After dark
When the sun drops, a second safari begins. The spotlight sweeps the grass, eyes glow back from the dark, and every sound around the vehicle takes on new meaning.
Much of the bush’s real drama happens after dark. Leopards and hyenas hunt, genets pad along branches, porcupines leave their burrows and bushbabies leap between acacias. A night drive lets you into that world for an hour or two. Your guide drives slowly while a tracker works a spotlight fitted with a red filter, which is gentler on animals’ eyes and less likely to disturb what they are doing.
The key is where you stay. Night drives are generally not permitted inside most Tanzanian national parks, so they are offered in private concessions, wildlife management areas and some areas bordering the parks. If after-dark wildlife is high on your list, we build it in by choosing camps where it is allowed — the wildlife areas bordering Tarangire are among the easiest places in the north to add one.
Night Game Drives

You set out in the late afternoon, often pausing for a drink as the light fades.
Once it is dark, a tracker scans with a red-filtered spotlight while your guide drives slowly.
Sightings tend to be brief; you watch quietly, then move on rather than holding an animal in the beam.
You return to camp for dinner, usually within a couple of hours.

Good to know
Night drives are generally not permitted inside the national park itself. They may be possible in private reserves and concessions along its boundaries, which is one reason to consider a night or two in one of those areas.
You may find genets, bushbabies, porcupines, civets, springhares, hyenas and owls, and sometimes a leopard or lions on the move. An aardvark or pangolin is a rare prize that even long-serving guides celebrate.
Red-filtered light is less disturbing to many nocturnal animals than bright white light, and it avoids dazzling prey in a way that could hand predators an unfair advantage. Good guides also keep the beam off animals’ eyes and limit how long they hold it on a sighting.
Where camps are permitted to run them, night drives are a routine part of the program, led by experienced guides. You stay in the vehicle throughout, and your guide sets the pace and route.
