The first hours of daylight are the best of the safari day. A breakfast in the bush lets you stay out through all of them and turns the meal into a highlight.
Leaving camp before sunrise gives you the cool hours, when predators are often still active and the light is at its softest. The trade-off used to be a hurried boxed breakfast on your lap. A bush breakfast removes it: after two or three hours of game viewing, you round a bend to find a table set under a shade tree, a cook at the griddle, fresh fruit, warm pastries and properly brewed coffee.
Where park rules allow, camps create full set-ups, and private concessions give them the most freedom. On the Ngorongoro Crater floor, you breakfast or picnic at designated sites instead, one of them beside a hippo pool. Either way, the result is more time in the field at the best hour and a meal you remember for its view. We suggest it on days when an early start pays off most, such as a crater descent.
