After early mornings and long drives, a few days of warm Indian Ocean water, spice-scented lanes and slow dhow sunsets let the safari sink in.
Zanzibar is a short flight from the safari circuit — about 1.5 hours from Arusha, or roughly 2.5–3.5 hours from the Serengeti, usually with a stop — and a different world when you land. The north, around Nungwi and Kendwa, has deeper water that is swimmable at most tides. The east, from Matemwe to Paje, has wide tidal flats, reef-sheltered lagoons and steady kitesurfing breezes. Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rewards a night of wandering past carved doors, markets and rooftops.
Offshore, Mnemba’s atoll is known for some of the island’s best snorkeling. Most travelers spend 3–5 nights, often a night in Stone Town followed by a longer beach stay. Three to five nights suits most travelers: enough to unwind after early starts without the beach feeling like a second trip. If you want Stone Town too, add a night or two there first.

Very. Calm lagoons, reef snorkeling and plenty of space make it a natural end to a family safari. Beaches on the north coast, where deeper water keeps swimming possible through more of the tide, are often easiest with younger children.

In the air
Drift over the Serengeti at first light as the plains wake beneath you, then land for a champagne breakfast in the bush.
After dark
Head out after dark with a red-filtered spotlight to find the bush’s nocturnal cast — genets, bushbabies, hunting predators and, with luck, an aardvark.
On foot
