In Namibia, the calendar is rarely the constraint. The map is.
How many days in Namibia is enough? For a first trip that takes in the desert, the coast and Etosha, 10 to 14 days is the comfortable range. Seven or eight days works if you choose two regions or fly between them, and 18 days or more lets you add the Zambezi Region, Botswana or Victoria Falls. The range is wider than in most safari countries for one reason: distance.
Namibia covers about 825,000 km², nearly twice the size of California, and has only around three million people. Its highlights sit hundreds of kilometers apart, much of the road network is gravel, and a day spent driving from one region to the next leaves only an hour or two for sightseeing at either end. Every planning decision flows from that: which regions to choose, how many nights to give each, and which legs to fly.

Distances: Namibia Wildlife Resorts. Windhoek to Swakopmund, not an NWR figure, is roughly 360 km and about four hours on tar. Travel times are estimates, not schedules.
Light aircraft turn many of those road days into short hops. The times below are approximate; weather, fuel stops and routing all change them.

Some hops are scheduled seat-in-plane services and others are private charters. Light aircraft usually limit luggage to soft bags of around 20 kg including hand luggage, so check your journey’s allowance.
Arrival and departure days count. A 10-day trip usually means eight full days on the ground, so every region you add has to earn its travel day.
Choose one pairing and give it room: the desert and the coast by road, or Damaraland and Kaokoland by light aircraft, as on our 8-day north-west journey. Adding Etosha to a week by road turns it into a driving holiday.

Explore →Two nights at Sossusvlei is the minimum that works, because the dunes are at their best at sunrise, and a single night means arriving tired in the afternoon and leaving the next morning. Three nights make room for NamibRand’s dark skies or a balloon flight. Swakopmund needs one or two nights; two allow a proper outing such as Sandwich Harbour as well as a quiet evening in town.
Damaraland rewards two or three nights: one for rhino tracking, another for desert elephants or the Twyfelfontein engravings. Etosha works best over three nights, ideally split between two sides of the pan so you aren’t driving the same roads twice. If you have to cut, drop a region rather than shaving every stop to a single night, because a string of one-night stays is mostly packing, driving and checking in.
There are no nonstop flights between the US and Namibia. Most travelers connect once, typically through Johannesburg or Cape Town, or via Frankfurt, Zurich (seasonal) or Addis Ababa, landing at Hosea Kutako International Airport about 45 km east of Windhoek. Plan on losing most of a day in each direction, more if a connection is tight. Namibia keeps UTC+2 all year, which puts it six or seven hours ahead of US Eastern time depending on the season.
Because long-haul connections often land later in the day, we usually plan a first night near Windhoek so you can recover before a long drive or an early flight. On the way out you don’t need to backtrack: Walvis Bay airport, near Swakopmund, has flights to Cape Town and Johannesburg, which makes an open-jaw route easy, and combination trips can finish in Maun, Kasane, Victoria Falls or Livingstone instead.

A week is enough for two regions, such as the desert and the coast, or for the remote north-west if you fly. It isn’t enough to see Sossusvlei, the coast and Etosha by road without spending most of the week driving; for those three, plan 10 days or fly between them.

Yes, but they are about 756 km apart by road, so most itineraries break the journey with nights at the coast and in Damaraland. If time is short, a light-aircraft hop turns more than a day of driving into roughly two hours in the air.
Expect a full day of travel with one connection, as there are no nonstop flights. Common routings pass through Johannesburg, Cape Town, Frankfurt or Addis Ababa, and total times vary widely with the connection, so plan a quiet first night near Windhoek.
Two nights is the usual addition, giving you one full day at the falls plus time for a sunset cruise or a helicopter flight. Windhoek has direct flights to Victoria Falls and to Livingstone, so the falls work well as the first or last stop of a Namibia trip.
