Four airports, a network of light-aircraft shuttles and a five-hour highway: how to reach Kruger and the private reserves without losing a day of your safari.
Getting from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park takes about an hour by air or five to six hours by road, depending on which part of the Greater Kruger you are heading for. For most private safaris we fly: a scheduled flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town to an airport on the edge of the bush, then a short road transfer or a light-aircraft hop to your lodge’s airstrip.
The right choice depends on three things: which reserve you are staying in, whether you start from Johannesburg or Cape Town, and what time your international flight lands. Settle those and the rest of the logistics fall into place.

Many nonstop flights from the US reach Johannesburg in the evening, after the last connections to the bush have left. Rather than land and drive five hours through the dark, we book a quiet night near OR Tambo and fly on the next morning, reaching your lodge in time for lunch and the afternoon drive.
Driving after a long overnight flight is tiring even in daylight, and at night the potholes, wandering livestock and crime risk all rise. The airport night also gives a buffer if your flight is late, and it can become far more than a transit stop with a Johannesburg and Soweto heritage day.
Landing in Cape Town instead? You can skip Johannesburg entirely: direct flights link Cape Town with Skukuza, Kruger Mpumalanga and Hoedspruit in about two and a half hours.
Scheduled flights from Johannesburg to Skukuza, Kruger Mpumalanga and Hoedspruit take about an hour on regional jets and turboprops. Skukuza is a special case. It is the only commercial airport inside the park, and it allows only ten landings and ten take-offs a day, all between about 09:00 and 15:00. That protects a sensitive wilderness from aircraft noise, but it also means seats are limited and fill early in the busy months.
Many private reserves also have their own airstrips, served by scheduled light-aircraft shuttles from Johannesburg and Kruger Mpumalanga. These small planes hop between strips, so a flight of about an hour can include a stop or two, but you step down almost at your lodge’s door.
By road, Johannesburg to the southern Kruger gates is about 450–500 km, roughly five to six hours on the N4 toll highway plus stops, and Hoedspruit and the northern private reserves are about 5.5–6 hours away. The drive crosses the Highveld grasslands before dropping off the escarpment into the Lowveld.

Leaving the bush, flights from Skukuza, Hoedspruit and Kruger Mpumalanga connect back to Johannesburg and Cape Town. For Victoria Falls, the direct flight leaves from Kruger Mpumalanga rather than Skukuza and takes about 1.5 hours. Plan the last morning around your flight. A dawn drive, brunch and a midday departure is the usual rhythm, which is why afternoon and evening connections from Johannesburg work best for the long flight home.

For private reserves and shorter trips, flying saves most of a day and arrives fresh. Driving makes sense when you want the scenery, ideally broken with a night near the Panorama Route, and it should always be planned to arrive before dark.
