Between roughly July and October, the Great Migration reaches the northern Serengeti, where the Mara River cuts across the herds’ path. The crossings that follow are among the most dramatic sights in nature and among the least predictable: herds may gather on a bank for hours and then turn away, or cross twice in a morning. This journey gives you three nights near the river so that time works in your favour.

The route builds towards that finale. Two nights in Tarangire, a night in the Ngorongoro highlands and a crater descent, then two nights in the Central Serengeti before you continue north by road or light aircraft. The early parks deliver elephants, rhino country and big cats, so the river days can be given entirely to the river.

Why this route works

Reaching the north on day seven means you arrive at the river rested and already fluent in reading animal behavior. The central-to-north leg is the key decision: by road it takes about four to five hours, a long game drive through the hills around Lobo; by light aircraft it is around an hour, which buys an extra afternoon at the river. Either way, you leave by air from Kogatende to Arusha, so you never drive the length of the Serengeti twice.

    Your driver meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport for the hour-long drive to Arusha. On a clear afternoon, Kilimanjaro’s snow-streaked summit may appear to the east while Mount Meru rises ahead. At your lodge the evening is yours. Before you set out, your guide or the local team shares the latest word on the herds’ position, because in the northern Serengeti even a week can change which crossing points are active. An early night is wise: the safari begins in the morning, and the pace builds from here.

    South to Tarangire

    July to October is Tarangire’s finest season. As the surrounding plains dry out, animals move towards the permanent Tarangire River, and the park can hold remarkable concentrations of elephant alongside buffalo, zebra and wildebeest. You arrive for lunch and head out in the afternoon, when family herds file down to dig in the riverbed. Tarangire is also a good place to tune your eye before the Serengeti: look for fringe-eared oryx on open ground and lesser kudu in the thicker bush, both species you are unlikely to meet further north.

  3. Day 3 · Tarangire

    Swamps and Riverbends of Tarangire

    With a full day, your guide can take you south towards the Silale swamp, where elephants wade in to feed and lions sometimes rest on the dry margins, or stay along the river’s bends as the day warms. Photographers appreciate the dust and low sun of the dry months, and Tarangire’s baobabs make striking frames. At the luxury and ultra levels, the camp’s private concession often allows a morning walk with an armed ranger. The evening is quiet: a fire, dinner, and the sound of elephants moving past in the dark.

    Day 4 · Ngorongoro Crater

    Up the Rift Valley Wall to Ngorongoro

    A final Tarangire drive, then the road north and up the Rift Valley wall to the Ngorongoro highlands. The change is immediate: cool air, red soil, wheat and coffee fields, and dense forest on the higher slopes. Depending on your tier, you stay on a farm near Karatu or on the crater rim itself. An afternoon village walk, a stroll through the farm or simply a rest prepares you for tomorrow, the one day on this trip when being first down the road really pays.

  5. Day 5 · Ngorongoro Crater

    Crater Floor, Then West to the Serengeti

    In the crater, the best moments often come early: a lion pride on a buffalo kill, spotted hyenas circling, a black rhino if luck and your guide’s patience combine. The floor is only about 260 square kilometres, yet it supports an extraordinary density of animals, from golden jackals to grey crowned cranes. After lunch you drive back up and head west, past the Olduvai area and onto the Serengeti’s short-grass plains. By late afternoon you reach Seronera and the camp that is home for the next two nights.

    Day 6 · Central Serengeti

    Predators of the Seronera Valley

    The Central Serengeti rarely disappoints, even in the dry season when the migration is far to the north. Resident lions and cheetahs are frequently seen, and the acacia and sausage trees along the Seronera River are among Tanzania’s best places to look for leopards. It is also a good day for the optional balloon flight, drifting low over the valley at sunrise. By evening your guide will be checking the latest reports from the north, deciding whether to aim for the crossing points near Kogatende or further west in the Lamai wedge.

    Day 7 · Northern Serengeti

    North to the Mara River

    Drive · Central Serengeti → Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) · about 4–5 hours with game viewing — Or about 1 hour by light aircraft, adding an afternoon by the river.

    If you drive, the journey north is a game drive in itself: rolling hills around Lobo, woodland where elephants browse and, increasingly, the scattered vanguard of the herds. If you fly, you land at Kogatende in about an hour and can be at the river by the afternoon. Either way, the northern Serengeti feels different: greener, hillier and quieter, with the Mara winding through it in deep, muddy bends. Your camp, a seasonal mobile camp or a permanent tented camp depending on tier, puts several known crossing points within reach.

  8. Day 8–9 · Northern Serengeti

    Waiting on the Mara River

    These are river days. Your guide reads the herds, and when they mass on a high bank with dust hanging in the air, you settle in at a respectful distance, engine off, leaving their approach to the water open. Blocking the herds’ path or crowding the landing side can turn them back, so good guides hold back and wait. A crossing may come in minutes, in hours, or not at all today. In between, a bush breakfast on the bank, crocodiles hauled out on sandbars and hippos grumbling below make the waiting part of the experience.

  9. Day 10 · Northern Serengeti

    Flight South from Kogatende

    Depending on your flight time, you may have one more morning at the river before the short drive to Kogatende airstrip. The scheduled light aircraft usually stops at one or two other Serengeti airstrips before reaching Arusha, a scenic flight south over the country you crossed by road. From Arusha you connect to Kilimanjaro International Airport for evening international flights, or continue to Zanzibar for a beach finish. If your onward flight leaves late, a day room in Arusha gives you time to shower and repack after a dusty week.

Herds typically arrive in the north through July, depending on the rains. Once they reach the river, crossings can come quickly, and numbers build through the month.
August – September
Usually the peak. Herds move back and forth across the Mara, sometimes crossing several times, and northern camps are at their busiest, so book well ahead.
October
Herds begin drifting south as the short rains approach. Crossings still happen, often with fewer vehicles, and the first green flush returns to the plains.

Frequently asked questions

Can you promise we will see a river crossing?

No one honestly can. Crossings depend on rainfall, the herds’ mood and even predators waiting on the far bank, and herds sometimes gather for hours without crossing. Three full days near the river, peak-season timing and a guide who knows the crossing points give you the best realistic chance.

Should we drive or fly from the Central Serengeti to the north?

Driving takes about four to five hours and works as a long game drive, often with early herds along the way. Flying takes about an hour and adds an afternoon at the river, which matters if crossings are your priority. Many travelers fly this leg and drive everything else.

How do guides behave at a crossing?

The best guides keep well back, switch engines off and never park where the herds want to enter or leave the water. Vehicles crowding the banks can turn a crossing back, so patience is part of the etiquette. At busy points, rangers may also direct where vehicles wait.

Which month is best for Mara River crossings?

August and September are usually the most active, with July and October also productive depending on the year’s rainfall. Herds can arrive early after a dry season or linger if the short rains come late. We check recent movements before confirming which camp and area to use.

What kind of camp will we stay in near the river?
