South Africa Travel Guide
No visa, but two firm passport rules, a brand-new electronic authorization and one health certificate that matters only if you arrive from elsewhere in Africa.
At the time of writing (September 2026), the South Africa entry requirements for US citizens are refreshingly simple: you don’t need a visa for a tourist stay of up to 90 days, because the United States appears on the Department of Home Affairs list of visa-exempt countries. What you do need is a passport in good order, and that is where most problems begin.
South African immigration expects blank visa pages and a validity margin, and airlines check both at check-in in the US. A traveler with a nearly full passport can be turned away before leaving home, so count your pages the day you book, not the week you fly.
Rules change, and this page is a planning summary rather than immigration advice. Confirm the current position with the official sources listed at the end before you travel.
Pack these in your carry-on rather than checked luggage, and keep a photo of each on your phone.
South Africa wants pages marked for visas, not the amendment or endorsement pages at the back of some older US passports, and the requirement is widely reported as two consecutive blank pages. You are stamped on arrival and departure, and if your trip continues to Victoria Falls, Botswana or Zambia, every border adds more. For a multi-country journey, we suggest you have four or more free pages.
Validity is the second check. South Africa asks for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure, but other countries on your route may ask for more, and airlines tend to apply the strictest rule on your ticket. If your passport expires within a year of travel, renewing it before you book flights spares you a lot of worry.
Passport renewals can take weeks, and faster service costs extra. The State Department’s passport pages show current processing times; build them into your planning well before your departure date.
South Africa officially launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) on 12 August 2026, after a pilot that began in October 2025 for travelers from a small group of countries. It is an online pre-clearance aimed mainly at nationalities that previously needed a visa, and a processing fee applies.
For US citizens the ETA is optional at the time of writing. Visa-exempt access is unchanged, so you can still arrive with just your passport. If you do decide to apply, use only the official Home Affairs portal, never an agency site that charges extra to submit the same form.
Because the system is so new, it may change quickly as it rolls out. Set a reminder to check the official portal about a month before departure; if we become aware of a change that affects your trip, we will tell you.

A summary of the position in September 2026. Confirm with the official sources listed below before you fly.
South Africa relaxed its rules for traveling children in 2019. At the time of writing, a child who holds a passport from a visa-exempt country such as the US needs only that valid passport to enter.
The government’s own guidance still advises carrying an unabridged birth certificate, the full version that names both parents, and, when only one parent is traveling, a consent affidavit from the other parent with a copy of their ID. Airline and immigration staff occasionally ask, so we recommend packing copies even though they are not strictly required for US children.
Grandparents, guardians or family friends traveling with a child should carry consent letters from both parents, with their contact details. For the trip itself, our malaria-free family safari shows how we pace a first safari around children.
Arriving directly from the US, you don’t need a yellow fever certificate, and CDC does not recommend the yellow fever vaccine for travel to South Africa itself.
The rule changes if you arrive from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission: every traveler aged one and over must then show a valid certificate. That matters for multi-country trips. A safari that begins elsewhere in Africa and ends in Cape Town can trigger the requirement, and time spent in transit in a risk country may count too, so share your full routing with us early and check the current country list with a travel clinic.
Journeys that loop out from South Africa to Victoria Falls and back need the same check before flights are booked.
Based on CDC guidance for South Africa at the time of writing. Your clinician decides what is right for you, ideally six to eight weeks before departure.
Measles-mumps-rubella, tetanus and your other routine shots should be current, along with COVID-19 vaccination as advised.
Recommended by CDC for travelers aged one and over, because it spreads through contaminated food and water.
Recommended for travelers under 60 who are not already protected, and worth discussing at any age.
Worth considering for longer, rural or visiting-family trips (typhoid) and where animal contact is likely (rabies pre-exposure doses).
Not a vaccine, but ask about antimalarial tablets if your route includes Kruger, the Sabi Sand, the Greater Kruger or northern KwaZulu-Natal, where CDC recommends them.

Good to know
Not for tourism. At the time of writing, US citizens are visa-exempt for stays of up to 90 days and are admitted on arrival with a valid passport. You still need enough blank pages and validity, which is where most travelers run into trouble.
At the time of writing, no. The ETA launched in August 2026 and is optional for visa-exempt travelers such as US citizens. If you choose to apply, use only the official Home Affairs portal, and check again shortly before you fly in case the rules change.
Your airline may refuse to board you in the US, or immigration may refuse entry on arrival. If you are short of pages, renew your passport before booking flights, since the new number will appear on your tickets.
Not strictly, if the child holds a US passport, as visa-exempt minors need only a valid passport. South Africa’s government still advises carrying an unabridged birth certificate, and a consent affidavit if one parent travels alone, so we recommend packing copies.

Share your dates, who is coming and whether malaria-free matters, and a safari specialist will design a private South Africa route around you. Nothing is booked until you approve it.
