This is the shortest route we plan that still reaches the Serengeti, designed for travelers who have a week rather than a fortnight. In six days you cross three very different ecosystems — the baobab woodland of Tarangire, the volcanic caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater and the open grassland of the central Serengeti — with a private guide who sets the pace around you.

The journey runs east to west by road, so every transfer doubles as a game drive, and it ends with a light-aircraft flight from Seronera instead of a full day’s drive back to Arusha. It suits couples, friends and older children who are happy with a few early starts. If this is your first safari in Tanzania, it is an honest introduction with no wasted days.

Why this route works

With six days there is no room for backtracking, so the route runs in a single line from Arusha to the Serengeti and then flies home. Tarangire comes first because it is close to Arusha and eases you in with big, relaxed elephant herds. A night in the highlands puts you near the crater gate for an early descent, before the midmorning traffic builds. From the rim, the road drops onto the southern plains, turning the transfer into a long game drive. Two nights at Seronera then give you one full day in the Serengeti’s most dependable predator country.

    Arrival in the Shadow of Mount Meru

    Your guide meets you as you clear arrivals at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives you west toward Arusha, a little over an hour through maize fields and roadside markets. On a clear evening, Kilimanjaro’s summit may show above the clouds behind you. Your first night is spent on the green lower slopes around Arusha, where the air is cooler than you might expect and the gardens are busy with sunbirds. There is nothing to do but unpack, enjoy a quiet dinner and hear from your guide how the days ahead will run.

    Elephants Among the Baobabs

    After breakfast you drive south-west for about two hours, the country flattening and the first baobabs appearing one by one. Tarangire is shaped by its river, which draws elephants, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest in from the surrounding plains as the land dries out each year. Your guide works the river valley slowly: family herds digging for water in the sandy bed, dwarf mongooses on termite mounds, lilac-breasted rollers flashing blue. Lunch is at camp or a picnic under the trees, and the late-afternoon drive often brings the best light of the day.

    Day 3 · Ngorongoro Crater

    Take one more early drive while the park is at its most active, then head west toward the Great Rift Valley. The road passes through Mto wa Mbu, a busy market town known for its small red bananas, then climbs the escarpment above Lake Manyara, with wide views over the lake. At the top, the land turns to coffee and wheat around Karatu. You reach the Ngorongoro highlands around midday, with the afternoon free to rest, walk the grounds or add a Maasai cultural visit. Evenings up here are cool, so expect a fire.

  4. Day 4 · Ngorongoro Crater

    First Light in the Crater, Last Light on the Plains

    Drive · Ngorongoro Crater rim → Central Serengeti (Seronera) · about 3–4 hours with game viewing

    Leave before sunrise with breakfast packed, and you can be among the first vehicles down the crater wall once the gate opens. The caldera floor, roughly 260 square kilometers, supports buffalo, zebra, spotted hyena and lion, and is one of the few places in Tanzania where black rhino are seen with some regularity, though never with certainty. Flamingos may be feeding on Lake Magadi. After a morning below, you climb out and drive west through Maasai grazing land, enter the Serengeti at Naabi Hill and reach Seronera by late afternoon.

    A Full Day in Big-Cat Country

    This is the one day without a transfer, and your guide shapes it around what is moving. The Seronera River valley is known for leopards resting in sausage trees and yellow-barked acacias, while lion prides use the granite kopjes as lookouts and cheetahs hunt the open grass to the south. You can stay out from dawn to dusk with a packed lunch, or return to camp through the midday heat. If you add a balloon flight, you lift off before sunrise, drift for about an hour and land for breakfast on the plains.

  6. Day 6 · Central Serengeti

    One More Drive, Then Wheels Up

    Flight · Seronera airstrip → Arusha · about 1–1.5 hours — The onward road transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport takes about 1 hour.

    Go out early for a last game drive, when the light is soft and lions are often still active from the night. Your guide then drops you at Seronera airstrip for a scheduled light-aircraft flight to Arusha of about an hour or a little more, with the plains and highlands unrolling below. Luggage on these flights is typically limited to about 15 kg per person in soft bags. In Arusha you are met and driven to Kilimanjaro International Airport for an evening flight home, or to a hotel if you are staying on.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

June–October
Dry season. Tarangire is at its best as elephants gather along the river, vegetation thins and wildlife is easier to find everywhere; expect more vehicles at the crater and Seronera.
December–March
Green season, with a warmer, drier spell in January–February. The migration herds are usually on the southern plains, and the drive to Seronera may pass them, depending on rainfall.
November
The short rains usually arrive as brief afternoon showers. The land greens quickly, visitor numbers are lower and the herds start moving south, though timing varies from year to year.

Frequently asked questions

Is six days too rushed for a Tanzania safari?

It is brisk but not frantic. The longest drive, from the crater to Seronera, takes about 3–4 hours with game viewing along the way, and the flight home replaces a full day’s return by road. If you can add a day, the most valuable place to spend it is a third night in the Serengeti.

When is the best time to take this safari?

June to October brings the easiest game viewing and Tarangire’s biggest elephant gatherings. December to March is greener and quieter, and the migration herds are usually on the southern plains you cross on day 4. We generally avoid April and May, when the long rains slow the tracks and some camps close.

What is the difference between the comfort, premium and luxury levels?

Every level includes the same private vehicle and guide, en-suite rooms or tents and good food. Premium moves you into smaller, more characterful stays, such as a tented camp in Tarangire’s river valley and a working farm lodge near Karatu. Luxury adds a lodge on the crater rim itself, a private concession in Tarangire and more space and service throughout.

Yes, for most. Children who enjoy being outdoors usually cope well with the drive times, though some camps and the balloon set minimum ages. Older travelers appreciate the flight out, and your guide can shorten game drives or build in rest whenever you like.
