After dark
As the sun sinks behind the escarpment, a spotlight clicks on and the night shift begins: leopards stretching, hyenas on patrol, genets in the branches.
A South Luangwa night drive is one of the defining experiences of a Zambian safari. In many African national parks, vehicles must be back in camp by dusk. In South Luangwa, licensed operators’ vehicles may stay out after dark, typically until about 20:00, while self-drive visitors must be out of the park by 18:00. Most camps fold it into the afternoon activity: sundowners as the light fades, then a slow return by spotlight.
The park’s reputation for leopard owes a lot to these drives, because the cats become active as the heat leaves the day. Nothing is certain after dark, but riverine woodland and a skilled spotter give you a real chance. Night drives in South Luangwa
You leave camp in the late afternoon on a regular game drive with your guide and, at dusk, pause somewhere open for a sundowner.
As darkness falls, a spotter takes up position with a handheld spotlight and sweeps it slowly across the bush, looking for the glint of eyes.
When something is found, your guide positions the vehicle, and the spotter keeps the beam on the animal’s body rather than its eyes; many guides use a red filter for sensitive species.
If a predator begins to hunt, good guides take the light off the prey so they don’t hand the hunter an unfair advantage.
You’re back in camp in time for dinner, within the park’s time limit for operator vehicles.

Good to know
Operator vehicles are usually back in camp by around 20:00, the limit for licensed night drives, which leaves time for dinner. Self-drive visitors must leave the park earlier, by 18:00. Times can change with park rules, so your camp will confirm them.
Leopard are the headline, and hyena, genet, civet, porcupine, honey badger, bushbabies and owls are often found. Lions hunting after dark are possible, and an aardvark or pangolin is a rare prize. Some nights are busy and some are quiet, which is part of the experience.
Done well, yes. Responsible guides keep the beam off animals’ eyes, avoid lighting prey during a hunt, keep sightings short and never chase. If a guide’s practice makes you uncomfortable, say so; good camps welcome the feedback.
Use your fastest lens, raise the ISO and let the spotlight be your light source instead of flash. Brace the camera on a beanbag or the vehicle frame and ask your guide to keep the engine off while you shoot. On your first night, it’s often worth simply watching.
