A Zanzibar honeymoon works best when you let the island play three roles. Stone Town gives you the romance of an old Indian Ocean port — carved doors, the call to prayer at dusk, dinner on a rooftop above the harbor. A villa on the coast gives you privacy. And a reef island at the end delivers the turquoise water the photographs promised. Few beach destinations offer that range within an hour or so by road.

Where to stay
Each suits a different kind of couple, and many honeymoons combine two or three of them.
Your own pool, garden and often a cook, on the tidal south-east or north-east coast. The lagoon comes and goes with the tide, so the pool becomes your swimming spot and low water your private beach walk.

Timing
Wedding dates rarely bend to the weather, so here is how each part of the year feels for couples. Our month-by-month guide has the full detail.

Pacing
Every move costs a morning, so match the number of settings to the length of your stay.
One night in Stone Town, then four or five on a single beach. Choose the north for easy swimming and sunsets, or a pool villa on the east coast for privacy.
Two nights in Stone Town, three in a south-east pool villa and three on the north-east coast or Mnemba. That is the rhythm of our 9-day Zanzibar honeymoon, and it gives each setting time to sink in.
Swap the final leg for a lagoon lodge on Pemba, or add Mafia in whale-shark season, for an ending few couples share.
If the island follows a week of early game drives, keep it simple: one beach, perhaps a Stone Town night, and nothing to wake up for.
Etiquette
Zanzibar is warm and welcoming, and also conservative. Away from the beach and your hotel, both of you should cover shoulders and knees, especially in Stone Town and the villages, and keep affection private. The UK government warns that public displays of affection can lead to arrest, so treat discretion as the rule until you are back inside your hotel.
Same-sex couples should know the legal position before booking: same-sex relations are illegal in Zanzibar, as on the Tanzanian mainland. Some couples still travel, choosing private villas and keeping a low profile in public; we plan those trips with care, in confidence, and are straightforward about the risks. Safari first
Most couples who combine the two put the safari first and the island last: dawn game drives, then days with no alarm at all. Yes, particularly for couples who want more than a beach. A UNESCO-listed old town, private villas and reef islands all lie within easy reach of each other, and the island pairs naturally with a safari. It suits couples who are comfortable dressing modestly in town and keeping affection private.
Six to eight nights is the sweet spot for an island-only honeymoon: enough for a night or two in Stone Town and two different beach settings. After a safari, four or five nights on one coast is usually plenty.
The south-east and north-east coasts, where most private pool villas stand, are the quietest, and Mnemba is the most exclusive of all. The trade-off is the tide, which empties the lagoon twice a day, so a villa pool matters. For privacy with easy sea swimming, look for a secluded resort on the north-west coast.
For couples who want the most secluded setting in the archipelago, yes: only guests may land, and the reef begins a few steps from your room. Two or three nights at the end of the trip suits most couples. A pool villa on the north-east coast opposite the island reaches the same reef by boat.
