Your gateway to the northern parks
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit. It sits on open plains roughly between Moshi and Arusha, and on a clear day you may glimpse Kilimanjaro from the aircraft. The airport is modest in size and easy to navigate, which is exactly what you want after a long journey.
Most safari travelers spend their first night in or around Arusha, about an hour’s drive away, and set off on safari the next morning. Here’s what to expect from landing to lodge.

Leave the aircraft
Depending on where you park, you may walk across the apron to the terminal. Keep your passport, printed eVisa grant notice and, if your route needs one, a yellow fever certificate in your hand luggage.
Health check, where applicable

Immigration

Baggage and customs
Collect your bags and pass through customs. Tanzania has banned single-use plastic carrier bags, so leave them at home. Clear zip-top bags for toiletries have generally been tolerated at the time of writing.
Meet your driver
Beyond customs, your driver or guide waits with a name board. The transfer is arranged in advance, and your notes say who will meet you. Politely decline offers from anyone else.
Drive to Arusha
The drive takes about an hour on a paved highway, a little more in evening traffic. There’s usually water on board, and all you need to do is sit back.

Money, SIM cards and staying connected
The Tanzanian shilling is the local currency, but US dollars are widely used in the safari world, and many travelers arrive with small, recent US notes for tips and incidentals. There have typically been ATMs and a currency-exchange counter at the airport, but don’t rely on them after a late-night arrival. Arusha has banks and ATMs if you need shillings, and many lodges accept cards, sometimes with a surcharge.
For mobile data, the simplest option is often an eSIM bought before you travel. Local SIM cards are available in Arusha and, at times, from kiosks at the airport. Registration requires your passport and may include fingerprints. Coverage is good in towns and patchy in the parks, and many camps offer Wi-Fi of varying speed, which is a good excuse to put your phone down.
Carry-on essentials
Bags occasionally miss a connection on long, multi-leg journeys. Pack your carry-on so a delayed suitcase is an inconvenience rather than a problem.

Where to stay on arrival night

Arusha offers two broad styles: town hotels, which are practical and close to shops and restaurants, and lodges on coffee estates and garden grounds on the outskirts, often on the lower slopes of Mount Meru, which feel calmer and more like the start of a safari. Several coffee-country lodges sit on the airport side of town, which shortens the transfer after a long flight.

Flying home from Kilimanjaro
Many international departures from Kilimanjaro leave in the evening, which gives you a full final day. A common pattern is a last morning game drive or a light-aircraft flight back from the Serengeti, then a day room at an Arusha lodge to shower and repack before your transfer to the airport.
