This Kenya honeymoon itinerary strings together three places that feel private by design: a conservancy on the Laikipia plateau, a Maasai-owned Mara conservancy on the edge of the national reserve, and the quieter southern end of Diani Beach. Each is reached by a short scheduled flight, and every stay after Nairobi runs three or four nights, so the trip unfolds in chapters rather than check-ins. Walks with a guide are part of the plan in both safari areas, because Kenya feels closest on foot.

What makes it a honeymoon is space rather than rose petals: few vehicles at a sighting, meals wherever you want them, a guide who reads the mood. Why this route works

Starting high and cool in Laikipia lets jet lag fade in gentle weather before the warmer Mara and the humid coast. Laikipia’s rhinos, walks and riding are also a counterpoint to the Mara’s big cats, so the two safari stays never repeat each other. Scheduled light aircraft link all three areas: about an hour from Wilson to Laikipia, a connecting hop southwest to the Mara, then either a seasonal direct flight or a change at Wilson to reach Ukunda on the coast. No leg involves a long road transfer, and the beach comes last, when you are ready to rest after a week of early starts.

    A Quiet First Night in Karen

    Arriving couples are met at JKIA and driven to Karen, where your first night is spent in quiet gardens a world away from the airport traffic you have just crossed. The house is chosen for calm and good food rather than a long list of facilities. Land early and the plan is a slow lunch on the veranda and a nap; land late and you go straight to bed. Before you sleep, repack for tomorrow’s small aircraft, which take about 15 kg each in soft bags, and leave the rest in storage at Wilson Airport, where you land again on the final day.

    Day 2 · Laikipia

    Up to the Laikipia Plateau

    A morning flight from Wilson crosses the farms and forests of the central highlands, with Mount Kenya’s jagged summit off the wing on a clear day, and lands on a dirt strip about an hour later. Laikipia sits on the equator yet feels fresh, at roughly 1,700–2,000 metres, and its conservancies manage wildlife alongside cattle on land where rhinos have been brought back from the brink. Which conservancy we choose depends on your tier, the activities you want and current local conditions, which our partners on the ground check before we confirm. Your first evening ends with a drink on a ridge as the plateau turns gold.

  3. Day 3–4 · Laikipia

    Rhinos, Walks and a Night Under the Stars

    Laikipia is where you step out of the vehicle. Walk with an armed ranger across open grassland toward zebra and giraffe, or ride where your camp keeps horses, even as a beginner. If your stay is on or near Ol Pejeta, you can visit Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on Earth, both female, as well as the conservancy’s large black rhino population. Many camps can set up a star bed for one night: a raised open-air platform with a proper mattress and mosquito net, a short drive from camp. Night drives, where allowed, look for aardvark and striped hyena.

    Day 5 · Mara Conservancies

    Southwest Across the Rift to the Mara

    Flight · Laikipia airstrip → Mara conservancy airstrip · about 1.5–2.5 hours, often with stops — Some routings connect through Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

    The scheduled flight southwest crosses the Rift Valley and often touches down at one or two other strips before the Mara, so treat the journey as a sightseeing flight. You land in a conservancy that Maasai families lease to a small number of camps, bordering the national reserve. Here the number of vehicles allowed at a sighting is capped at a handful, so a lioness and her cubs are yours to watch rather than a crowd’s. The drive from the airstrip doubles as your first game drive, and after lunch and a rest you head out into long, golden grass.

  5. Day 6–7 · Mara Conservancies

    Unhurried Days in a Private Conservancy

    Conservancy rules let your guide leave the track, so mornings can be spent quietly beside a resting pride or a cheetah scanning the plains from a termite mound. After one early drive, breakfast is laid out in the grass under an acacia. A walk with Maasai guides reveals the small things, from dung beetles and medicinal plants to the tracks of the night before. For the optional balloon flight, you are collected before dawn, drift over the plains for about an hour and land to a champagne breakfast. From July, the migration herds often spread into these conservancies as well.

    From Savanna to Sea

    Flight · Mara conservancy airstrip → Ukunda airstrip (Diani) · about 1.5–3 hours — Direct in some seasons; otherwise via Wilson with a short connection.

    A last early drive, then the flight to the coast. In some seasons a direct service links the Mara with Ukunda in roughly an hour and a half to two hours; otherwise you change planes at Wilson and the trip takes around three hours. You step out into warm, salty air, and the drive to the southern end of Diani is short. By late afternoon you have swapped boots for bare feet, and the evening is a walk along the tideline as the light fades behind the palms, with a little Mara dust still on your hat.

  7. Day 9–11 · Diani Beach

    Diani for Two

    The southern stretch of Diani is quieter, with palms leaning over white sand and a coral reef breaking the swell offshore. Snorkel the reef from a local boat when the tide is right, or sail out on a traditional dhow at dusk with something cold to drink. Couples’ massages, long seafood lunches and afternoons in the shade fill the rest. When the monsoon winds blow steadily, roughly December to March and again from about June to September, Diani is one of East Africa’s kitesurfing spots, if one of you wants a lesson. Or simply do nothing at all.

  8. Day 12 · Diani Beach

    Back Through Nairobi

    Flight · Ukunda airstrip (Diani) → Nairobi Wilson Airport · about 1.5 hours — Then a road transfer to JKIA for your international flight.

    Take a late breakfast and a final swim, then fly back to Nairobi from Ukunda and collect any bags you left in storage at Wilson. A driver takes you across the city to JKIA, with a generous margin built in because Nairobi traffic is unpredictable and international check-in closes early. Many long-haul flights to the US and Europe leave in the evening or late at night; if yours does, a day room near the airport or in Karen gives you somewhere to shower and rest before the journey home.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

July–October
Dry, clear safari weather, and the migration herds often spill into the Mara conservancies from July. The coast is breezy with the southeast trade winds. August books up first.
December–February
Hot on the coast, with calm, clear water and the best snorkelling, while January and February are usually dry in the bush too. A lovely window after a winter wedding.
March–May and November
The rainy seasons. Several conservancy camps close around April and May, and some smaller coast hotels stay shut into June, so we usually steer honeymooners toward other months.

Frequently asked questions

How many flights does this honeymoon involve?

Four scheduled light-aircraft flights: Nairobi to Laikipia, Laikipia to the Mara, the Mara to the coast and Diani back to Nairobi. Each lasts between about an hour and three hours, sometimes with a stop at another airstrip. Soft bags of around 15 kg each are the rule on the bush sectors, and the coast flights usually allow a little more.

What is a star bed, and is it safe?

A star bed is an open-air sleeping platform, often raised or built on a rock, with a real mattress, bedding and a mosquito net, set a short way from the main camp. Camps that offer them keep staff on watch and within call through the night. Availability depends on the camp and the weather, so we treat it as a request rather than a promise.

Will we see the wildebeest migration on this honeymoon?

Between roughly July and October the herds are often in the Mara, and they frequently spread into the northern conservancies. Most river crossings happen inside the reserve, so we can swap a conservancy day for a day at the river if the timing looks right. Nobody can predict exactly where the herds will be on a given day.

Why include Laikipia instead of more time in the Mara?

Laikipia adds what the Mara lacks: rhinos, cool highland air, riding and the chance to sleep out. Three nights in each also means the two safari halves feel different, rather than one long stay in the same kind of country. Couples who have already seen the Mara often find Laikipia the highlight.

Do camps add honeymoon extras?

Many camps mark a honeymoon with small touches, but these are set by each property and vary, so we never promise them. What we can plan are the moments that matter to you, such as a private dinner, a bush breakfast, a sleep-out or a sunset dhow, all confirmed in writing before you travel.
