced western edge of Kruger National Park, picked because they complement each other rather than repeat. The Sabi Sand comes first, for its leopards and its guide-and-tracker teams; Timbavati follows, for open country, fewer lodges and mornings on foot.

Apart from one night near Johannesburg’s airport after the flight from the US, there is no city time, so every day from the second morning starts and ends with a game drive. Both reserves belong to the same open system, where fences with the national park came down in 1993 and animals cross freely. What changes is how you experience it, and seeing both halves in one week is the clearest way to understand why the Greater Kruger is so highly regarded.

Why this route works

The route runs south to north so you never retrace a road. Scheduled flights from Johannesburg reach Skukuza, beside the Sabi Sand, in about an hour, and Hoedspruit’s airport is a short drive from the Timbavati, so you arrive at one airport and leave from another. The Sabi Sand comes first because its relaxed leopards and dense sightings give you a strong start while you are still learning to read the bush. Timbavati then slows the pace, with more space between vehicles and time on foot. Three nights in each is deliberate: two full days per reserve let your guide follow up on fresh tracks instead of chasing a checklist, and the road between the two takes only about two hours. The getting to Kruger page explains the airport choices in more detail.

Itinerary

Day by Day

A suggested flow — every day can be reshaped around you.

  1. Day 1 · Johannesburg (OR Tambo)

An Airport Night Before the Bush

Nonstop flights from the US usually land at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport in the evening, too late to reach the Lowveld the same day, and private reserves do not move guests after dark. You are met after customs and taken the short distance to a quiet garden hotel near the terminals, where the only plan is a light dinner and a long sleep. Use the evening to repack into soft bags: tomorrow’s flight has tighter luggage rules than your long-haul carrier.

    Day 2 · Sabi Sand

    Into Leopard Country

Flight · OR Tambo International AirportSkukuza or a Sabi Sand airstrip · about 1 hourScheduled flights land at Skukuza, a short road transfer from the reserve; light-aircraft shuttles use the reserve’s own airstrips.

A morning flight carries you east over the highveld and down the escarpment into the warm Lowveld, landing at Skukuza Airport inside Kruger National Park or, on a light-aircraft shuttle, at an airstrip within the Sabi Sand itself. Your lodge collects you, and after lunch and a rest you head out on your first afternoon drive. Drives here run past sunset: drinks are poured wherever the light is best, then your tracker sweeps a spotlight through the bush on the way home, picking out genets, owls and the green eyeshine of hyenas.

  3. Day 3–4 · Sabi Sand

    Tracks Along the Sand River

Two full days follow the rhythm of a private reserve: a knock on the door before dawn, coffee and rusks, then out as the bush wakes. Your tracker rides on a seat at the front of the vehicle, reading drag marks and fresh prints on the sandy roads, and when a leopard’s trail leaves the track your guide can follow it off-road. The reserve’s leopards have grown used to vehicles over decades, so sightings are frequent and often relaxed, though never certain. Guides coordinate by radio to limit the number of vehicles at a sighting. Midday is for brunch and a siesta before the afternoon drive.

    Day 5 · Timbavati

    North to Timbavati

Drive · Sabi SandTimbavati · about 2–2.5 hoursA light-aircraft hop between reserve airstrips is an alternative, subject to schedules.

After a last morning drive and brunch, you travel north. By road the transfer takes about 2–2.5 hours through Lowveld farmland and villages below the escarpment; if your two lodges have airstrips, a light aircraft can make the hop in a fraction of that. Timbavati is part of the Associated Private Nature Reserves, a block of roughly 180,000 hectares with no internal fences, and it feels noticeably more open than the Sabi Sand. You arrive in time to settle in before an afternoon drive through knobthorn and marula woodland.

  5. Day 6–7 · Timbavati

    On Foot in Open Country

Timbavati has a strong walking culture, and at least one morning is spent on foot with an armed trails guide, covering a few kilometers at an easy pace. You learn to read middens, spoor and termite mounds, and to approach animals quietly from downwind — the walking safaris page explains the formats. Game drives fill the rest of the time, with lion prides, buffalo and elephant moving in freely from the national park. The reserve is known for rare white lions, carried by a recessive gene, but they appear too seldom to plan around. Where offered, spend a night on a raised star-bed deck.

  6. Day 8 · Hoedspruit Airport

A Last Dawn, Out via Hoedspruit

Flight · HoedspruitJohannesburg or Cape Town · about 1 hour to Johannesburg; about 2.5 hours to Cape TownThe road from your lodge to Hoedspruit’s airport usually takes about an hour.

Take one more dawn drive, often the best of the trip, because by now you know your guide’s instincts and the reserve’s regular residents. After breakfast, the road leads west to Hoedspruit’s small airport. Direct flights connect to Johannesburg for evening departures to the US, or to Cape Town if you are adding a city chapter, and both avoid any return through the Sabi Sand. If your international flight leaves late at night, a day room near OR Tambo can be arranged.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

May–September
Dry winter. Thinning bush and animals drawn to rivers and waterholes make this the easiest time for tracking; dawn drives in an open vehicle are cold, so pack a warm jacket, hat and gloves.
October–November
Heat builds before the rains. Thirsty animals concentrate at water, impala lambs start to appear from around late November, and the bush greens quickly once the first storms break.
April
Autumn. The bush is still dense after the summer rains, so sightings take more work, but the landscape is green, the heat has eased and walking becomes comfortable again.
December–March
Outside this route’s best months: tall grass makes tracking and walking harder and afternoon storms are common, although birding is excellent and newborn animals are everywhere.

Make It Yours

  • Swap Timbavati for Klaserie or another northern reserve with a similar walking focus
  • Add a fourth night in either reserve for a slower pace
  • Fly from Hoedspruit straight to Cape Town and add four nights in the city and Winelands
  • Reserve a private vehicle so you can stay as long as you like at each sighting
  • Add a night near OR Tambo for a Johannesburg heritage day
  • Continue from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls or Botswana’s Okavango Delta

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Do I need malaria tablets for the Sabi Sand and Timbavati?

Both reserves lie in districts where the CDC recommends malaria prophylaxis, and that advice does not change with the season. See a travel-health clinic at least a month before you fly to discuss which medication suits you. If you would rather avoid malaria areas altogether, Madikwe and the Eastern Cape reserves are malaria-free alternatives.

Can children join this safari?

With planning, yes. Many private lodges set a minimum age for shared open-vehicle drives, often around six, and bush walks are usually limited to those aged 12 or over. A private vehicle and a family suite make things easier, though for young children a malaria-free reserve is often the better fit.

Why spend the first night in Johannesburg?

Flights from the US typically land in the evening, after the last connections to the Lowveld have gone, and lodges avoid transferring guests in the dark. A night near the airport lets you recover from the long flight and still reach the bush in time for lunch and an afternoon drive the next day.

Is it worth visiting two reserves in one week?

For most travelers it is. Three nights is enough to settle into each place, and the two feel genuinely different: the Sabi Sand is about close, habituated cats, while Timbavati offers more space and time on foot. The only cost in time is one transfer of about two hours.

How much luggage can I bring?

On the scheduled flight to Skukuza, standard regional allowances apply. Light-aircraft shuttles to reserve airstrips usually limit you to about 20 kg per person, in soft bags, including hand luggage. If you are continuing to Cape Town or elsewhere afterwards, extra luggage can usually be stored in Johannesburg.

How is the cost of this safari worked out?

Your quote depends mainly on season, comfort level, group size and whether you drive or fly between the reserves. The Sabi Sand often sits at a higher price level than the northern reserves, which is one reason pairing them works well. Nightly reserve levies are part of the picture, and we list them separately in your quote.
