Trip typePrivate safari

This Zambia November safari is built on timing. Each year from around late October, an estimated eight to ten million straw-coloured fruit bats gather in a small patch of swamp forest in Kasanka National Park, with numbers peaking around mid-November. At the same time, far to the west, the first rains draw the wildebeest herds of the Liuwa Plain onto the open grassland, a migration African Parks describes as the second largest in Africa.

Seeing both in one trip takes careful planning: the parks lie at opposite ends of the country, and each has very few beds. The route uses light aircraft to connect them, allows two evenings and a dawn at the bat roost and three nights on the plains, and ends with two nights at Livingstone, where the Zambian side of the falls is at its lowest and Livingstone Island is usually open for Devil’s Pool. It suits travelers who have already done a classic safari and want something different.

Why this route works

The bats set the dates. Their numbers peak around mid-November, so the trip is built around two nights at Kasanka at that point, with Liuwa and Livingstone following on. A night in Lusaka on arrival absorbs any delay to your international flight before the small-aircraft legs, which are hard to reschedule. Kasanka and Liuwa are more than 800 km apart, so the only realistic link is by light aircraft, routed via Lusaka or through Kalabo or the Matamanene airstrip depending on the season’s flights. Three nights on the plains give you time to follow herds that move with the rain. The falls come last because Livingstone’s airport lets you fly home without returning to Lusaka.

Itinerary

Day by Day

A suggested flow — every day can be reshaped around you.

  1. Day 1 · Lusaka

    A Night in Lusaka

Drive · Kenneth Kaunda International AirportYour Lusaka hotel or farm lodge · about 30–60 minutes, depending on traffic

You arrive in Lusaka and are driven to a farm lodge on the edge of the city or a boutique hotel in the quieter suburbs, depending on your comfort level. After the long flight, the afternoon is for a swim, a wander through the garden or a nap, then an early dinner and a briefing on the week ahead. Starting here gives you a buffer, so a late international arrival does not put the first light-aircraft flight at risk.

  2. Day 2 · Kasanka

    The Evening Sky over Kasanka

Flight · LusakaKasanka airstrip · about 1.5 hoursThe alternative is most of a day by road on the Great North Road.

A light aircraft takes you north-east to the Kasanka airstrip. After lunch and a rest, your guide takes you to a hide on the edge of the mushitu swamp forest as the sun goes down. At dusk the bats begin to leave the roost, first a few and then a dark stream that fills the sky as millions head out to feed on wild fruit, until it is too dark to see. Bring a hat: you are sitting beneath an enormous number of bats.

  3. Day 3 · Kasanka

Dawn Return and the Sitatunga Hide

An early start takes you back to the forest before sunrise to watch the bats return, pouring down into the trees and settling in heavy, noisy clusters that bend the branches. After breakfast you climb the Fibwe hide, a platform about 18 m up a mululu tree above the Kapabi swamp, where sitatunga, the shy swamp antelope, feed among the reeds in the early morning and late afternoon. Kasanka is also rich in birds, and puku graze the grassy edges of the wetlands. In the evening you return to the roost for a second emergence, often from a different viewpoint.

    Day 4 · Liuwa Plain

Across Zambia to the Liuwa Plain

Flight · KasankaLiuwa Plain · most of the day, including a connectionRouting depends on the season’s scheduled flights and charters.

This is the longest travel day, flying west across almost the whole country, usually via Lusaka or with a stop at Kalabo or the Matamanene airstrip, depending on the routes available that season. The view changes from miombo woodland to the Zambezi floodplain and then to Liuwa’s grasslands, with shallow pans and scattered islands of trees. You land in the afternoon and head to camp, with a fair chance of passing your first wildebeest on the way.

  5. Day 5–6 · Liuwa Plain

    Wildebeest, Hyena and Big Skies

Two full days on the plains. In November the wildebeest herds, often joined by zebra and tsessebe, spread across the new grass, though exactly where depends on the rains. Liuwa’s spotted hyenas live in large clans and are the park’s most numerous large predator, and your guide will also look for cheetah, wild dog and lion, whose numbers have recovered since the years when a single lioness, known as Lady Liuwa, was the only one left. The park is run by African Parks with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and the Barotse Royal Establishment. Afternoon storms bring dramatic light, and drives continue after dark, when the hyenas are most active.

    Day 7 · Livingstone

    South-East to the Falls

Flight · Liuwa PlainLivingstone · about 1.5–2 hours, depending on routing

After a final morning drive, you fly south-east to Livingstone, either directly or with a connection, and are driven to a lodge on the upper Zambezi. After the open plains, the river’s palms, islands and hippos feel lush and green. The afternoon is for rest, since by now you have crossed most of Zambia from east to west, with a sunset boat trip if you want to go out on the water.

    • Final morning drive
    • Flight to Livingstone
    • Optional sunset cruise
    Overnight
    Livingstone
    Meals
    Breakfast & dinner
  7. Day 8 · Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya)

    The Falls in Low Water

In November the Zambian side of the falls is at its lowest, and parts of the Eastern Cataract can be almost dry. That leaves the basalt face and the gorge unusually visible from the Knife-edge Bridge and the rainforest path, and it is the month when Livingstone Island is usually open for Devil’s Pool, where swimmers aged 12 and over can go in with the operator’s guides, conditions permitting. For the view from the other bank, a separate visit with its own entry, see our page on Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

    • Guided tour of the falls at low water
    • Optional Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool
    • Afternoon at leisure or a rhino walk

    Livingstone
    Meals
    Breakfast & dinner
  8. Day 9 · Livingstone

    Departure

Drive · Upper Zambezi lodgeLivingstone airport (LVI) · under an hour

Breakfast by the river, then the drive to Livingstone’s international airport for a flight to Johannesburg or Lusaka and on home. November marks the start of the rains, so allow time between connections in case storms delay a flight. If you are leaving later in the day, a last walk along the riverbank is a good way to spend the morning.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

Late October–early November
The bats are arriving and numbers are building; the Liuwa herds may still be gathering, depending on when the rains begin. Heat can be intense before the first storms break.
Mid- to late November
The sweet spot for this route: bat numbers usually peak around mid-November and the wildebeest are generally out on the plains. Afternoon storms are common and can delay flights.
December
The bats begin to leave and Kasanka’s seasonal camp closes around the start of the month, while the rains make the Liuwa Plain harder to cross. We do not plan this route after November.

Make It Yours

  • Add a fourth night on the Liuwa Plain to follow the herds
  • Add South Luangwa after Kasanka for river camps and night drives near Mfuwe
  • Replace Livingstone with a final night in Lusaka if you prefer to fly out from there
  • See the falls from Zimbabwe too with a KAZA UNIVISA
  • Ask us to match you with a guide who specializes in photography

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Why does this safari run only in November?

Both spectacles are seasonal. The fruit bats are at Kasanka from around late October to December, with the largest numbers in mid-November, and the Liuwa wildebeest move onto the open plains with the first rains. November is the only month when both are dependable enough to plan around, although rainfall still varies from year to year.

What is the difference between the premium and luxury levels on this trip?

Kasanka and Liuwa have very few places to stay, so the difference is smaller than on other routes. At Kasanka the luxury level uses a seasonal camp set up for the bat weeks rather than a lodge, because the park has no luxury-category lodge; it is comfortable but simple. At Liuwa, luxury means a remote villa-style lodge while premium uses a park guesthouse, and in Lusaka and Livingstone the luxury choices are smaller and more polished.

Are the bats dangerous?

No. Straw-coloured fruit bats eat fruit and pay no attention to people, and you watch them from hides and viewing points with a guide. Wear a hat and long sleeves and never touch a bat found on the ground. Ask your travel clinic about rabies vaccination before any trip to rural Africa.

How big is the Liuwa migration compared with the Serengeti?

It is far smaller. African Parks counts more than 40,000 wildebeest at Liuwa, against more than a million in the Serengeti ecosystem. The appeal is different: you may have the herds, and the hyenas following them, almost to yourself.

Do the November rains affect the trip?

November is the start of the wet season, so expect some afternoon thunderstorms. Rain rarely lasts all day, but it can delay light-aircraft flights, so we build in slack and recommend flexible international tickets. Tracks at Liuwa can turn muddy, which is one reason the route flies rather than drives.
