In the air
Watch the Namib change color beneath you as the sun comes up: charcoal first, then apricot, then the deep rust that made these dunes famous.
A Sossusvlei hot-air balloon flight shows you the Namib at a scale the ground never can. From the basket, the dunes resolve into long parallel ridges marching toward the horizon, the gravel plains run east to the foot of the escarpment, and a lone oryx leaves a thread-thin trail across the sand. For the first half hour the low sun rakes across everything, so the crests glow and the troughs stay in shadow; by the time you land, the light has flattened and the heat is building.
It helps to know what the flight is and isn’t. Balloons launch from the Sesriem area and drift with the wind over the desert’s edge and the private reserves that border the park. They do not float over Deadvlei, whose clay pan lies deep inside the dune sea more than 60 km from the gate, so keep your Sossusvlei and Deadvlei morning for another day and treat the balloon as the view that ties the landscape together. Seats are limited and paid for separately, and for July–October travel we reserve them as soon as your desert lodge is confirmed.
Hot-Air Balloon Flight over the Namib
We reserve your seats when we confirm your desert lodge, ideally for your first full morning so that a second morning stays free if the flight is postponed.
A vehicle collects you in the dark; how early depends on the distance from your lodge to that morning’s launch site.
The crew lays out and inflates the envelope as the sky pales, and the pilot briefs you on where to stand in the basket and how to brace for landing.
You fly for about an hour, the pilot changing altitude to catch different layers of wind while a ground crew follows across the plains.
After landing, the crew packs the balloon away and breakfast is set out nearby before you are driven back to your lodge, usually by mid-morning.

Expect about an hour in the air, though the wind can shorten or stretch it. With the pre-dawn pickup, inflation, landing and breakfast, the outing fills most of the morning.
The pilot cancels if wind or weather makes flying unsafe. That is why we schedule the flight early in your desert stay, leaving a spare morning to try again; refund terms differ between operators, and we confirm them when booking.
They do different jobs. A balloon is slow, quiet and intimate over a small area, while a light-aircraft flight covers the whole sand sea and the Atlantic coast in an hour or two. If you can choose only one and the coast isn’t on your route, the scenic flight shows you more of the Namib.
