Day 1 · Arusha

A Soft Landing in Arusha

Your driver meets you in arrivals at Kilimanjaro International Airport, and the road to Arusha takes about an hour, past maize fields and roadside fruit stalls, with Mount Meru’s cone filling the windscreen on a clear evening. Your lodge sits in quiet, green grounds on the edge of town, among coffee rows or garden depending on your tier. Tonight asks nothing of you beyond a shower, an early dinner and a long sleep. In the morning your guide walks you through the days ahead and how easily they can bend around the two of you.

Day 2 · Tarangire

Into Tarangire’s Baobab Country

Drive · Arusha → Tarangire National Park · about 2–2.5 hours

After a slow breakfast you drive out of Arusha and down into the Rift Valley, reaching Tarangire in time for lunch at camp. Afternoons here belong to the river. In the dry months, elephant families often come down to the Tarangire River to dig for water in the sand, and the ancient baobabs throw long shadows across the grass. Your guide can keep the vehicle still for as long as you like. As the light softens, you stop on a rise for sundowners, a cold drink in hand while the plains turn copper below.

Day 4 · Ngorongoro Crater

Up to the Cool Ngorongoro Highlands

The road climbs out of the Rift Valley through Mto wa Mbu, where banana groves and rice paddies line the verge, then up the escarpment into cooler, greener country. By early afternoon you reach your lodge, either on a working farm near Karatu or on the crater rim itself, depending on your tier. Nights up here are sharp, so expect a log fire and a hot-water bottle tucked into the bed. A gentle walk through coffee rows or along a forest edge is the right way to stretch your legs before an early night.

Day 6–7 · Central Serengeti

Serengeti Days on Your Own Clock

The Central Serengeti holds resident game in every season, so these days never depend on where the migration happens to be. Leopards often rest along the branches of sausage trees by the Seronera River, lions use the granite kopjes as lookouts, and cheetahs hunt the open grass in the cool of the morning. Take one day early and one day slow. If you add the optional balloon flight, you drift above the plains for about an hour at sunrise, then land for breakfast in the grass. One evening, your camp sets a private dinner in the bush.

Day 8 · Zanzibar

From the Plains to the Indian Ocean

Flight · Seronera airstrip → Zanzibar · about 2.5–3.5 hours, usually with a stop — Light-aircraft luggage is typically limited to about 15 kg per person in soft bags.

A last short drive, often the one when something unexpected happens, and then you are at the Seronera airstrip for the flight east. The light aircraft usually touches down once on the way, and the view shifts from tawny plains to the green of the highlands and finally the pale turquoise of the Zanzibar channel. A driver meets you on arrival for the transfer to the coast, roughly an hour depending on where you stay. Shoes off, a swim before dinner, and the safari starts settling into memory.
