When to Go
In Zambia the calendar decides more than the weather: it decides which camps are standing. Here is what each month brings, region by region.
The best time to visit Zambia for most safaris is June to October. Choose August to October for the densest game as the rivers shrink, and July for walking in cool, dry weather. November belongs to two specialist spectacles, the Kasanka fruit bats and the Liuwa wildebeest, and Bangweulu’s shoebills are easiest from late May to August. The emerald months, roughly December to April, suit birders and travelers who value solitude and lower rates, and who accept that many camps are closed.
That last point is what sets Zambia apart from most safari countries. Many of its best camps are seasonal: built of canvas, reed and thatch, opened for the dry months and packed away before the rains turn the tracks to mud. Some are rebuilt from scratch every year. Planning here starts with a simple question, then: is the camp you want actually open on your dates? This guide answers it for every region, then walks through the year month by month.

Each row scores a region or experience month by month, from limited to excellent. Read the walking row as the season of the Luangwa’s bush camps, and the falls row as the experience of standing on the Zambian side, which is not the same thing as the volume of water. Every year’s rains move the edges of these windows by a few weeks.

General guidance only. Remote bush camps, the Busanga Plains, North Luangwa and most Lower Zambezi camps close in the rains; a few lodges near Mfuwe and in central Kafue stay open all year. The Zambian side of the falls runs low from about October to December, which is when Devil's Pool (usually late August to December) is open. Exact dates change with each year's rains.

Dry Season
The rains usually fade in April and have gone by May, when Zambia is still green, the grass is long and camps are reopening week by week. June brings clear, dry days. July is the coolest month and the best of the year for walking: crisp mornings, pleasant middays and nights that can be genuinely cold on an open vehicle. In Kafue, which sits at about 1,100 m, winter nights can drop to around freezing.
From August the bush thins and the waterholes shrink, so animals gather along the Luangwa, the Zambezi and the Kafue. August to October is peak season in South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi, with the strongest game viewing and the highest camp rates. September adds warm, balmy evenings. October is the hottest month of the year, and the low-lying valleys feel it most.
If your dates fall in October, plan with the heat rather than against it: earlier starts, a long siesta and a camp with shade and a plunge pool. Or tilt the trip toward Kafue, where altitude takes the edge off the afternoons, or toward the Lower Zambezi, where time on the river breaks up the hottest hours.
Emerald Season
The first storms usually arrive in November, and the rains set in through December. January is typically the wettest month, March brings the last of the rains, and by April most camps are reopening. Daytime highs stay above 30 °C (86 °F) through much of the wet season, and the valleys turn the deep, vivid green that gives the season its name.
What closes: nearly all of the Lower Zambezi, the Busanga Plains, North Luangwa and the Luangwa’s remote bush camps. Walking becomes largely impractical once the grass is high and the tracks flood. What stays open: several lodges around Mfuwe in South Luangwa, a few camps in central Kafue, and Livingstone and the falls all year.
What you gain: boat trips on the swollen Luangwa, migrant birds, dramatic skies and the lowest rates of the year at the camps that stay open. Wild dogs are often particularly active around March. It is a season for returning safari-goers, birders and photographers who value atmosphere over sheer numbers, rather than for a first safari built around walking.
Spectacles
Several of Zambia’s most memorable events keep their own timetables, and two of them fall outside the classic dry season.
Some 8–10 million straw-colored fruit bats gather in a small patch of swamp forest in Kasanka National Park, with numbers peaking around mid-November. You watch the dusk departure and the dawn return from raised hides, and the colony has usually dispersed by late December.

Popular Months
Zambia in July is cool, dry and close to ideal for a first safari. The bush camps and North Luangwa are open, walking conditions are at their best, and Victoria Falls still carries enough water to impress from the Zambian side without disappearing into spray. Pack a warm layer for early drives. The 11-day North and South Luangwa walking journey is built around exactly these weeks.
Zambia in October is hot, dry and intense. Game crowds around the last water, the light turns hazy and golden, and the walking camps run their final weeks before closing. The trade-offs are heat, especially in the Luangwa and Zambezi valleys, and a falls that looks thin from the Zambian side by the end of the month.
Zambia in November is a month of change. Remote camps close as the storms build, but this is when Kasanka’s bats peak, the wildebeest return to Liuwa Plain and Devil’s Pool is usually open at the falls. The 9-day Kasanka bats and Liuwa wildebeest journey links all three.
Zambia in December is green, wet and quiet. The bats are thinning out and most bush and river camps have closed, but lodges near Mfuwe and in Livingstone stay open, so a festive-season trip is possible. Choose it for atmosphere and value rather than for walking or peak game.

October is the hottest month, and the Luangwa and Zambezi valleys feel it most, but it is also when game concentrates most tightly around water. Many travelers manage well with early starts, a long midday rest and a camp with a plunge pool. If heat is a real concern, June and July, or higher-altitude Kafue, are the better choice.
Not in any meaningful way. Once the grass is tall and the tracks flood, walking becomes impractical and the Luangwa’s bush camps close. The walking season usually runs from about June to October, with the odd camp opening in late May or staying into early November.
Several lodges near Mfuwe in South Luangwa run all year, as do a few camps in central Kafue, and Livingstone is open throughout. The Lower Zambezi, the Busanga Plains, North Luangwa and the remote Luangwa bush camps largely close from about November or December until April or later.
June and July usually balance the two best: the bush camps are open, walking weather is cool and the Zambian side of the falls still carries plenty of water. From September the parks peak while the Zambian side thins, and by November parts of it can run almost dry.
It is excellent for a particular kind of trip. November brings Kasanka’s bat migration, the wildebeest on Liuwa Plain and low water at the falls, when Devil’s Pool is usually open. It suits a classic walking safari less well, because the storms arrive and most Luangwa bush camps have closed.
