Rufiji River Boat Safari
From water level, the safari slows down. The engine cuts, the boat drifts, and the riverbank unfolds at eye level: hippos surfacing, crocodiles sliding into the current, elephants coming down to drink.

The Rufiji is one of Tanzania’s great rivers, and in Nyerere National Park it spreads into a maze of channels, sandbanks and lakes that shapes everything around it. A boat safari puts you on that water in a small, shaded boat with your guide and a boat driver. You idle past pods of hippos, watch large Nile crocodiles hauled out on the sandbanks and scan the banks for elephants, buffalo and giraffe coming down to drink.
For birders, it is a highlight of the south: African fish eagles call from dead trees, kingfishers hunt from overhanging branches, and in season carmine bee-eaters nest in the riverbanks. Trips run in the morning or late afternoon, when light and activity are best, and many end with sunset on the water. It is one reason Nyerere pairs so well with Ruaha on a southern wilderness safari.

We choose a camp with river or lake access so the boat trip fits easily into your stay.
You board a small, shaded boat with your guide and driver.
The boat moves slowly along channels and lakes, keeping a safe distance from hippos.
You pause for birds, bank-side wildlife and photographs, sometimes with drinks at sunset.
Back at camp, a game drive or walk fills the other half of the day.

- Bring a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the breeze on the water.
- Many southern camps close in the long rains, roughly March–May, so plan within the main season.

What animals might we see on a Rufiji boat safari?
Hippos and crocodiles are typically plentiful, and elephants, buffalo and giraffe often come to the water’s edge. Birdlife is exceptional, from fish eagles and kingfishers to storks, herons and skimmers.
Is a boat safari safe with hippos and crocodiles around?
Guides know the river well and give hippos, the main concern on the water, a wide berth. You stay seated in a stable boat and follow your guide’s instructions.
Morning or afternoon — which is better?
Both work well. Mornings are cooler with busy birdlife, while afternoons bring golden light and the chance of a sunset on the water, so many travelers do one of each.
Can we do a boat safari elsewhere in Tanzania?
